Morning,

Dixie had done one of these for Hurricane Katrina, and it sure helped settle the heart to know our friends were safe and sound.  I wondered could we start the same thing for Hurricane Rita so that all those that will be or are affected by this terrible hurricane can check in with us all here?

May you all stay safe, dry, and calm as possible during this storm, but please GET OUT now!  God speed.

wull, this morning, early, I tried to email J.L. Montgomery who posts in here from time to time.  He lives in Houston...he hasn't answered my email, which he usally would have by now.

There are presently 1.5 million people evacuating through and beyond Houston, so I imagine, JL and his family are getting out of Dogde.  I sure hope so! I should have written him sooner, and forgot...my oh my?

Still here in Houston, Sharon.  Can't get out at the moment as all the highways are backed up for up to 80 miles and not moving.  As soon as they open up the other lanes (opposite side of the roads), things may get to moving.  However...problem is, there is no place in Texas to go.  All the hotels and motels are full.  We have three dogs and a cat and the shelters will only let you come with one pet.  So....when we hit the road, we will be headed out of state.

The storm is starting to veer east.  For us, this is good as it will put us on the clean side of the storm as we are in West Houston.  If it continues this trend, we may end up staying.  In the meantime, we are packing and readying to leave.    *hugs*....jo

I wish jo (iliana) could have gotten out but I just have to keep the faith that she and her loved ones will be able to ride Rita out, unscathed!

Ruth and nan (suthern and pilgrimage) live in Texas as well but I don't know how close they are to the gulf coast.

Those who live in areas already hit by Katrina, are also in my prayers. The levees cannot withstand a torrential rainfall!

My hands are joining in the pip prayer circle! Prayer can move mountains so I'm hoping it can hold back hurricane winds and keep the waters at bay.

Love and prayers,
Linda

Just talked to Karen who wished you all a Happy Autumn Equinox, and said she is staying put at the hunting camp until it becomes a manditory evacuation because the highways are jammed!  They are ready to leave when they think it wise to do so, and will camp out for a couple of days then return to the camp when it is safe. There are irrigation trenches all around where she is now, and she feels safer there at the moment than out there with the mass of people.

They have a tent and supplies already packed and like so many are just waiting to hear if they HAVE to leave, and then they will take back roads to somewhere.

She asked you all just concentrate and BLOW!

Just checking in again.  There is still no way out of Houston.  Local news is advising many to just hunker down and prepare for high winds, etc.  We are at the very outskirts of the flood plain developed after the last bad hurricane in Houston and have not been asked to manditorily evacuate.  In fact, news advisors are telling people, they risk their lives getting in the mess of traffic right now which poetentially will be a death trap, too....so here we still are.  It is looking more and more like we will remain.

Hey....but one way to look at is that if we get out of this okay, at least we got some much needed photographs of our personal property and the house and cars taken (for insurance)!

I got the impression that Gunslinger is from Nothern Houston...maybe up by the Woodlands (not sure).  Kevo is in Corsicana, I think...which is probably safe.  Don't know where Walt is.

Prayers for all....and Karen, I just can't believe this is happening again!  Be sure you take mosquito repellent!   .....jo

Thanks for all your prayers....*hugging you all*

Karilea, the secrets been out for two days on the back roads....they are as bad as the main ones.  Nope....can't leave tonight.  Steve is saying maybe very early in the a.m. depending on whether the traffic is moving.  It is more dangerous at the moment to be stranded without gas out there on the potentially floody roads than to just stay put.  That's what Mayor White is telling us tonight.  So.......let's pray for moving traffic.

Also, the people who have gone north to Dallas are going to have problems as I hear it now.  Rita is predicted to stay over Dallas for 3 days....there will probably be severe flooding up that way, too.  If we're able to get out of here tomorrow am (early early), we'll go west with a tent.

If anyone needs a place to stay, come on by.  I'm in Andrews, up by the New Mexico border.  We won't even get rain from Rita.  We never get rain from anywhere.  Maybe that's why they call it the desert southwest?  Just head for Midland and keep on coming.

Serenity said, and I quote, "I am no dummy if they say, "Leave!" then I am leaving."   I would say she has headed north with the provisions and tent they got for sure, but know she left what she had behind in plastic tubs hoping they will float.  No answer on the phone makes me a tad nervous, very nervous - so no sleep again until the waiting game is over.  How much do these people have to be dished for it to be enough?

