The smallest hands I ever held in my own
And the unconditional love I have known
Coming from you my sweet
As I hold you on your unsteady feet
Guiding you by the hands I hold
Warming you against the slightest cold
Learning to take your very first steps
Walking away from arms in which you’re kept
And I see before my very eyes
All the things that will make you cry
I see you trying to tie your shoe

And refusing my help with a hesitant No
Letting go of my hand for you might be seen
Getting mad at me and calling me mean
My anxiety as you leave for the first date
And my bittersweet pride as you graduate
Helping you to move out on your own
Warning of the dangers of the unknown
Worrying with so much clarity
Because you are apart from me
I see you falling in love for the last time
As you finally decide upon Mr. Right
I see all of these things and most clear is,

To everyone who replied on my poem Little Hand Prints...thank you so much, you honor and humble me. I've been reading all of your work in here, and haven't had any time to reply to individual ones, but I feel unworthy of being in here sometimes. I hope you like this one for my daughter also.

How poignant and heartfelt! Such a protective, nurturing message...and so true to life! (sigh) Excellently presented, JML.

This is so precious, JML! A walk through the life of a child! Visions that all we parents share!

This is a beautiful tribute. I hope when she is grown you will share this wonderful gift with her. A treasure for sure. What a lucky girl to have someone who has loved her and show it to her from the very beginning of life.
