Greetings all ...
Been a long while since I've visited PIP, and unfortunately, what brings me back is tragedy...

On 10/05/07 my 23 yr old niece was riding her bike on a biking trail and was struck head on by another speeding cyclist. Her head took the impact of the other cyclists helmet, breaking her eye socket and nose, and was instantly knocked out.

15 minutes later she suffered a massive stroke from the bleeding in and on her brain. She had emergency surgery to cauterize the bleeding, and a chunk of her skull was removed to relieve pressure on the brain. The doctor cannot believe that this damage was caused from another cyclist, he thought she was struck by a car … the injuries are that massive. The doctors are keeping her in a drug-induced coma to let her brain heal and rest.

Jenny is a bright young girl, recently graduated college and began teaching.

According to the doctors her prognoses is poor at best. I choose not to accept it. I choose to pray, and ask anyone and everyone to join in that prayer.

Anyone care to join me?
I pray for strength for Jenny and her parents; I pray for knowledge and insight for the doctors; I pray for healing and recovery; I pray that we see the same Jenny we all know and love when they wake her up;
I pray for a miracle.
Amen

Thank you for for reading and listening to my nieces needs.
God Bless

~Sheri

In the darkness of our own minds do we search... do we heal, as the shadows close in can we beat back the tide of death.

With loss or near loss do we as humanity realize the fragility of not only our world but our own bodies, then do we reach out to the light.

We must understand life.

The one thing we can never grasp.

Light.

As in life it is fleeting.

yet in prayer it is never ending.

With prayer can we as people do wonders.

In this time... wonders would be a blessing.

In this time are they needed the most.

Send a blessing or a prayer... whether you believe or not.

Think in passing or while you get on with your day, but keep the thought alive.

To Live.

To Go Forward With Life.

Keep that in you mind.

and hope this day ends well.

My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Irie,
Tragedy seems to come from nowhere and devastate us. I am so sorry for your pain. Your prayer is for all the right things and all the right reasons. I pray God answers your prayer. May you all find strength to endure and peace with whatever comes. God bless.

Thank you all for your words and prayers.
I was finally able to see Jenny today and I was shocked by her appearance. I cannot believe a bicyclist’s helmet did this kind of damage.
They are doing an MRI as we speak to determine the damage the stroke caused. Apparently she is still having small strokes, and with each one more damage occurs.
The outlook is not good, but I still keep hope for a miracle. One never knows what can happen.

On another note, I discovered that my aunts husbands niece Karissa, was admitted to the same hospital today, two doors down from Jenny. She is in critical condition with a flesh-eating bacteria and her prognosis is grim.

Unbelievable …

Again, thank you all. I will keep you updated as I can.
God Bless

...and now, Karissa?!? How unbelievably dreadful it is that she has contracted the flesh-eating disease!

I will add her to my prayers, as well. I cannot tell you how badly I feel for Jenny and Karissa and for all those who love them.

They both are still critical.

Jenny if off all meds that were keeping her in a coma, along with any pain meds they had her on. She is still not waking up.
95% of her left brain is damaged.
On a good note however, she does seem to notice when her parents are in the room, her blood pressure and heart rate increase when they talk to her. She has opened one eye, but it is unknown if she can see or if she is registering anything. She has pneumonia but can breath on her own. Once she has been cleared of hte pneumonia, they will remove her from ICU to her own room.
It is just a waiting game right now and we are all in neutral, waiting.

Karissa has had more surgery, but they have managed to slow the bleeding down from her wounds but still cannot stop it. They have had to remove so much flesh, her ribs and bones in her arm are completely exposed.
She is touch and go from day to day.

Again, thank you all so much and I will update agains soon.

Irie, it is almost beyond comprehension what Jenny and Karissa are going through. I am sick at heart and am unable to adequately express the depth of my compassion and sympathies to each of them and to those who love them.

You will all continue to be in my thoughts and prayers.

Karissa seems to be holding up and looks like they may have the bacteria under control.
She has been moved from ICU to acute care, ventilator has been removed and she is sitting up and eating on her own and is talking.
However, she is going to have a long, painful recovery and several surgeries in front of her to reconstruct her upper arm and chest wall.

