The Rowing Club

Each Thursday with the foggy dawn
They come to row upon waters calm
In uniform finery, crisp cotton whites
Performing rituals, ancient water rites

Tradition, one hundred years past
Many other customs faded fast
Ladies of the rowing club all sit tall
Octogenarian set, pride above all

Membership exclusive, relatively
Private regattas, slow and steady
To join one must descend from the tribe
And no one ever quits while still alive

In an old whaleboat of wood they glide
Taking advantage of the rising tide
The eldest of the group, ninety-five
In poor health but here she thrives

Ghost ship, starboard side, a pale mirage
Only she sees it, like some colorful montage
It’s the old guard, young again, calling her name
She reaches out, for her youth to reclaim

The ladies panic, and quickly row to shore
But she has gone to live her life once more

Very descriptive, life-affirming and poetic. I could feel myself being rowed around by these supposedly "old" ladies. Great work.

What a great visage..... and getting out there doing what they're doing keeps them going... I love it...

And slight is the sting of his trouble
Whose winnings are less than his worth;
For he who is honest is noble,
Whatever his fortunes or birth.~~~Alice Cary, ~Nobility~
