O.K. I know it's simple, but this one describes how I feel right now.

I don't understand what's happening to me, but all of a sudden I have this urge to write poetry--which I've never done in my life.  I don't know where it's coming from, but things keep popping into my head. Last night, I wrote four poems. All I know is, I like it, but I hope it's not just a passing phase--I'm really afraid of "burn-out."

"A New Poem"

It often comes to me at night,
When lights are dim
And thoughts are bright.

As I ponder what to write,
Take pen in hand And with it make
My words appear as no mistake.

Guided by a force unknown,
I create a new And wondrous poem.

Thanks for listening,
~Gene

I know the feeling well, Gene.  I get inspiration for poetry often at night and have to write my thoughts down right away, otherwise they get lost in my sleep!

"To you, my children, These lovely flowers I give.
Prune ye my vines and fig trees,
With care my flowerets tend,
But keep the pathway open,
Your home is at the end."

That's the way it happened to me, too, Gene!
All of a sudden, out of nowhere, and the passing phase has been going on for 18 months now! I'll just enjoy it as long as it lasts, and if it stops, I can still come here to read all the other poems that other people write! Isn't it fun?! I love it!
I enjoyed this poem of yours too!

I know what you mean!  Whenever I finish a poem there's a part of me that thinks--
"Wow!  Where'd that come from?"
Great poem!

Thanks for the feedback.

Last night I had a burst of inspiration. I literally wrote four poems at the same time--jumping back and forth from one to the other, hoping that I could get it all down before I forgot them. I think one may have gotten lost somewhere in all that. However, today I'm a total blank. So I was just getting worried that maybe I had a savant-like episode or something.

I had given myself the goal of coming up with a poem a day.

A poem a day keeps the demons away.
It's a lofty goal
Don't know if I have it in my soul.

One of those that I wrote last night really upset me a bit, so maybe that's why I was feeling kinda strange today. I'll post it shortly.

Thanks,
Gene

Yes, Gene, THIS is how it begins!  Pretty soon you will find the passion of poetry to be ALL CONSUMING!!!!! Muhahahaha!

And...And...Instead of burn-out,you will have writing spurts just like you are now,  followed by dry spells, frustrating days of writing dribble or not being able to conjure up a single sincere word!

And you'll need to start submitting these poems, here, there and everywhere!  To online magazines, printed magazines, poetry contests, waiting, just waiting for that feedback we all need so badly!

Then the day finally arrives when you receive an email - Congradulations!  We are using your poem in our next issue!  Where do we send the five bucks?

LOL

But, it is a very gratifying hobby, albeit one that many nonpoets do NOT understand!

Good luck, and keep posting!

Corinne

Gene, I was there too!  I had a girlfriend send me a poem she wrote. Never before had I written one, and I ended up re-writing it. Then I ended up writing one of my own, and been doing it ever since. They do seem to come at night when the mind and body is relaxed. Though they don't come so often now, but every once in a while! That's all right by me! I enjoyed this!
