Banish the Night
Robin Laffan
11/01/00

Night is darkest when seen alone
Enveloped in a cityís embrace,
Sharing cold comfort with others I see
Each with an unknown face.

Condensing the shadows it summons
Within me,
The distant hum of a million lives
Surrounds me.
I stand apart and my loneliness
Confounds me.

No-one calls so I call no-one
Reinforcing the walls I am building
Losing myself in the shade I make
In a prison of my own creating

Yet all it takes to light the night,
Is a beacon, a lifeboat manís flare
Lit when I reach out to the hands I knew
And when others reach in from out there.

Others like me,
Wishing someone else would call.
Others like me,
Bitter at being alone.
Too bitter to light their own dark.

Your style conveyed the depth of the loneliness.  Well done!

Thanks both, glad you liked it. But lke I say it's up to you to light the beacon, don't wait for others to do it.

Excellent poem, Robin! I couldn't agree more...don't wait for someone else to extend a hand, extend your own hand first! The results can be amazing!
