Birth of a Novel

I remember that my first child was supposed to have been born November 5, 1970, and didn’t come along until December 6.  I thought THAT was a long birthing process.

This was longer.

On November 22, 2004, I signed a contract with PublishAmerica [PA], sent them a mailing list, [PiP members at their request], mailed an original copy to the Library of Congress [talk about a humbling experience…]; took my daughter out on one very cold December day [I believe it was a high of 19 degrees] to find the house that would best depict what my inner eye saw in the story line; submitted all required information, and then opted for their editors to give it “one more look” even after the many eyes that had perused rough drafts, talked my way into “one more round” of changes after the “one and only first round” of edits…[such a sweet talker!] and then…

I waited some more.  

On Halloween of October, 2005, I had the “treat” of  learning from East and West coast PiP friends that they were in receipt of the announcement that my book had been published.

On that same day, I received an email from PA that stated I should be receiving my Fed Ex’d author’s copies no later than November 2.

Early birth.  They arrived today.  21 days before the contract deadline.  Would you call this a premature birth?  

So, here’s what is going around in Press Releases, and such:

PA is offering the book at the rate of $19.95 plus shipping and handling.  I was amazed today when I Googled the title plus my last name and found that it is already available on international websites.  Some are offering it at the retail price of $24.95 plus shipping and handling.  Some are offering it a whole cent less than retail.  I had to laugh!

Here’s how I’m going to offer it to our PiP members.  $25.00 flat for US shipments, $30.00 USD for international shipments, which will include shipping and handling, plus, it will be autographed as you request.  By emailing me at krjungel@gmail.com , all I request is your name, street address, zip code or any international mailing information that may be required.  I will be sending it out “average mail”, which will mean, throughout USA, somewhere between 5-10 days delivery.  For now, a money order will suffice.  All addresses will be kept confidential.  

Finally, to all PiP members, my heartfelt appreciation and thank you, for your encouragement, support, and overall enthusiasm. For your love of writing, the emotional hand-holding, your beloved nagging, your questions, your anticipation.  Had I heard ONLY from you folks, it would have been enough to keep me jumping over the moon again and again.  But I’ve been getting some of the same enthusiasm from Salinans, long-distant family & friends, peers from Kansas Legal Professionals, oh, in so many ways!

I have been deeply blessed by the fact that so many of you have sent private, encouraging notes and emails, and patiently awaited throughout this “pregnancy”.

Finally…for those of you who know Fagin, my brother Robert.  He will get the first book.  He has been in the hospital again, has undergone two surgeries in the last month, and his daughter hopes that he will be home in time for Thanksgiving.  This book is due, in part, to his insistence that I follow through on something that I have held within me for a lifetime.  Now, it’s out.  All thanks to a fellow poet, a brother musician, someone who didn’t get the full chance to follow his dream, but encouraged his older sister to run, not walk…to pass Go…and collect…magic.

Sissie...you already know how excited I am...and hey, I ordered the book already as you know.  My son, Jay was born on Dec. 6th.  Interesting.  I can hardly wait to hold your book in my hands...but I'm going to need an autograph.  I'm sure we can work out something for that.  I'm very proud of you for following through with this tremendous accomplishment.  I will try to follow in your footsteps.

Janet Marie, I know what's in your

My order for books should be here in 2-3
weeks.  Earliest they will arrive is
November 14.   Being shipped by UPS,
I was told that there is "no way" to give
instructions to the driver as to where to
store the shipment once its here.
"Put a note on your door" was their best
advice.

LOL...So I'll do a little sleuthing locally
so that the shipment will be placed under
the back covered porch for weather purposes.

In the meantime, it looks good to say that
any orders received for Christmas presents
will indeed be received before Christmas
and ready to be put under the

Just a note...

This has been so much fun...

and orders have been coming in quite well, thank you!

I have heard from several people, half-way through the novel, that they hope to get the book for others in time for Christmas gifts.  No problem...IF you get your order in on time.

I am very aware of postal lines [trust me, I see them about every day now!] but we can do this...

so, follow the link provided on page 1 and see the beautiful work that Nan has accomplished, and get your order in on time for the loved ones in your life.

Do make sure that if you are ordering for more than yourself, that you let me know the names of your recipients.  Email me personally, and I will send your gift directly to your friend or family member.  All I will need is their address.

Two highlights of this week:  One was from a woman who needed to quote a line from one of the poems in the book.  For a very special, albeit sorrowful reason.  I was humbled to let her have "the lines", as she called them.

The highlight of the sorrowful occasion was that those lines brought some shine to the tears of the recipients.  That is what sharing is all about.

