I put on your shoes
When I was five
And my toes didn’t quite
Make it past the tongue

I tried to keep your stride
When I was twenty
But your pace
Was always too
Brisk for me
To keep up

I tried to wear your faith
Like a shirt that didn’t fit

I wore your name like a bow-tie

Parted my hair the way you showed me
When I was eight

Sat in your favorite chair
When you weren’t looking

Drove your car high into the air
Slammed it into a soybean field
And never told you about it

Took the lid off your pepper shaker
On April Fools Day

Stopped scribbling fancy art
And drew those straight
Straight engineering lines
With your best number 2 drafting pencil

And maybe
It was the day
When I woke up
And realized I wasn’t you
And didn’t have to be

Maybe it was that day
When I first grieved

It was hard to watch you
Not be you anymore
Hard to see superman
Fall before kryptonite
Like a rag

I’ve missed you my friend
My father
My hero
My idol

I’ll miss you more
But, I’ve had you a long time

It's funny how alot of us, when we're young, look at our fathers like a Superman.....And, in many ways they were....and when ya find out they're really "Clark Kent"...and only human....and they're gone.....it makes ya think about all those "Super" things they could do....and how Super they were to you and your growth........This is wonderful Hawk......

Thanks hootie (or should that be hottie? lol) deer and sea...

I very much appreciate your thoughts and comments...

Just to put this all in context for those of you who don't know me my father has been bravely fighting cancer since the fall of 98 but, alas, sometimes there are better alternatives than a cure... he was/is a proud member of America's greatest generation and I never wrote him a poem in all the years I walked in his shadow..

Rebel-
Admiring greatly the tenderness
in this tribute from your heart.

A victory won
within the son
Son to father,
so well done.

Rebel, you mayn't have written him a poem until now, but from these words, one can see that your love for your father is as poetry. Thank you for sharing this part of you. I smiled all through the reading (o:

Hawkman - I like to think I can put words together and make a poem, and thereby claim to be a poet.  You show that there is a lot more to it than that.  This is a terrific piece of writing, old man.

Obviously I haven't been around much (hence the date of this posting and the lateness of my reply). I like your style so I decided to run a search for more of your work. The title of this particular one grabbed my heart so naturally I had to read it. You recently replied to a posting I did in CA titled *My Greatest Love* so you know we have alot in common on this subject. That poem being written for my father as well.

It's a hard thing to have loved in such a way and then to have it taken from you. Very unlike a love for someone else, or so in my opinion. You know what I mean.

Thanks for posting this. It has a lot of emotion. Wonderful job!

This is beautiful beyond words although I cannot relate since I had the complete opposite relationship with my father.  But, nonetheless, this is powerful, very touching. Luckily, I had a mother who sounded like your father was with you...that's what gives me strength.

I'm glad that Ron left this link in my poem...indeed this is a perfect metaphor ion any level.
And I am sure that your father has read this from heaven, sounds cliche I know, but it is a comforting thought isn't it?
