In July, 2002, our twin web servers, Apollo and Artemis, went on-line and have served our poetic community faithfully ever since. But six years is an awfully long time in this computer age where, according to Moore's Law, the trend is for our electronics to improve exponentially, doubling every two years. That essentially means that today's computers are roughly eight times more powerful than our aging twins.

Even the Greek gods didn't last forever.

Sometime in the next few weeks, pipTalk.com will be moving to a new server. In all honestly, I've put this off for about as long as I dare. The amount of data in our database is prodigious, and the prospect of moving it to a new computer is daunting. However, for that very reason, I can no longer afford to delay. The 18.2 Gigabyte SCSI hard disk on Artemis is, literally, almost overflowing with poetry. We're running out of places to put stuff.

I've spent the past several weeks writing scripts to automate the process of moving bytes, reassigning ownership, setting permissions, and all the other various functions required to move the forums. Very soon, probably by this coming weekend, we'll be ready. I don't have an exact date and time yet.

Obviously, the forums will be closed during the move. Less obviously, since we're moving to a new computer and a new IP address, the forums will remain closed even after the move is complete, while we wait for the Domain Name System (DNS) to be updated. The last time we moved that took several days, with some people not finding the new server for nearly a week. Technology has improved since those days, however, and DNS usually takes less than an hour. So, with any luck, we'll be down no more than three or four hours.

I have a lot of admiration for Moore's Law, but I have a lot of respect and downright fear for Murphy's. If you have anything in the forums that you haven't already backed up on your own computer (shame on you), now would the time to do that. I think the chance of losing any data is infinitesimally small. But that never seems to matter to Murphy. Stuff happens. Make darn sure it doesn't happen to you.

Thanks for the heads-up, Ron. OF course, I've never saved anything on this new computer, and no longer have access to the old one. BOOHOO. Does this mean I must 'open' then copy everything individually? Is there a fast/quick/easy way to do this????
I may just go in and grab a small handful of favorites and leave the rest to Murphy's whims!
Most of it can blow in the dust and not be missed anyway.

Kacy,

I think if you were to do a search on your name for your poetry, you'll be able to copy fairly easily everything you've ever written.

Provided it gets done before the weekend, of course!

Karilea, I suppose each post would have to 'open' to be able to save it? Sigh, it would be GREAT to just click forum full of title, but can't imagine how the write would save that way. I'm hallucinating, right?
Seriously, I will start this task this afternoon!

LOL...yep!

But at least you'll have all of the titles and forums in front of you, and that helps a great deal!
But I'll bet if Ron knows a faster way, he'll share!

It sounds like you've been a busy man, Ron ... but that is no surprise, lol

Good luck with the upcoming move. I hope everything goes smoothly. Of course, I do have one question.  Does your new server have his/her new name yet?

no Zach, you don't have to. Only if you want to, and for just in case. If you already have them on your computer or in a notebook, then no worries. If you are worried that you posted something directly on here and don't have a copy then I would for sure copy what you don't have.

God Speed Ron. Your site is a blessing. Thanks for your time and efforts. I hope good ol' no name serves us well in the future, Apollo and Artemis sure have.

Oh, and if you continue the trend of paying homage to the greeks when you name the new server I suggest Socrates or Aristotle. ^_^

I've never backed up my poetry from Piptalk and now would probably be a good idea. Whats the easiest way to do that?
Excited about the new servers!

Thankfully, since I always write my stuff in advance on my computer, on Wordpad, everything is saved on my hard drive before I post here, so I'm good.
But does this mean the archives are going to be reset? Shame if so...I really like going back into them and enjoying people's kind comments and encouragement for my posts. Maybe I should copy all of those comments and put 'em somewhere on my computer to keep. They always meant a lot to me.

Thanks for the heads up!

Soul drifter,

Normally, Ron doesn't lose anything. That's why you can go into the archives all the way back to 1999. However, to be on the safe side, he always lets people know that things "can be" lost. I.e, we back up our poems on our own computers. So, once Ron opens the doors after this weekend's workout, you should see everything as it was - and sometimes, we even see some new innovations on behalf of the Web Wizard...he loves to sneak in new gadgets and tricks now and then!

Serenity...

it's not the weekend yet! At least, not in my neck of the woods...

Ron, I love this site, you, and our "family of friends" so much that I send up my thanks whenever I enter this realm of poetic expressions, kindness, and kindred spirits.

pipTalk is literally the home that Ron built!

I was a girl guide and our motto was to always be prepared ~ and I follow that motto to this very day! All of my 1,200 plus poems have been saved as I have written them ~ on floppies +++ ~ then each disk is burned to a CD, on my hard-drive, and all titles and dates of my poems are recorded in  notebooks ~ I even have files of very special replies that I have received.

Am I prepared for any eventuality? ~ Heck, YES! ~ to the point of overkill! lol I don't do anything in half measures!

May all go well with the transferring of data! You're the MAN!!!

Sending lots of love ~ and added energy! ~ Oh, and some soothing potions to calm your over-taxed nerves!

Linda

A bit more than 225,000 topics later . . . we're back.

This is a very different web server, with a very different configuration. If anyone runs across something that doesn't seem to work correctly, please let me know. I'll be doing a bit of exploring myself and will be keeping a close eye on the forums for a while.

The forums are now running on Aries, Kit, a server formerly reserved for the main site. You've already met Aries. The main site is slow enough during the summer months that she can afford to share a few resources with her sibling, but I don't know how long that will last. Moving the main site to a new server, should the need arise (and it eventually will) is easy compared to an interactive forum with several gigabytes of data.

Good job Rob ... that's got to be a nice relief to have the switchover behind you.
