Today I received the following email from our PiP Member, Beki
quote:
marge  thank you  could i ask for your  prayers? I have
had the hardest 9 weeks of my life, read  here   _Caleb is in  the Hospital_
http://www.sacrivox.com/caleb.html        and you will understand...this is
about my son...Also here Caleb Is In The Hospital blog http://www.sacrivox.com/blog/
(blog is our daily updates for friends and family)...go back to the beginning...when you  have time.....
briefly, he went to the hospital coughing up blood and they found  a mass in  his lung which was not supposed to be cancer but was...
when they  removed it there was a freak accident/complication which stopped the blood flow  to his whole body below his lungs and heart...
there followed many many hours of  surgery to save his life resulting in the loss of his kidney and most of his  colon.....three extremely major surgeries in 26 hours and many many complications since making his recovery very very slow and painful. He is only  21 marge...so much for someone his age to go through......I have been living at  the hospital 18 hours a day until last week when i really had to go back to  work. Please pray for him...for his recovery. for relief of his pain, for the  cancer to truly be gone

thanks so much,
beki

Please, yes, let Beki know that our prayers will be with Caleb and all of the family...

This is not good...so please let her know, Marge, if there is anything else we can do?

God be with Caleb, his family...

this is the time when prayers are heard.

I have sent her an email letting her know of this thread ... and asking what more we can do~

I did notice on the FIRST BLOG LINK a place for DONATIONS ... ?? ... maybe for some that might be the way to help, as Caleb has no insurance~

I'm sure each will find a way to help ... but I sure will find out from Beki what more is NEEDED~

Prayers are greatly appreciated ... as always~

I did a quick scan of Caleb's problems, but didn't find the donation link...yet. Thank you, Marge.

I am sure that those who can, will help out as they can...

in the meantime, we know how powerful our prayers can be...and it seems that from this site? Sometimes they seem a bit more powerful than we ever expect them to be, and in ways that are amazing.

Keep us apprised, my friend.

Caleb Reese is in the Hospital

UPDATE! – Click Here for the Blog
UPDATE! – Click Here for the Photo Gallery

Hey everyone, I'm sure most of you have heard that Caleb Reese has landed himself in the hospital. Silly man's got some weird stuff wrong with his abnormal lung (the left one). Most of us have been quite well aware that there was something abnormal about him, but did not expect that it had anything to do with his lung. We still believe that this is not all.

Now for the gritty details, Caleb’s left lung is abnormal and in fact he hasn’t really used much of it his entire life.  Well, to be specific he hasn’t used the lower half of his left lung his entire life.  For some reason, this abnormality has been causing a blood clot for quite some time now, and on Monday night in a fit of coughing rage, his lungs decided to expel part of that blood clot with a heap of fresh blood to keep it company on it’s short trip to the outside world (staining his carpet in the process).

So he was rushed to Hoag Hospital in Newport, thanks to Neal Shelton, and admitted to the ER.  He spent a few hours with ER docs and nurses scratching their heads.  Then whisked us off to a lovely isolation room in the brand new Gross Women’s Pavillion.  Interesting side note for this tour, Caleb was not only the first patient in the room he stayed in, he very well may have been the first male patient in the whole building.

The nurse’s were quite nice, and some were kinda cute too.  It wasn’t until after the bronchioscopy, which is where they stick a tube with a lens on it down your throat, on Wednesday that we really knew what was going on.  They finally took him off Isolation deciding that he definitely did not have Tuberculosis, and we no longer had to wear those stylish masks!

As a side note, Caleb does not have Health Insurance and whereas he will be applying for aid from the state, this little jaunt into Surgeryville will most likely total to several thousand $$'s. If you would like to help out, you can make a donation using the button below. Sorry, it's not tax deductible, didn't have time to go thru the government red tape.
MAKE DONATION icon just below it.

Hope that helps.

Thank you all so much for your concern and most especially your prayers...we know that is what has gotten him this far. The doctors tell us over and over again how amazed they are (but God is amazing isn't He?) because Caleb should not be here....they say perhaps because he is young and, except for the cancer, was very strong...if he were a 40 year old he never would have survived all this. But he has survived, and now we must keep him in prayer until he is completely healed and I have to believe he will be.

