Our friend Balladeer asked me to let you know that he has been readmitted to the hospital and that surgery will be necessary. He doesn't know at this point how long he will be out of commission. Let's all send our healing thoughts and prayers his way.

I'll post any updates as soon as I hear anything.

Thanks all, friends. Still here...if the antibiotics work out it will be a routine surgery. If not, then it will be a little more problematic, with a bag for a few months and then another operation. Cheer for the antibiotics, please!

Almost impossible to get on the computer here so I'll get back in touch whenever I can, hopefully soon. Having friends like you really helps at times like these...I thank you all.

Ballad for a Dear

Michael Mack ain’t no ordinary Jack,
He’s a pillar amongst all men.
~ Known for his wit and his naughty charm,
And his story-telling pen.

There’s a boyish twinkle in his eyes.
His broad smile lights up a room.
And his poetry is loved by all.
~ His quill has quite the plume!

As of late ~ he’s been bummed out.
~ Things ain’t runnin’ as before.
He’s now laid up in the hospital,
~ With indignities galore!

But never fear, our Balladeer,
Will soon be on the mend.
Ya cain’t keep a good buck down,
~ God bless his bottom end!

~*~

Michael, know that my love and prayers are with you and that I am sending a s--tload of antibiotics your way via Angel Air Express!

Nurse Linda

Dear Mike,

Got back online this morning after a week out of town and find that you're scheduling surgery.  Really, Mike, a simple concession note would have done just as well, but you have such a flare for the dramatic, I guess you had to go for the bold statement.

I can't help the bad joke.  When a friend gets ill I get upset, and you are a friend, indeed.  Humor helps.  I'm glad you have the VA, the folks there are top notch, and it sounds like you're getting top notch treatment.  The anti-biotics will quiet things down internally, if I understand the message at a bit of a remove, and then they'll be able to go in and assess the situation and do stage one of the fix.  Maybe later they'll go back for stage two.

I hope everything goes very well indeed and that the pain that's been such a bother gets resolved.  I hope that they're able to deal with the underlying issues simply and straightforwardly.  I'll keep in touch.  I am offering prayers.  You already have my affection.

Love, Bob Kaven

I'm afraid it wasn't very successful. There were too many abcesses for them to continue safely. They did see that the bladder was trying to attach itself to the colon, which accounted for the majority of the pain and they repaired that, which gives me a bag to wear for some time and then I'll get to do it all again. Sorry....in kind of a lousy and painful mood tonight. Not sure when I'll get out. Let you know when I do. Thanks for all the thoughts....

Michael,

You are often in my thoughts.  This sounds like a hard time for you - probably scarey, painful and generally hideous.  I don't want to make jokes - I just want you better.  You are very missed.  We are here, and I know so many of us are sending our thoughts to you.

I had no idea that you were in pain and not well - I think of all the time you have spent with me on my poetry (probably when you felt pretty bad).  I can't express how much that means to me.

You are a pretty special person in my life and the things that you are teaching me will be part of me forever.  Thank you for the gift that keeps on giving.

Hang in there - easy for me to say, huh.  Well, hopefully, the bag is temporary and you will be pain free again.  That's my hope for you.  If I am needing to focus hopes and thoughts in another area, just let me know.

Grumpy, foul-tempered, cranky and mean - it won't change how I feel about you.  Give the nurses heck and come back when you can.

You are in my thoughts.

Alison (who marches to a different drum because she ain't go no rhythm)

Ah geez Michael.  I am so sorry you are having this trouble, and hope that you get out of there soon.  I know hospitals are not the nicest place to spend time really are they? Hitting a bucket of balls, will cheer you up when this is all over.  I just hope you get out of there period - and only go back when you have to and leave quickly.  Take care, you are loved.

Dear Mike,

You are loved, and I am praying for you as well.  I won't stop making the bad jokes because they help me cope and maybe help you too.  Besides, abcess makes the heart grow fonder.

I hope that the separation of one thing from another is a help.  My wife had a couple of abdominal operations which laid her up for a while a couple of years back.  I hope that you're more willing to use the pain meds than she was.  My understanding is that use of the pain meds helps the healing go faster unless they seriously give you bad side effects.

Most important is that you get some notion of what you can contribute to the process so you actually feel you're doing something.  Not a bad time to do some writing, if you can get the concentration together, or simply doing some healing or whatever feels like it's helping your process along.  I know that the contribution you make here is missed, I can feel the change in energy around the place.  I know I miss you personally.

Affectionately yours,

Bob Kaven

Oh Michael, I'm sorry you're having a rough time.
I hope you get well and are out of there soon.
Keep your eye on the golf course and your arms out for [[[hugs]]] sweet poet.

Love and best wishes,

Need a Hug?

A little something told me
You were feeling kind of down,
And so I'd like to offer you
A smile to flip that frown.

A little something special
To inject into your day,
A light that comes from yonder,
Many miles and miles away.

I wonder if you truly know
The many different times,
That "you" have placed a grin upon
This tired face of mine?

It's time that I reciprocate,
My warm and caring friend,
Please know that I am here for you
To help your heart to mend.

