An auspicious day, a decision, with one flick of a fountain pen the years of debating, waiting finally came to an end. You shook your head in wonder, said I’d had more than my share, why throw away security, seemingly without care? I’ll miss these rolling hills, white horses grazing at dawn, barn owls calling in the night, arrival of spring’s first fawn. But this town is homogenized, too perfect in every way, antithesis of the real world, squirreling children away. No crime, no crowds, je ne sais quoi, and the best schools in the west, its always been short-lived to me, a place I loved to detest. So I’ll leap from cliff to cliff, nothing but the air below us holding on to little hands, trusting in time we’ll adjust. Wondering if you’ll come too, From your largest of cities, as far away as you could get, from a town like Mayberry. Blow a kiss, say goodbye, kids, wave through the back window, the station wagon, she’s all packed heading down the road to tomorrow. © 2000 Corinne Bailey |

I like this message a lot... It doesn't matter where your "Mayberry" is either.... It could be a small town or a large city - Everyone needs to experience new and different things in life... |

I admire your sense of adventure and courage! I live in the city in a row house (they'd call it a 'townhome' if it were in the suburbs...hehehe...it's nothing much at all) just a couple of miles from where I was born. I love to travel and see new places, but I always love to come back 'home' again. I don't think it would be easy for me to part with my 'little pile of bricks'! But who knows, maybe someday I'll surprise even myself! Great poem, Corinne! Denise |

Born and raised So. California... and for all my memory it's been in a 20 mile radius of the Inland Empire that I've lived. Never been the world traveler, but I've been back and forth too Canada more times than I can count on fingures and toes... Florida, Washington, Mexico. Seen a good portion of the western states, but I always come back here. Probably live and die here. Anyway... I though your poem was well written and thought provoking. Thanks for sharing... good luck on your travels through life. |
