Dearest pipTalk friends.

Those of you who know Elizabeth Santos are aware that she has been battling Parkinson's Disease for over a decade.

The time has come for Liz when her mobility is so impaired that she can't function well in her daily activities, and she's made a decision to take a major step to improve her life.

Liz will be going to Philadelphia tomorrow to prepare for major brain surgery.  On Tuesday morning she'll be going into the University of PA medical center for her operation.  This will be a 10 hour procedure, 8 of which she'll be awake.

They'll be implanting a nerve stimulator into her brain in order to alleviate her Parkinson's symptoms.  It will take several months for it to reach its full capacity, but the successfully implanted device has been known to reduce the symptoms of her disease by up to 50%.

She'll be in the hospital recovering for several days and in rehab for an undetermined time thereafter.  I'll be in touch with Liz's family about her progress and I'll post here.

Please - Join in our circle of prayer for Liz.  Her spirits are optimistic, and she sends her love to all of Passions in Poetry.  Liz says she'll appreciate all of the prayers and loving support she can get.

ps - Liz is a beautiful lady with an amazing talent.  If you're not familiar with her work, readsome of it here - http://poetrybyelizabeth.com

Ah, dear Liz! I don't know whether to feel happy or sad. I'm so sad for everything you have  gone through for so long and the surgery you will have to go through but I'm happy that the end of the road may be coming for such a horrible affliction. You are one of the kindest, nicest and gentlest persons I have ever met and my prayers will be with you every step of the way. Good luck, meter maid

Lady Santos...

I know of several people who have undergone this procedure...and it was done well over ten years ago, and they have all been quite successful. I know you will see some dramatic results because research has forged on with this disease, and many new procedures have come forth because of that research.

You are most definitely in my prayers.

Love,

POST SURGERY UPDATE - Good News...

Liz had her surgery yesterday, Tuesday.  She went into the operating room at 9:00am and was in recovery by sometime after 4:00pm.

The doctors reported to her children that she came through very well, and are optimistic about her recovery.  She was awake and responsive last night, answering key questions about orientation accurately.. and in Liz's own way, saying silly stuff and proceeding to giggle at herself.  Then she went to sleep with the help of some relaxing medications.

Each brain surgery patient responds differently, according to the doctors, so her recovery plan hasn't been determined as yet.  I spoke with Christina as she was headed back to the hospital, so there will surely be more info as the next couple of days ensue.

Stay tuned - We love you, Liz..

Whoooooo Hoooooo!  Did you apologize to Christina for me calling so late?  Sheesh, why can't it be the same time everywhere anyway?

If she is giggling then we are definitely out of the woods and into the sunshine.

I send my prayers and healing energy to her. Thanks for the information. If you speak with her please tell her I'm thinking of her and wishing her a speedy recover. So my phone rang today, and the caller ID said it was Liz's daughter, Christina...

I answer the phone, and GUESS WHO IT WAS!!!

LIZ CALLED.. Oh, happy day!  She's already in rehab, where she'll stay for a good couple of weeks or so.  She sounded great, and was in wonderful spirits (for just having undergone such serious surgery).  We had a nice brief chat and my day was complete.

If anyone would like to call her, email me and I'll send her cell phone number to you privately.  I know she'd love to hear from you folks.

I spoke with Liz again yesterday.  The news gets better.  She'll be going home on Friday, where she'll enjoy a host of in-home services to see her through her medical needs.  Her implant will be activated at that time, though she says she feels better now than she did  before her surgery.

Sometimes GOOD things happen for GOOD people!

I just talked to her the other day and she is home already.  She has some help coming into her place for meals, and chores, as well as her grown children dropping in daily.  She is so positive, and feeling better already.  She can hardly wait to "turn on the power," and see her new gizmo at work!  She has a nurse drop in each day for now, but soon she will be back on her own steam.  She is sure a positive person and that will speed up this process.  She sounds GREAT!

How awsome is that. I read through this  thread again this morning and am truly touched by your remarks. and all I see is friendship that grew out of our mutual love for poetry. keep writing, dear poets. you are awesome.

If you happen to venture back into this thread, please know that I am recuperated from the brain surgery and the results are more than what anyone could hope for, WHen I get up in the morning, I can actually walk. I can sign my name, I can dance and perform simple tasks that before were impossible. EAch day that passes is more hopeful than the day before and my children are very happy with the results. I couldn't ask for more. I thank God for this gift HE has given me. I appreciate everything so much more.'
Pretty soon I will be driving again
OK, I'll stop bragging,
Thank you for all your prayers. Now it's time to shift those thoughts to the victims in Arizona. May God be with their families.
Liz

So glad to see you here again Liz. I came across the Philly photos the other day and so many memories popped up in my mind. What a wonderful time we had at your house.

Liz?

Lady S...if you can join hands in a prayer for Earth Angel under Owl's posting here in announcements...a "yes, let's beat this together" type post?

I know it will help her SO much!

I remain, forever,

Liz, what wonderful news you posted here on the 13th!  The tears are rolling down my face with gratitude.  God is good, and He works so many miracles if only we ask.  Keep well and keep getting better and better.  I can't begin to imagine all the wonderful emotions your family must be going through, but I am so happy for them.

Lots of love and prayers

Liz,
So sorry for coming into this thread so late but I'm glad to hear you are doing so well after the surgery. My father (84) was recently diagnosed with Parkinsons. It's nice to know there is hope out there.
God speed your recovery.