How quickly things change in a week.  Got a 7 day advance bus ticket Wednesday last, and left out this past Wednesday for coastal Texas.  Luckily, I have a sister in Austin, and I've been alongside her since about midnight Thursday, seeing how Brazoria county (south of Harris and southwest of Galveston counties) had a mandatory evacuation Wednesday and Thursday.  My dad got frustrated with traffic and went back home and rode it out, and only reported sporadic rain and some winds, but nothing major.  No infrastructure damage to speak of at all.  Rita was quite different than the last hurricane to hit that area in 1983, Alicia, when there was about a foot of shattered glass in most of Houston.

Though I'd love be leave out tomorrow night, odds are we might be better served by waiting until the middle of next week so that the traffic backlogs clear out.

Well, Balladeer, unlike most houses in Angleton, dad's is mortored river rock. external walls, and some internal (you can see where the original externals were), are a good foot thick.  In fact, local enforcement (who has dad do their taxes), designated his house as an emergency shelter.  It's stout, and has survived Camille, Carla, and Alicia.

Karen, and her family update:

As Noah would say, "I'm Doing a Happy Dance!"

After a gazillion attempts I finally got through to Karen and her family.  They are on I-10 heading back to New Orleans with a full tank of gas, and cursing the traffic.  The camp they were in was built about 100 years ago and still standing so they decided because of traffic congestion, to ride out Hurricane Rita there.

I said, "Wow that must sure have been some trip, wish I could have been there with you."  She said, "Sharon, it's not really the kind of thing you want to do twice and even you would have needed a drink or two."

So...they are not sure if they have power or not, (they before this hurricane,) but they will need a generator until they get it back.  She said, "Well, I just decided it was time to go home to face my next nervous breakdown."

They are safe, well, and still funny, so that is a "very good thing!"  They are strong folks that is for sure.

Well... I managed to evacuate right into the direct path of the storm... (don't be asking ME to buy lottery tickets LOL) and I can't say my sanity survived because I'm a quivering coward when it comes to heights and ended up trying to make roof repairs in the middle of Rita's wrath... and... I've spent FAR too much time in close quarters with a very old man and a very old cat. LOL But physically, we're all okay... and his place has no major structural damage in spite of downed trees everywhere.

He has water, phone... and a gas stove... but no electricity... With neither his chair lift nor his AC, Daddy's having difficulties. Unfortunately, a lot of those trees are down on power lines. *sigh*

Karen just called me, and said to thank you all for your ongoing concern for her and her family.  She said that she would be back with her family at Pipps before you know it.

Unfortunately, she got home to find a ransacked house, no power, and a horrific shock of what someone did to her house, and all her missing belongings.  It will take time to even clear a path as they left nothing unturned.  Tonight I light another candle to give her strength to just get through this disturbing violation.

Marti ~ Doing what we do now by being here for Karen is about all that we can do.  I know for a fact that she appreciates that more than we can ever imagine.  I too wish there was more I could do, but sometimes love is simply all one needs to get them through one more day.   We can always pray.

Ruth, it's good to hear you're ok. Hopefully it won't be too long before you get power. Is it possible to get a generator? I'm sure FEMA will pay for it especially as your dad needs to be comfortable!

Say a prayer for us, please... I don't know when I'll be able to update you... but we've had to call an ambulance for Daddy... Don't know where he'll end up since the hospitals around him are running on generator power... but he's too weak to stand and can't walk even with strong men on either side of him for support... We're hoping it's just the heat and he'll be better if we can get him somewhere cool... but who knows.

Hugs to all... and hoping hard.

Ruth, his electrolytes may be low (salt, sugar, potassium) from the relentless heat and perspiring them out of his body. That can make one extemely weak. He may also be suffering from dehydration.

When either of these conditions occur, the desire to eat diminishes, thereby making matters worse.

You've just weathered one of the worst storms of the century, and you and your Daddy will weather this one as well.

On closing this reply, I will spend some time in prayer that your father will be on the mend.

Love & healing prayers,
Linda

Yes...hoping, for him and for you too -- that's not an easy drive in good conditions, but after a hurricane and the travelling you've already had to do....

On a bit of a positive note in Karen's horrible homecoming - I forgot to tell you, that her two were there!  Yes they were!  Mike next door hates cats and even fed them for her until she got back.  They would not go close to anyone, but the second she called them they knew Mama was home.

Karen is sure one strong lady, that I learn from daily that is all I can tell you, but right now is a good time for her to simply just "puddle" in all the feelings this horrible experience created.  Just wash them all out and away, as I hope many will try to do, in order to move on.

She has plugged an extension cord into the neighbour's house and I bet she is one mean and nasty cleaning machine today!