Today we had a 10 hour benefit concert fo rhim at a local club, 10 top rated southern california tribute bands played for 10 hours with all proceeds going to Caleb. it was an incredible day...Caleb is well known to  and well liked by most of the bands who donated their time because he roadies for his boss when his bands play. There was so much love in that club today, and they raised $2500. We are so thankful.. But mostly I am thankful to have had the opportunity to see how much others care about him...how much they really love him too. He appaently touches many many lives we know nothing about...till today. Listening to them speak about him I am proud to be his mother. So...

SPecific prayer need tonight...he has been complaining of pain in his upper leg which is new...before it was all below the  knee.SO they di dan ultrasound at his bedside and found a bloodclot in his thigh. They are treating it with medication and we hope very strongly it will be gone in a few days. In the meantime, pleas epray fo rhis pain and fo rthe doctors to have wisdom in treating it. Thank you all again.....

quick update - well, it seems they will begin radiation on his lung and on the mass near his spine on fri or mon. They seem confident it will wipe out the microscopic cells in hi slung but less sure it will really help the other newer mass. The scan he needs to thoroughly look for cancer throughout his body is an outpatient deal...they don't have that machine at the hospital so ther eis no way to do it. I asked why aren't they rushing him down to do MRI's everywhere at least and they said we can do that so i said then please push for it...but why did I have to ask? why did they not just do that on their own? They seem still very reluctant to deal with the mass in his pelvic area near his spine.,.....I am not sure what they are afraid of. Even now when they are telling us they believe now (they did not before) it is part of the lung disease they do not want to do surgery when theytold us that is ALL you CAN do for this cancer...they seem to think he would not be strong enough but he is very much healed now....better to look and know for sure what we are dealing with I think.

We are checking mor einto City of Hope but that is a hard choice to make because it is a good hour away...no one could stay with him all day, we could only see him on weekends I work an hour in the opposite direction so I could never get up there in time to see him after work. And if something happened it would takeme sooo long to get there......if this i s all the time we have I don't want him to be alone somewhere far away.

Oh how I relate to your heartache. I'd sure vote for having him at City of Hope even though it's a trek.  They are highly rated for cancer work. I went to their site a lot when my dauughter,Rebecca (Whtdove) was undergoing treatment.  I'm asking our Lord to give you all strength to endure the treatment.

God bless you all.

Thank you all fo ryour continued support and prayers. I am sorry I have not posted anything in so long, we have been busy with the holidays. Christmas was difficult, trying to balance family needs to have some sense of normalcy with Calebs need not to be alone on christmas. Thanks  to the friends who came to visit that day.....

Last week we received the devestating news that the new tumor is inoperable. At the beginning they told us the only way to fight this cancer was to cut it out, and keep cutting it out when it returns. To tell us they cannot cut this one out pretty much took all our hopes and dashed them on the floor. It was a very difficult week for all of us.

This week he is doing pretty well. Yesterday they removed the catheters for dialysis so he is officially through with that.....(happy dance time for the felling of the dialysis machine). His numbers (its always all about the numbers) are all coming down...white blood cells, calcium, etc - all the things they have been concerned about the last two weeks. He has had no fevers, positive blood cultures, infections etc for several weeks now and his kidney function continues to improve, as of yesterday it is working at 60% (after only 20% last week but that number does fluctuate a little based on what he eats etc). He is moving himself around in the bed pretty well even without the trapeze. SO, if you disregard the fact of his cancer, he is oding pretty good medically. He does still suffer the pain in his legs and feet but he says it is slowly getting just a little better. I confess to being concerned about the fact that he says part of his legs ar e numb, I will ask the docs about that friday when I am there.

