My Life

When I was young
You told me what was right and wrong
You would hug me
Told me you love me
But somehow in me growing up
You told me how to live my life
You showed me you didn't approve
You compared me to my siblings
How could you have done that to me
Your eldest son
Tell me my life is messed up
When you had a hand in raising me
Push me to talk about things
Better left unsaid
Always putting in you two cents worth
By this time I had become bitter
Bitter at how you treated me
As a child of 8 years
I am now old enough to realize
That you did those things
Because you thought they would help me
But you did those things
Because you loved me
I am sorry that I took so many things wrong
I am sorry that I didn't see your love
You are my father
And I forgive you for all of the things
That I just couldn't forgive you for
I am happy that you are my father
I would have it no other way
I love you Dad

Scorched Dragon...this is a very good poem. I was very impressed with the maturation process of seeing things through the eyes of your father and love remained intact. Very well written. Being a parent is a hard job but it is worth it, especially when sons and daughters can write tributes such as this.

Thanx.  It is still hard to get through years of feelings and emotions.  But I am getting there.

Dragon~
As mom to a 7 year old boy...this hits home.  Such is the circle of life, I was 23 with a child of my own before I appreciated years of past and what my own parents had done for me.  Isn't it nice to be able to share that acceptance when it happens?  Great read!

There does come that time when we realize that what our parents did for us was for our benefit (most parents, I should say, mine among them...I was greatly blessed!)For me the full impact didn't hit me until I had children of my own. This is a great tribute to your father!

Interesting how it takes the passage of time for us to gain greater understanding of things we are sometimes to quick to judge.
It was that way with my father and I'm glad I came to enlightenment.  Your poem reminds me of the value of that enlightmenten.
Nice poem!

Scorched Dragon-

WONDERFUL !

I read with great interest (and a mother's heart) your maturation process.

Having been blessed with four simply amazing children, (we moms have a way of always thinking that)I have been touched by a time in each of their lives where they came to an understanding that having 'the meanest mother' in the neighborhood meant that they had a mom who loved them enough to set limits and expect the best out of them.
I smile with easy-remembering at seeing them each reach their understanding ... and sharing it with me.

I know your father has to be feeling pretty darned special right now.  And ... I'll bet you continue to reach for the reassurance that only he can give.

Bless you as you continue your quest for enlightenment.