A laugh, a smile, a giggle
Or some time to reminisce,
I'll send you all I can my 'Deer,
But first we'll start with this.

It's just a little note to say
In all sincerity,
How treasured that you truly are …
How much you mean to me.

So if you ever need a friend,
A shoulder, or an ear,
Please know that I am here for you,
To wipe away a tear.

I promise to remind you
How important that you are,
Your kind and caring qualities
That shine from near and far.

Your warm and giving nature
Always brightens up "my" day,
So here they come … a bunch of hugs,
They're headed right your way!

Dear Mike,

Thinking of you again today.  I've noticed the outpouring of good will here.  I think folks are happy to be able to give something back to you after all your poetry help over the years, and your personal kindness that the affection seems to come pouring out.  You certainly deserve it, even if you are crusty as a kaiser roll on occasion.

This reminds me of the Larson Cartoon.  Two polar bears are standing inside an igloo, taking a break for a moment from ripping the thing apart.  One of them turns to the other and says, "I love these things.  Crunchy one the outside, warm and chewy on the inside."

Pretty much describes you.  Get well quick.  Do it as painlessly as possible.  Do it for the Gipper.

All my besy, Bob Kaven

Susan, that was hitting below the belt! (not a place where I need to be hit right now!!!) Very effective, though

Moose, gotta say I love the poem but I have to tell ya, your concoction sounds good compared to some of the stuff I've seen here lately.

Good humor, Bob! I've got a return one that describes my feelings pretty well right now...two elephants standing in the meadow surrounded by sheep. Some of the sheep are bright red and laying feet up with x's instead of eyes. Others are grazing. One elephant turns to the other and says, "Hand me another tampon, will you, dear?"...Right now I'm feeling like the tampon.

Getting a real medical education here, which I've never had before, having never been sick with the exception of one bout of hyper-thyroidism and some pesky skin cancers, thanks to my love of the sun.

My original problem of the diverticulitis is the minor problem now. True, when they opened me up there were two abcesses and so much infection that they didn't want to take the chance of it spreading so decided to put anything off until the infection were more under control. WHile they were there poking around, however, they saw that the colon, due to the inflammation, was pressed against the bladder, which was causing the unbearable pain I had been experiencing for some time. Unbeknownst to me, it seems that, when two things like that make contact, they consider it a good idea to bond and become one. When that happens, I am told, it is called a fistula (or something like that) and that's when one learns the true meaning of pain. Fortunately for me, they caught it in time so I may not find out. I now have the privilege of wearing around the second greatest creation of the Marquis de Sade, ( the catheter being the first), a small bag that will take care of things while the colon and bladder go through their divorce proceedings. After around 6-8 weeks they will go in, patch things up, and take care of removing the original part of the colon with the abcesses. From that point on I should be home free and the bag will be history. I was a little bummed out about the bag for a while but I read the pamphlets and, on one page, it said that one could have enjoyable sex with the bag attached. I immediately called my girl and said, "Look! We can have enjoyable sex when I'm wearing the bag!" Since we didn't have sex before the bag, I considered that a plus!

Anyway, I've probably told you more than you wanted to know. It helps a little to write it down, though, and sharing it. The only thing keeping me in the hospital now is a case of dehydration which occured through all of this so I'm guzzling my glasses of water in the hopes I will be reunited with my easy chair soon.

I still continue to say that, being in the hospital, one is constantly reminded that whatever problems one may have are minor compared to what so many poor people are going through all over the world and I will continue to count my blessings for whatever good health I do have and for the friends I have....like all of you. God bless.....

Seriously, I have an idea of what you are going through and know how much pain you are going through and how disappointing the bag is...however, the bag is temporary and you are a strong man inside and out so I am not the least bit worried..

Take care and take your happy pills!

Just curious though, how the hell does one become dehydrated in a hospital??? Ah, what is the IV for then??  meh...make sure they take better care of you from here on out..

Good question, Susan. The answer is that they took me off IV's when the regular food started. Sure, I could stay hydrated with the IV but I ain't taking the IV home with me. They need to see I can manage without it. So far, by taking me off, the dehydration comes back. In the past 8 hours I've drunk 3 pitchers of water, 4 containers of fruit juice and two pints of milk....and still the minute I stop drinking I get the cottonmouth. I'm almost drowning myself and it still ain't doing it....quite discouraging! I will continue fighting the good fight, though. After all, I am the BALLADEER!!! Although I'm still officially on hiatus here, I'm here to offer my well wishes to you, dearest Michael!

