This site seems to be quite thorough in checking your work for plagiarism....and it's free.

Good! After you type in text, it will tell you how many sites it appears on. On the right side, it will list a few. To see all of them click on the text you entered.

Happy hunting!

Coincidentally, a good friend of mine, Debra Mastaler, just wrote a nice little article about dealing with plagiarism.

If you do a search in the forums, Kit has also written some good stuff in the past. DMCA is a tool that can help even the playing field.

Thanks for the great information, Michael and Ron. And give Debra my thanks, too, Ron.

I found one of my poems. I checked for that one because I knew it had been stolen before and at the time I didn't know what else to do if the thief didn't reply back. You did mention to me at the time, Ron, to contact the hosting site to do a DMCA, but I was never able to figure out how to do that.

I found it on 2 different sites this evening. I emailed the author of the first who had it listed as Author Unknown and she replied back in about 5 minutes, apologizing profusely and credited me with it immediately. She said that she takes copyright seriously, that she always gives credit when she has the information, and that it had been sent to her a long time ago as Author Unknown.

I didn't hear back from the lady on the other site and could tell from the site that she had been on it a few minutes prior to my messaging her. I waited a couple of hours and used the hosting site locator and submitted the DMCA.

I imagine it could be a full time job if one wanted to check all their poems. I've spent quite a few hours just on this one poem.

Here is the link to the one who got back to me right away. Turn off your speakers if you want to see it but don't want to hear the music:

Thanks again for all the good information guys!

*laughing* If I thought someone wanted to take my stuff, I would no doubt have a fit of winces, and say "for cryin' out loud--not THAT one" and then I'd probably try to tell them which one to steal, but they'd have to let me edit first, and I'd spend months trying to decide whether to place a semi-colon, colon, hyphen, comma, but so very seldom do I use a period, unless it's an ellipsis, and sometimes even ellipses...

Actually, now that I think about it, I probably utilize the period as punctuation more often now-- after I've had my hysterectomy.

*freakin' contrary*

I know.

I...yi, yi.

Hmmm. Maybe I can find my stuff on a bad plagiarism site?

(I very nearly put a "Free Poetry on Curb" ad on Craigslist.)

But what if ... nobody came?

Oh Karen, I'm sure somebody has stolen something of yours from your treasure trove...just keep digging.

Use quotation marks around the particular lines or phrases that you are checking out, though, otherwise you'll get every link in the world that matches even one word.

You can just use a phrase or a couple of lines from the poem, Sue. Just be sure to put quotations marks around it so that you don't get results for every single word in the phrase or lines.

I don't even know what that means.

It means your stuff is being used on the internet somewhere. Check out the links that come up and see where they take you. If it leads you back to PIP that's cool. If it takes you anywhere else and you aren't the poster of it and you weren't credited as the author, then someone stole your lines.

I found a couple of mine back about 2 years ago at another site. They did acknowledge me as the author, but the took credit for the copyright if that is possible. Never could get them on the phone or respond to my e mails. I tell you they should be hung.

Thanks all for the great info...Paul

Ok, 'Deer...I looked into that site as to reading the rules and what not, but I haven't yet checked it out as to its safety overall. Have you done that yet?

There are actually a fair number of sites like the one Mike linked to, and every one of them simply puts a digital twist on a very old concept often called a Poor Man's Copyright. The technology has been upgraded, but it still walks and quacks just like a duck. None of these schemes has EVER been put to the test in a court of law. Until that happens they are, at best, a waste of time and money and, at worst, a false sense of security.
