There is a door in front of me
That wasn't there before
Which promises true ecstacy
If I walk through that door.

It beckons me with love devine
If I will but pass through
To taste the pleasures that are mine.
That door, my dear, is you.

I stand here just a step away
From everything you pledge
And yet it seems to me I may
Be standing on  a ledge

The great unknown lies just beyond
Just barely out of view
Thin ice that masks a frigid pond?
The doorway that is you.

It may just be that I am scared
I've walked through doors  before
To find that I was ill-prepared
For all that lay in store

And, yet, your words invite me so
I'm not sure what to do
Should I step through or should I go
From that door which is you.

If hesitation worries you
Please try to understand
Experiences I've been through
Cause me to stay my hand

Are you a door to heaven's gate
Or to the gates of Hell?
Will we find love or learn to hate
Each other? Who can tell?

So here I stand, with feet of lead
Without a single clue
Hold back or rush right through, instead
The doorway that is you.

Go halfway through and taste the wine, if it seems like a good year, then sip it ever so slowly.

Well, now..... If stepping through that door is nice and comfy and cozy, why wouldn't you?... Seems like a no-brainer to me...

Denise...good response. Thank you.

Elizabeth...against the rules. Sometimes you're not allowed to go in halfway and sip the wine. Ever try to go halfway into an elevator? Like it or not, you're going up or down!

Sharon...that's the rub. You don't know if it will make you happy or not.

Nan...Same thing . Sure, you're right IF you knew it was nice and comfy and cozy. You've seen that guarantee on doors you've passed through?

Balladeer the word "if" is just two letters, but sometimes it can stop a lot of sunshine in our lives.

Love the poem, and (((HUGS)) to send you courage.

More to the point: What will you lose if you don't, or should I say - Can you make work, whatever is left?

Balladeer, at least you have a choice...weigh the odds and see which is the better of the two. Sometimes we have no choice but to brave the unknown though.

Balladeer, you might want to just ring the doorbell and wait to see who answers.

Balladeer,
How does that saying go?
A coward suffers a thousand deaths
A brave man suffers but one.
Your poem is excellent,
But they always are. Sy

Best of luck, Balladeer, with whatever you decide. Fine work, by the way.

Betty....you are so right!

Rainbow..you don't know what you lose because you never got it to lose it!

Hoot...weighing the odds is language I can understand. Thank you.

Robert...Now there's something I never thought of!

rosesthorns...I thank you.

Sy...one or a thousand - you still die!

devina....women can be inspirational, for sure.

Elizabeth...thanks for the thoughts...but it's only fictional.

Chances never taken lead to misery in the end. If it feels so right, you know.  Sometimes you have to prepare yourself for what lies beyond that door, but if what is beyond that door, stirs your entire being...you better believe I'd take the risk.  Wonderful poem, my dear. (and even if it is fictional..it is all to true in life   ) Muy Bien!!

Ok, Balladeer, I'm taking the credit for having inspired this piece.  You commented on Portal, so I know you read it and got the inspiration for this, right?  Right?  LOL, just say yes.  I've always wanted to inspire great poetry!

How charged with punishments the scroll;
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

Well Balladeer...this is a tough one for sure.  Mixed emotions and all. No easy decison.  You're either happy with what you have in life or not. If not, then take a step through that door!

Lots of emotions here, but again, so well written!

Fictional eh?
Wow - imagine what would come out if it weren't - if you managed to be so convincing in this, I shudder to think of one of truth...! Lovely lovely work - crafted through yet another of your voices.

~Deep bows of appreciation~

will agree with severn on this one...if this isn't real emotion I can't imagine how one of truth could touch any more....but I do understand, I write many a poem in the abstract world of "if"....maybe someday I will get it together in the real one.....sigh.....beautiful poem...

Shame on you Balladeer for upsetting all these women with your fictional door.  I'm for walking through doors myself, even fictional ones.  Great poem!
