Old Friend Time

Lost my old love's heart years ago
For a while knew only ruin
Then old friend time patched my soul
And I commenced to find sweet union

Tireless was my search
For new love to fill my need
Feigned loves dance with many a damsel
But my scared heart would not bleed

An umseemly score kept in my head
Very few were twice
Almost always, only once
Painless departures my practiced device

Rather than offend
I never told the truth
Did not say my heart
Was not feeling the love of youth

Then I met a women of such grace
From the town where I was raised
Was at my class reunion
With love my heart was dazed

Was the most perfect evening
For months thought of nothing else
I kept in touch with my red-haired beauty
And tried to be my old self

Then she moved back home
To be near the offspring of her life
With a man whom she had once left
But that union quickly ended in strife

He beat her with manly fury
Was on a cold day
Cause she came home with nipples puckered
Only a fool would loose her that way

I wanted to kill him
With anything I could use
For to those that I love
No one can so abuse

At last again she agreed to meet
And in that first second I knew
My long journey was nearly ended
What my heart felt was true

But her old lover's fists were too hard
And in spite of our healing union
She broke it off in the blink of an eye
Old friend time and I are having another reunion

It sounds as though she just doesn't know how to love the right man, Tom.....

TomS -

This is a tender rendering of an all too frequent situation ...
just know that the scars of abuse take a very long time to heal ... if indeed they do.

Patience ... tender kindness ... the only salve to place on her wounds.

A wonderful piece.

It's amazing what time can do. If is meant to be, it will be.

Very sad story, the story of abuse...
I hope she can find it in her to like herself again and rejoin the world of real love...
Wonderful piece TomS....

A soul that writes from the heart and shares it, truly gives a gift extraordinaire!

Thanks all.  I don't reply much cause my old machine is so slow, and to reply to my stuff moves it back to the top of the forum, which  seems like cheating.  But I do enjoy coming here and reading all the heart-felt poems.  I feel like I have gotten to know some of you through your words alone.  Seems like ones passion feeds another.  This is truely an amazing place.  I am quite happy to have become a fledgling member.

Tom,"time heals all things"... or so I am told. When you suffer abuse it's hard to believe in love anymore, and time moves so slow. This I know. ((((HUGS))))

I must agree with Nan that it sounds like she doesn't know how to love the right one, and I must agree with everyone else as well!  Grat poem, but helps make me realize how stupid I was, for I have been in the same situation as her (sort of).
