My annual Nan's Birthday post. Wrote this in 2000, I think.

A Dance Around the Lighthouse

Candles don't give off enough light
to find the words to spell out
how she beckons, how her
meaning thrives; this girl's
alive and that's not
just poetry.

Once I followed her to a
blue page somewhere
in the midst of destiny
on the edge of a cybersea.
And now, because I saw her
name on a screen
and rediscovered triple meanings
of words and phrases
and my thesaurus with
dog-eared pages,
she's probably one of the reasons
my real work is verse on napkins
in a plane on the way to Cape Cod
or stopping in the aisle at the
grocery store in the middle
of shopping for pasta
to grab that phrase or word
that must be written down.
The 9-5 thing just funds it.

And the thing is, I really don't
quite know how to say thank her
except to follow all the others
down the rocks to the other side
of Falmouth somewhere
'til we see her light shining
bright from the window at the top
of a red and white lighthouse,
trip up the boulders to get there
and dance around until the sun
comes up over ocean foam
splashing salt in our faces
to wake us up because
it seems so much like a dream.

So, here I am with the rest,
dancing 'til dawn,
rationale gone,
elated to say I knew her when
there was something
very special going on
and she was a major part of it.
Today, she is the lighthouse,
and when we all heard, we
followed the rays coming from her window
to gather 'round
and dance.