The other highlight of the week was that I've been asked more than once, now, if there would be a sequel to this book.  It was apparent they didn't read the book the whole way through.  [See the grin?] I just responded, "when you reach the end of the book, let me know if you still think there should be [a sequel]."

I will know soon enough if I need to scrap the 300 some pages that are waiting to find some progress.

Thank you all for letting me "bloom".  Being a first-timer with this kind of child...you are all being very kind, and extremely patient!  I will know in February if the publishing house will fully live up to its name.  It's hard, being an underdog in a dog-eat-cat world...but so far, being the guinea-pig in this venture?  I don't have gripe one.

And I thank, humbly, and with all sincerity, the people who shared with me the ins and outs and probable heart-ache of this venture.  I do appreciate your concerns, but so far....?

It's been a pleasant wonder.

HELLO DEAR KARILEA! YOUR FIRST SHIPMENT OVERSEAS ARRIVED SAFELY LAST FRIDAY  ... AND i am really EXCITED in telling you that I think, no I AM SURE that your first novel will be a bestseller! Motivations?

hmmmm ... it happens very rarely I must say, that I am pushed to read on, to turn the pages, to find hiding places where I can read in peace ... I actually neglected several of my week-end duties (working long hours throughout the week brings along quite some exigencies ...)! IT HAPPENED WITH YOUR BOOK ... I am more than halfway through and I LOVE IT!

The story is indeed very intriguing and totally after my heart! Whiskey and Geist are my friends by now and I look at my Zelda in a new way ..."could it be that she has some secrets for me?"...haha (My former cat KING MIZAR THE FIRST had some!).

The book is wonderfully written, dear Karilea. You have nothing to envy other writers of novels who have conquered the world with their books. And your name sounds fantastic too!

Of course I will be back to tell you my final impression. But you deserve my truest COMPLIMENTS for your achievement!

For now HUGS ... rushing home to see if I can go on reading for a while.

December 8 is coming up fast, and I have been preparing for the first "official" book signing.  We've already caught people off guard by having the signing at a very unconventional area...my chiropractor's office.

However, when one considers all they did to keep me in condition to stay at a computer for hours on end...it really makes sense.  Plus, their belief in my own dreams...well, that has a lot to do with it, as well. Even before the book was ever submitted...they said they would hold the first signing.  What is even better, is that as we throw ideas back and forth?  We keep coming up with ideas to expand one another's ideas...

And isn't that what it is all about?

As a good friend of mine said, recently...

"yup!"

   Just had to pop in and tell you how I'm enjoying your novel.  Just couldn't force myself out of bed until 12:30 today because I was captivated by your novel.  Usually, if I don't get into a book by the first page, I won't read it.  Your first paragraph was tremendous, and then the second, the third, and so on.   I'm not much of a reader, so you can imagine my delight!

December 8 – First “Official” Book Signing Engagement.

Well, Martie...

They say it takes your friends to keep you going…well this is one of the friends that kept me going every time the regular day job became too much for me, and when I wanted – no, make that needed, to escape to my own writing.  Dr. Doug Kempton, of Kempton Chiropractic, was the guy who made it possible for me to stay at my computer hours on end, just to see the completion of  a dream in progress…Yesterday’s Love.



His wonderful wife, Esther, first enjoyed the rough draft [but only got a partial portion of it for review] and she was one of the local people [aside from my several friends at PiP] that kept after me to finish, finish, finish.  When it was finally submitted and accepted for publication, her next query was, “when, when, when?”  

Once the book was in my hand, she placed a very large order for several of her staff and friends, who came to the signing for a personally autographed copy!



Having friends from both near and far by my side, the book signing was a wonderful success.  Louise, our own Bridget Shenachie, proved to be invaluable help in offering to take orders and keeping names straight for me.  Friends came up from Houston, just to share in the smiles for the day.  They, too, had previewed the book before it went out the door…and were as adamant as our PiP friends…it would work!



Dr. Doug and his wife, Esther, took advantage of a local media push for Christmas, and Santa hid his stash of cash at Kempton Chiropractic.  Rich Alexander interviewed Dr. Kempton and myself, as well as staff and guests, over the three hour broadcast.  Clients who came in to guess the amount of the cash stayed and enjoyed the wine, cheese and crackers.  Some even took home a book or two with them!  The Good Times Oldies radio folk – well, they had a good ol’ time, themselves!



I have to admit, though, that I was most singularly pleased when it became apparent to us that everyone came to the party.  For those of you who have read the book, or are in the process of reading the book, it’s easy enough for you to imagine just who is in the photo below!