You've been a wonderful friend to me ever since I first joined this community in December 2000, where I have been blessed to read all your masterfully crafted verses, whether touching to the bottom of the heart or inconceivably slapstick (often a combination of the two, LOL) and, even when we have argued in multiple discussion threads to the point where newbies might think we're total opposites of each other and want to have nothing to do with each other, LOL, that is much what makes families like this poetic one feel like families, not to mention all the more fun, and what makes us grow to appreciate each other all the more! (huggies) ^__^

Here's wishing you the most complete recovery as soon as possible, and utmost comfort each step of the way! =)

I'll be back soon in earnest to share new writes inspired by my latest volunteering efforts and catch up on the Alley! =)

Sincerely,
Noah Eaton

Dear Mike,

Dehydration could be because you don't have the same length of gut for the water to absorb through.  Why not ask your doctor instead of imagining it's because of some sort of complication.  The gut's complicated, so nature's simplified it for easy reading by positioning the various twistings of the thing on page-like leaves of tissue called mesentery  that surgeons can more or less page through to get where they're going.  As the guy if the work he did is far enough down so that  most of the water's already been absorbed through the walls of the bowel or not.

Most of the absorption happens, as I understand it, in the large bowel, and most of that doesn't touch on the bladder, but everybody's different.  That's why surgery is a festival every time and everything is always surprise! surprise! surprise!

Or at least that's what I'm told.

If you ask, and they say no, then you can follow up with other questions that might get you more information.  Information for me has always helped my anxiety.  Though people are built differently about that sort of thing.

Just had an earthquake and some aftershocks here in LA, and my insides are still trembling a little bit.  I've always figured that ground was supposed to be sort of dependable, if you know what I mean, and I get upset with it when it isn't.  Talk about me having nerve though, to be angry at a planet for doing the things that a planet does.

     Tango anybody?

     "You're welcome," says the planet.

To your very good health, Mike!

Yours, Bob Kaven

Dear Mike,

Heading out of town for a few days.  My father in law is in need of some attention.  Just thought you'd like to know that I'm officially upset at President Obama now for the way he seems to be backing off on his commitments to civil liberties, and for his refusal thus far to start giving back the ground that President Bush gobbled up on Presidential power.

More important for right now is that you get better quickly, that you get and stay hydrated, and that you get out of and stay out of pain.

If anything's going to be a pain for you in that neck of the woods, I plan for it to be me.  See you in a couple of days.  Keep on getting better as fast as you can.

All my best,  Bob Kaven

Problem was, into2b, I had cut back on my Spam intake, which probably led to this whole thing!

Thanks again, special friends. This, too, shall pass....maybe not as quickly as I'd like, but it will only be a memory one day and life will go on. I await that day..

I never could get them past my lips, thought they were disgusting. So why is it I'm the one that got the big C when I favored sliced apple, fresh spinach leaves and lacy Swiss cheese sandwiches? LOL.

If I had been a qualified nurse,
I'm sure I would have nursed you,
comforted you in all your pain.
But I am just a simple Dutchie,
with only love in heart and brain.

They say that love is healing too,
I hope, my friend, that that is true.

So, darling Mike, sweet Balladeer,
I'm sending love your way,
along with knuffels (the healing ones),
in hope you'll have a painless day.

take care, Titia

I just began wondering if you'd really say when you're well, with all this love and attention flowing your way.  Wouldn't it be tempting to just let it flow a little longer?  Of course, you know I'm kidding but seriously keeping you in my prayers because your health situation is no laughing matter.

God bless,
  Rae

Thank you, dutchie. Knuffels are always good medicine for anything that ails one

Thanks for the thoughts, folks. Things are progressing here, just trying to take things low-key and make the adjustments. The discomfort and pain are basically gone and, although I'm not a ball of fire yet and sleep a lot, I still consider myself a lucky man. How our medical profession can do what they do astounds me and I'm a very grateful person, I assure you.

I wish you all a wonderful week

I've just returned from your neck of the woods... now aren't you proud of me for leaving you alone? I figured you had enough pain to deal with... but the temptation to call was mighty... especially when I was at the airport and saw the place where you picked me up. *S*

Get well soon, Deer One... I hope your recovery is rapid and soon all your pains will be those you give the bugs and Democrats. *G* smooooooooooooooooooooches

Of course. *G*

You know Toe always speculates about where your brain is located and I wasn't sure how much damage the docs had done... so I tried to keep things simple for you. LOL

Now... if you two gentlemen would quit entertaining the nurses and remember that your really appreciative audience is waiting not too patiently??? LOL

Guys....would you just get well, and be an anthem to longevity, for once and for all?

Especially all?

I mean, heck, Ron probably means to take this forum into the year 3000...

so get with it, will ya?

Suthern gal, Toe ruined my record. For the 23 years I've been with Fran, years of good times, bad times and some very painful times, she has never seen me cry....and then Toerag had to call me to wish me well. Not sure I can bash the old degenerate anytime soon....

Balladeer, my friend, I am glad you are progressing. Take it nice and slow. Don't over do it. You are surely missed.

Dear Deer, I was thinking about sending you an email but you're so ding dang popular, you must be overwhelmed by an In Box stuffed to the nines! ~ and this angel nurse would not want to tucker the poor buckaroo out! Oh, no! Not me!

So I'll just send a warm, healing cyber hug instead!

Michael,
Just get off your arse and out of bed!!!!
LOL, just kidding.
Hope the healing is progressing. It takes longer than you might think for those danged surgical wounds to recover, but eventually, they heal nicely and you'll have something to show off.