Tomorrow he will have the PET scan we have been fighting for. It is essential to knowing exactly how widespread and where the cancer is. He is anxious about the ambulance ride he will take to the diagnostic center and about the needle they will use to inject the necessary dye. I confess I am terrified about what they will find out. But I also believe we really have to know, especially in order to make the best most informed decisions we can about his care, now and down the road.He i sjust finishing his second week of radiaiton treatments and so far the only side effect is complete exhaustion...the treatments themselves are not too bad and only last about 20 minutes but it is a huge ordeal to go there and come back. He must transfer to a gurney, be pushed through an underground tunnel down the hill to another building. be transferred to the hard cold steel radiaiton table, and then do it all in reverse to get back. He is usually 90 minutes away from his room.

He is suffering some pretty heavy depression this week and rightfully so, he has much to be depressed about. He needs support more than ever....

That's where we're at -- his radiation treatments will last about 6 weeks - he is getting 28 days but that does not include weekends and holidays. So far he has had 7 days....25% done. If he were up and walking around I am confident they would send him home and do radiaiton as an outpatient. I believe the only thing keeping him in the hospital  now is the fact he is not ambulatory. Oh yes, i fyou do come to see him, be forewarned he has lost a lot of weight, he is down to 159,. less than half what he used to weigh. They told us at the beginning every dau you lay in bed you lose 3% of your muscle mass, and I can se eit is true. He has virtually NO muscles left in his legs...he is so thin his shin protrudes and his calf skin hangs form his bones......his hips are bony and thin.,.....it is very discouraginf to see him this way. I don't know how anyone expects him to stand when there are no muscles in his legs to hold him up. I fear if he catches the slightest cold he will not be able to fight it.....I am trying to ge thim to work on some muscle building exercises with me and to eat more protein to build muscle...mostly he does not want to dealw ith it. ENCOURAGEMENT folks - that is what he needs this Christmas!

Now she will be hospitalized at least 5 days and I have to drive all day and night tomorrow to bring my granddaughter to stay with us...I swear I don't know how much one family is supposed to be able to take but I know I am very near my limit...I cannot be in two states with two kids in the hospital and looking out for my granddaughter and still working so I can make sure Ihave a place to sleep.......much prayer needed and appreciated my friends....

Oh my!  The seeds of faith need watering now more than ever.  The only advice I can give you is to pray your way through and when someone asks if there's anything they can do to help you, say, "Thanks, there is."  Whether they can make you a meal, babysit, do a couple loads of laundry or whatever, ASK them, please.  How I'd love to gather my bits of time and be there with them to relieve you somehow.  God only means for us to be one person.  Prayer will continue here and include each of you.  Thanks for allowing me to be a part of the prayer chain.

God bless you,

I wanted to share a few updates form the last week or so.....caleb finished radiation on friday and we are waiting to begin chemo soon. These ar ethe updates form his blog the last week ---

It has been a very very difficult week. On Monday we heard for the first time a realistic, honest prognosis for Caleb. It was devestating but even so I made them tell Caleb what they told us. They have been sugar coating the facts for him and it was time they recognized he is an adult and were straight with him. They say without chemo or if chemo does not work he has 4-6 months --and if chemo does have some effect the best we can hope for is 6 months more.Caleb does not accept this and of course wants to fight with anything he can so he wants to have the chemo. He finishes his radiaiton tomorrow, Dr Hafer cut it short by giving him higher doses all this week when he realized how crucial it is he begins chemo very very soon. And there in lies the current crisis - finding a place for Caleb to get the chemo..I have been running in circles all week as has our friend Rosie while we tried to make it happen.Tomorrow I have an appointment with the doctor medi cal considers his primary care provider and hopefully he will help us put all this into motion.

It seems City of Hope is not really an option anymore as they have changed their contracts for the new year and no longer accept his insurance. We are looking at ST Joseph's in Orange I think for chemo now. We will see how that works out. The whole medi cal system is very frustrating to work with. Caleb is progressing well with his physical therapy, as soon as he can walk we will take him home from the convalescent home where he absolutely does not belong. I think he is doing so well with his therapy for 2 reasons, first, he is highly motivated to leave that place, and two, he has no pain in his feet anymore......because they are numb. This would scare me except he seems to be able to move around pretty good. But because there is no longer pain he can stand a little and beging to walk. Amen for that! This week they had him walking the parallel bars a few times (they are about 6 feet long) and that is the first he has walked since he had his surgery.