Goddess bless her!

That is such good news about Karen's cats!  I'll bet Karen is thanking the God/Goddess right now for having a home to come home to...so many don't.  My thoughts and prayers continue for her.

Ruth, I am so sorry to hear your father is not well.  Know that both of you are in my prayers.   ....jo

Suthern, I pray your father's getting the help he needs and you're going to sleep well while he gets it.

Karen, My heart goes out to you learning not only was life turned upside down by the hurricane, but you were looted on top of it.  Gosh, it's hard to believe anyone could be so dispicable.  Those cats will warm your heart.  Lots of love and extra BIG hugs to you and yours.

suthern:  So glad you are safe and prayers are continuing for you and your father.  Hoping he will be fine in a day or two with some special care.

Karen:  What a terrible event for you to have to face. I do know what it is like to come home to a ransacked house and many missing treasures, but I have never gone through a hurricane along with it. I'm so glad your cats were safe! May you be also!

Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers... I appreciate them so much.

Tests show that Daddy had another stroke. That didn't surprise anyone since he could move his left side Sunday and can't now. And of course... he's disoriented, confused... and not at all happy about the whole situation. Forgive the sarcasm here... but at least he's now unhappy enough he's sharing his ire with everyone... and not just saving it up for my sister and me.

We don't know where we go from here - to be blunt, conditions in my hometown are on the level of a 3rd world country... no power, no gas, no food... and water is limited. The hospital is still on generator power, ambulances are only allowed to transport patients in life and death situations and all the rehab facilities are overflowing with evacuees from other rehabs and nursing homes... The places with openings are far away from where he is and there's no way to transport him.

And a bit more sarcasm *G*... To make my life still more joyous, I twisted my ankle while trying to empty all the food from Daddy's refrigerator and big freezer... so now my hustle is a hobbling one. *G*

I'm wondering if Carlsbad Caverns would allow me to curl up in one of their corners for a few days? *S* I've heard hurricanes don't reach there. LOL

Oh lord!  sometimes I wonder what these tests in life are all about.  I am SO sorry for you and hope that you are getting whatever help you need to cope through this horrific time.  Take care of you though Ruth, as you are sure not good to help anyone else if you don't do take care of you first   I wish I had a magic wand to make this all better for you there, I truly do.  I will pray it gets better for you and your family.

Update to you all from our Serenity:

I talked to Karen this morning, and she had me in stitches right from the get-go. I called her phone, and after 6 rings no one answered, so I called her cell phone.   I said, "Karen, your phone was ringing and ringing why didn't you answer it?  Didn't you hear it?"  She said, "Nope, the pole is gone that the phone line used to hang on silly!"  Well we laughed ourselves silly over that sick humor.  This was good as it changed some tears to something lighter.

She said she misses everyone desperately, and is staring at her monitor, as she has no hard-drive, and wondering when she can get power to get back on line.  They can't find their insurance adjuster even to get things dealt with, but are still trying.

Apparently all the recipients of N.O. love those MRE's (Meals ready to eat.)  She said, she adds water, and this little heating pack and presto - dinner is served!             I think I will just take her word for that.

She hopes to go to her sister's house soon to get online and say hello to everyone, as she still has no power, water, etc.  She is just still busy in the darn heat cleaning and getting things back in some livable condition.  She was working on her room today she said, and the power meter was being installed today, so that is a good sign, as they can't want for power.  A cool spell is expected there which they are praying will stay that way, as there is still word of another storm.  Sheesh!

So, that is the latest from Serenity, until she checks in.  Again, I was supposed to make sure you all know she really, really misses you and can't wait to get back.

MRE's, eh?  I'm kinda partial to Chicken Spaghetti....with Tabasco.  It is most amazing what that little tiny airline bottle of sweet goodness from Louisiana can do to an MRE.  Now, that ain't saying them's bad, mind ya....only a few of the entress are frankly downright nasty, no matter how much Tabasco is ladled on it.  Just be sure to have ample water to drink alongside yer MRE.  They's dehydrated, so you add water.  Add more to yourself while eating it or suffer the dire consequences three days later.

'Sides, when you really need all the energy you can get, 4000 calories/MRE ain't all that bad.  This coming from a guy with a super high metabolism, mind ya.

Suthern, I can't believe the trials you're enduring all at once.  It's good you can laugh about dad's disposition, it helps keep sanity.  Carlsbad, huh?  I remember almost freezing in there one hot summer day.  It's pretty dank, too.

God bless you (dad and sister, too)
