Of Oaks and Roses

Sitting in near silence hearing
only the drone of some far-off
tractor making ready for the
spring planting season
She worries about her own
garden, covered in
weeds, wasted
by neglect over  the
past years of her life
Memories are filled with
coffee and cigarettes
drugs and alcohol
pain and anger
Tomorrow appears in
the window, its face
a cancer, menacing  her
daring her to take on
the living of day-to-day
and the planting of  new
oaks and roses, laughing
at visions of strength
and beauty or even
a future at all
She takes a long, deep
breath, closing her eyes
Slowly, slowly her
eyes open again , looking
directly at tomorrow
She raises her fist, then
one by one, her fingers
bare her palm, revealing
three seeds in her hand
One acorn
One rose
One woman
Tomorrow fades,
knowing it won't be
seen until it grows
into today

Caroline,
You seem to be inspired or I'm seeing you in a new light? Your poem is magnificent. An epopee. In this one your talent is really showing. *L* Sy

As a gardener, I loved that piece.  My garden nurtures my soul as I nurture it.

This is so touching, two great symbols of strength and beauty.
There is so much in this poem. It's very well written and says so much

Read a comment from some high falootin poet type on the net that said anyone who uses roses or trees in their poetry was not worthy of reading... (read one of his poems and I thought it stunk)  I kinda have a thing for roses and oaks...  enjoyed very much... an excellent poem.

My friend, you hold much promise within your hands. Glad I am to have read this verse.

Now and forever, my heart hears ~one voice~.

Caroline, this is very well done. I'm not sure which is more striking....the poem or your picture. I'll call it a draw.

Wow, Caroline.  This is a lovely piece.  Exceptional imagery...and symbolism.  Indeed, the last lines are exquisite.