It appears since City of Hope did not work out due to a change in their insurance contracts for the New Year that Caleb will have to receive chemotherapy here in Orange County, and his particular brand of Medi-Cal seems to point to St. Joseph's hospital. So while we were waiting to get that approved through proper channels we hatched a plan to expedite things a little. A friend who knows someone on staff there was told the best way to expedite it would be to get him admitted to the hospital, probably through the ER - then as a patient they would get him whatever doctors or treatment he needs. So we called his "treating" doctor at the nursing home and told him our grave concerns about his kidney (which were very real, I have been worried for days his kidney is shutting down - his urine output is significantly reduced, his urine dark and concentrated, like when he needed dialysis which he had only been off of for 3 weeks, and he was throwing up everything he ate) and he agreed it sounded like there was a kidney function problem so he would send him to an ER. We then suggested since he had to send him to an ER, could it be St. Joseph's...we explained our plan and he thought it was a great idea so he wrote the order to send him only to St Joseph's for possible renal failure. As it turned out, his kidney is doing ok, there is a slight problem but they think it is because of dehydration from throwing up, which means we still don't know why he is vomiting. But they did admit him to the hospital after the ER doctor spoke with his main doctor back at Hoag at length, and promised to a team of doctors would address his needs, including chemotherapy. So we will see where we stand today with all of that. They might not keep him in the hospital but at least we have paved the way for the chemo.

Today 1/15 - SInce being admitted to St Josephs caleb has had many tests scans and iltrasounds but he has yet to see the oncologist - they say he will se eus tomorrow. His problem seems to have been severe dehydration and since being poumped full of fluids in the hospital he has not thrown up even once. They want his kidney to be back up to speed with how it was and so will watch him a fe wmore days for that. In the meantime his heart rate jumped to 160 so they put him in a telemetry unit to keep track of that.  It is a daily guessing game what will come next but for now he is in the right hospital to get the chemo treatment we seek and we have to trust that part will work out too.

I do apologize for not being around but my whole time and energy is focussed on him.
I have to confess I am having a really difficult time - it is so hard just to go towork every day when all I want to do is be with him and hold him close. I thank you all for your support -

Beki, we can understand why you might be unable to post often. Sheesh, talk about having too much on your plate! Your resilience and strength is amazing.
It isn't much, but I shall light a healing thoughts candle for the whole family tonight.

Words fail me. I am overwhelmed by simply reading about what Caleb and the rest of the family is going through! I cannot even imagine actually experiencing it!

How is Charity doing? Is she home from the hospital now? If it doesn't rain ~ it pours!

Just know that there is power in PiP prayer! ~ And weeza prayin'!

thank you all - yes Charity went home from the hospital after 5 days. We made an overnight trip to poick up my granddaughter and keep her the wek then another overnight trip to take her home after Charity was released. We had great fun with Gracie while she was here. Charity is still fatigued but doing ok, she will have to be on blood thinners for about 9 months and can never take birth control pills again which did not make her happy but now they know she is at risk. I am sure she will be ok.

Beki, your hands may be full ~ but so is your loving heart.

That was a close one for Charity! Thank God she got through that one unscathed! ~ Mind you, she going to be inconvenienced by frequent blood tests while she is on anticoagulants. It is unfortunate, but as her doctors advise, it is prudent that she no longer use oral contraceptives. However, using a combination of other means, can be very effective in preventing an unwanted pregnancy. btw, some of them can be quite entertaining! Flirty 2

Your grandaughter, Gracie, sounds like a little ray of sunshine to brighten your days with her grace-full ways!

I send my love and comforting hugs to you all!

P.S. and I'm keeping a steady stream of prayers on the wing!

Happy to learn you did get into St. Josephs and that the vomiting has stopped.  Also thank God your daughter is out of the hospital now.

Wow, you just have to keep giving the heaviness to God to get through this.  My heart goes out to you, and I'll do my best to keep the prayers flowing.

  God bless
