Self Portrait

Bare and alone now
she talks into the night
The silent chill answers
she clutches it tightly

Speaking gently, she murmurs
Her parched lips, once luscious
Rounding syllables softly
while wielding her brushes

The hauntings have ruptured
her once flawless face
binding her bloody
to this sorrowful place

Canvas windows illumine
her only true light
from the oils and pastels
seeking shape through the night

Casting sadness and shade
from a colorless palette
stroking scenes of soiled centuries
dripping thickly about it

She paints through the darkness
Hope's fallen frail poet
No eyes for her pageant
And to no one she'll show it

Then long after the chiming
of Dusk's towers ring
She'll sleep, a pallid slumber,
and to Death's masterpiece, cling

Dear LadyClaire

I hardly know what to say. How sad and scarey. Is there any way I can help? Prayer to God always works for me. May I say one for you?

Bbuzz, Denise... thank you for your sweetness and concern, though this piece is not an appeal for help...just the halfhearted meanderings of a sometimes saddened pen.

Michael, Mike, Marge...thank you for reading and taking time to respond...so glad you enjoyed this.

Dark Angel and Dreamer...thank you both for taking time to read and reply. I'm pleased that you enjoyed it. I will take "chilling" as a compliment here...thanks.

M-Muse - I find your use of imagery quite exceptional, and the theme one of sad reality... The poem overall is a wonderful read....

Eloquent words, Claire -- a heartbreakingly beautiful poem.  Thank you.
