This is a true story.

"The Fork in the Road"
(A Soldier’s Lament)

Look to the Left,
Look to the Right.
Go ahead, HE said [in a whisper],
Take the one on the Right.

Two choices given,
Only one is safe.
Yet, we venture forward
To uncertain fate.

Choices made, I keep my stead
While my brothers now are dead.

Still, I torment inside my head,
When I think about those poor souls
Who went Left instead.

My lament is fraught with gilt and fright.
Why were they wrong,
And I, right?

A wonderful poem, asking some tough questions that we may never understand....

Life is full of choices that we each must face, mostly uncertain of the outcome.
Your poem expresses this well and how we have to live (or not) from those choices.
Nicely written.

A thought provoking poem u gene.  I've thought about things we have control over and things we cannot control.  We can make choices but we usually cannot control the outcome or the consequences of our choices.  And of course where more than one is involved the choices will vary based on individual personalities, morals, feelings, desires, and so on.    James

I think that we shall never know the reasons why...
"..'tis just for us do do and die"...
Nice job, my friend
