Jimmy, My Son of Heart

He was as black as obsidian
and I, as white as milk,
he called me mom,
and I played the role,
seven years his senior only,
and he a tower above me.

He, almost eighteen
in a home for "wayward" youth,
but he not corrupt,
only without family.
The state became his place,
his education, his dinner table,
but would drop him from the tree
at eighteen
to be on his own,
dropped
into a world that had no place for him,
dropped
along way into homelessness,
with a history that trust didn’t know.

He became our son,
a son of heart,
my husband, his dad
and I his mom.
Soon after, I had a child,
my daughter teethed on his love,
smiled and cooed her pleasure at his play.

He taught me the beauty of giving.

Time and change lost him to me
twenty years ago, until today.
He called from the distance
that only years can make
with voice of gravel,
hi mom, he said.

Hi mom ,as if yesterday he sat across the table
eating spaghetti and waking with that cap
made from my old stocking
on his head to keep the curl down,
yesterday, twirling my child in the air of giggles,
a child that died at eight and missed him
many days, her brother Jimmy lost when she was six.

He, at fifty now with grandchildren,
I can hardly take it in,
does that make me a great-grandmother?

He said that not a day went by
in all that time
that he didn’t think of me
and wish me love and good life.
I melted of course,
my grief at his absence
a small thing compared to my pleasure
at his return.

I needed to shout the news,
my heart so happy felt,
and share this small miracle of time
with you.

In the dew of little things,
the heart finds its morning
and is refreshed.
(ee cummings)

Martie, you have truly touched my heart with this one. I do not have the words to describe what I felt while reading it. What a wonderful poet, and person, you are.

Rosemary, Michael and Denise, thank you so much for reading this and for your comments.  This was truly a wonderful way to start a new year for me, and for him too, I think.

Martie...what a wonderful poem and what a wonderful way to start off the new year. You have shown through your words, what we all see in you every day, that magnificent inner beauty that shines though like the sun. May 2000 be a wonderful year for you

Very heartfelt, I felt the need to shout the good news myself by the time I got to the end, but I refrained myself (the cat would have looked at me like I was nuts).  Wonderful poem!

Oh Martie...how sad, how lovely, how joyous all at once...you portray it all in so beautiful a way. Thanks for sharing this story with us!

Martie, your poem touched my heart....
Are there any plans in the works for a reunion?
Happy New Year to you and your family!

A soul that writes from the heart and shares it, truly gives a gift extraordinaire!

Yes, we are getting together for real hugs in February.