What, you see them, too?  I thought you would.  They look very happy, don’t they?

I’m smiling here.  I’ve also run out of space to insert those smiling icons.  It was a very good day, Thursday.  Friday was just as great as I took in some more orders via email, and regular snail mail, too!  I even heard from my brother, who is selling books for me at the nursing home he is visiting for a while.  PiP poets have been so wonderful, and I thank you so much for your orders.  

Now’s a good time to thank Nan, too!  She has been diligently working on my website, and the PayPal link is operating perfectly!  She even got me to work up a bio [and I think I told her I’m not old enough to have one, yet…] and she will soon be adding a few of my poems to the site.  I guess now is as good a time to ask her, “what else do you want to add, Nan?”

Yea, now I’m grinning.  You see, I took off Thursday for the signing, Friday for the fun of it…and I’m taking off this coming Monday, too.  It’s about 6:42 a.m. as I finish this up for submission to the site, and after that?

I’m going to get back to the sequel!  I can hear someone groaning out there.  My God…shouldn’t she just take a break?  Well, yes, I probably should, Cora…but you see?  Those who have read the book…well, they want to know when the next one is coming out…

and we don’t want to let anyone down, now do we?

Aha.  I see the rocker moving.  [Insert supergrin here…]

If I weren't so black and blue...I think I'd be read and green, serenity...

In a year where so many things that weren't so good has happened to others.... ...it's been hard to know what to share, and what to just hush up about.

But people like you, m'dear...well, let's just say I hope you'll be given some breathing space to just enjoy it when you can.

It's been a HUGE learning experience....and it reminds me every day...that I will always have something to learn!

Okay,I know I should have finished this book by now but I have been dragging it out so it would not end by, leaving it at work. Now I have it home for the weekend and will finish... Darn. It is so good. Can't say a word because of those who have not started.  But I am living it along with Katrina. Thank you for this unusual book. How wonderful for you to have  produced it. martyjo

Thank you, ladies! It's been a lot of fun sending out the various orders...one can't even count it as work!

I'm tickled that the small town area where my husband went to high school - well, the local librarian was contacted by a friend from the neighborhood town of Solomon, and we have since talked with one another.  I have a presentation / signing for January 28, 2006 scheduled.

Solomon Valley Tribune was the first small paper to publish the Soddy Series - and as those who have read that series, and since, the book, might realize that there is good reason for me to hold my first presentation where "it all started", in a sense.

In a second conversation with the librarian, she was quite pleased to tell me that upon her telling others of this coming event, she has received some great enthusiasm toward it, and the Editor of the Solomon Valley Tribune wants to "do a full article" including photos for the January issue of the Tribune, which will come out before the presentation itself.  So we have a meeting on 12/26 to get all of this done.

Color me excited!

I'll keep you posted on the upcoming events!

Today is a special day...an anniversary of a loss; a belated acknowledgement of a beginning.  Thank you all for hugging in, holding on, believing with me, and asking for the second book.  It will come....and to borrow a loving and well-known phrase from the blue walls, "soon".  

It is very important to acknowledge that the ones that I miss so much are watching over us all of the time; and that means your beloveds are watching, as well.  I do not think we are meant to go through life without some link to another space or place to look forward to; otherwise, the recycling that life does on its own might not happen...if for not the idea of regeneration, in any form.

Ergo...everafter.

I've come to a stage in life that I must say to myself, "there's only this many hours in a day" and perhaps start abiding by them, if for no other reason than to get the second book done.

It is sometimes a difficult decision on how to prioritize "wants" instead of "needs".  I've been too long in the land of "needful"...now it is time to indulge, a while, in the "wantful" of dreams. What I want, needs to find its own space to grow.  

With all of you being there...

I know it will happen.

Yes, please! Perhaps it's just putting other's wants ahead of your own needs, to get another book cranked out.  Talent, you know, should not be wasted and your first book shows an abundance. I'll be in line, too.

Rae, thank you, and all of you, for reading this ongoing thread.  In a short two weeks, my workload has increased evermore than it was!  Hard to believe.  But, luckily, my boss is a great guy, loves to tell a joke, doesn't mind "splitting the madness" with some hilarity, and even pokes fun at himself.  Now there's a boss one can appreciate!!

So, ok, it's got to slow down sometime... I've got to find some more energy somewhere...and one of these days my dreams will cease from keeping my nights so busy that I wake up [as serenity says] "tard"!

And then of course, there's the thought of retirement, soon to be only 7 years away...

hee hee hee...

I guess tonight I could say that's a good thought to getting OLD....