They will take muscle and tissue from her back and legs to start …

Jenny’s pneumonia has cleared and they have removed her from the ventilator as well. She has all been removed from the ICU and placed in the neuro unit. She still has not woken, but is moving her left side and sometimes her right. Her mom stated that Jenny's friend came to visit and twice they think she cracked a smile (which is excellent news if it was actually a smile). They are remaining guarded and riding in neutral for now.

Jenny will be moved in the next week or so, to a facility other than the hospital that can take care of her.

That is all I know for now.

Again, thank you all for your support and prayers.

I popped in for an up-date on Karissa and Jenny ~ and to let you know, that they are both in my thoughts and prayers EVERY day! ~ as well as those who love them. This must be unbelievably difficult to watch them go through their respective traumas, trials, and tribulations. Hang on to every little itty bitty bit of progress they make. They are now heading in the right direction.

With much love and healing hugs,

Linda

Well, I have news.

Karissa is home and doing quite well. She has had a couple of skin grafts and is preparing for more reconstructive surgery in the near future, as she lost so much flash & muscle.
But for now .. things are really good for her. Though her recovery will be tough and painful .. it is a recovery..

Jenny has been moved from the trauma center and placed in a nursing home/ rehab center. She spent twenty five days there before she began to slowly wake up.
She has been moved again to a more suitable center as she needs more aggressive treatment and rehab.  Her body began building calcium on her hip muscles ( I guess this is do to trauma) and it is very painful for her, and she cries when they move that area. The good news, she is crying. She smiles when her friends tell her jokes, and is very sad and sometimes cries when visitors leave her. The full extent of the brain damage is 95% of her left brain … but, I think she may surprise us all. She is learning to eat on her own and make some movement.

I believe her mind for the most part is there, as is her spirit. She is a strong young lady and I hope and pray to see a major come back from her.

I will update again when I can.

Thank you so much for all of your prayers.

Hello ... Here is an update from Jenny's mom ...

Hi Everyone,

Jenny's stay at the rehab center has now been extended to Janurary 31st.  She is making  good progress with her physical therapy.
She was able with assistance to take a few steps with her right foot sliding it forward and then moving her left foot. She still needs to make more progress eating. She can eat most any kind of food but just doesn't seem to have too much of an appetite. Please pray for progress in this area.
Sunday, Jenny went out for one hour on her first field trip to the Museum of History and Industry near the University. We all traveled in a wheel chair assessible van with a Recreational Therapist who accompanied us on the field trip. Jenny seemed to enjoy the trip.  It was a little cold but the sun was out which was great. Jenny can now say "Mom" and "Wow".  Jenny had a great weekend!

So, that is all I have for now.

Karissa is on her road to recovery .. and is doing well.

Again, thank you all for your continued prayers! God Bless ...

Well, I finally was able to go see Jenny for the first time since she has been awake.

It was an interesting visit.

She knew who I was right away and was very excited to see me.
She asked how I was and about Daniel(my son) in very few words.
She struggles to get words out and has trouble with certain sounds.

I can tell Jenny is the same Jenny. Her personality is still very much the same.

Communicating is difficult because she struggles to get words and sounds out.
Much of everything is two to three words. She was able to tell me very clearly she loved me.

She saw a picture of Daniel and was excited, she would like to see him, so we will arrange that.

While visiting a commercial came on the TV for brownies and she became very excited. She ooooo'd and ahhhhh'd about it.
So, I will have Daniel help make a batch of brownies before we go for our next visit.

She tried to tell her Cheryl ( her mom ) something but Cheryl was not picking up. Jenny got up, walked a slow and limping walk
to her room and came back with a camera. Jenny wanted to take a picture with me.
She is still the very same sweet girl she always was.

She can read short sentences and understand most of them.

She can write very little, and has to use her left hand now as her right arm and hand are partially paralyzed from the brain damage.
However, therapy seems to think with hard work she can get more use of her arm and hand.

Anyway, her main issue now seems to be the fact that she doesn’t understand certain things or have the comprehensive abilities.
I think the best way I can describe how she is, is this. It was like she is an adult and toddler at the same time.
I was very odd to see what she can and cannot do. Encouraging and depressing at the same time.
She must be very frustrated .. ..

Well, that is all I have for now.
And thank you for continued prayers.

Oh, Karissa is doing VERY well. She is enrolled in school and is on the right path in life.

Sheri
