Hi guys! I've had the most exciting news, and it still hasn't completely sunk in yet.

I applied for a new job a little while ago, and I've just got the news that I got the job!

But... (deep breath)... it's in Japan.

So it means moving to a new job, a new city, a new country, new friends... I'm excited, nervous, a bit worried, all feelings that I'm sure are very normal given the situation I'm now in!

I'm not sure when I'm leaving or where in Japan I'm going to, I'll be getting a letter tomorrow giving me the details. But I'll definitely be gone for a minimum of 12 months.

So I was wondering if you guys have any suggestions on how to make the transition easier? I've moved plenty of times before, but this is major. I've never even holidayed overseas!

If you're interested, have a look at this website... http://www.teachinjapan.com and that will tell you all about what I'm doing.

A friend of mine had a similar job for a year.  She loved the experience and has nothing but positive things to say about her stay in Japan.

Go - be well - Have a grand time - and bring your computer.  PiP works over there too...

What an exciting new opportunity, Becky!  I'm so happy for you!  Once you get your letter, explain to us a little more of what you will be doing, as I am interested to find out all of the new things that you will be taking on.  As Nan says, just take that computer with you - and we'll continue to holds hands across the ocean!

That is wonderful! I've also considered something like this, having talked to a similar company a few years ago. Keep us posted, please! This looks like a legitimate company too, but you really do have to check their credentials and make sure they are who they say they are, for your own protection.
Good luck on this adventure!

Update...

Got my letter today! I'll be working from the Multi Media Unit in Osaka, which means I'll be teaching a teleconferencing system. I'll have four students at a time. The Unit is open 24 hours a day, so students can take lessons whenever it suits them.

I went to an information session before I had my interview, and I'm confident that this company is legitimate. They've been in operation since 1981, and in Australia since 1999, and they're listed on the Japanese Stock Exchange. They have over 600 branches across Japan and over 6 000 teachers, making them the biggest employer of foreigners in Japan. They have nine offices worldwide - two in Japan, one in Australia, one in the UK, one in Canada, three in the US and one in France.

I'll definitely keep you all updated, and one of my first purchases over there will be a new computer!

Thanks for the update, Bec, and have a safe but fun journey. I loved working in Israel for a year. It gave me multiple opportunities to interact with people of so many different cultural backgrounds, and afforde me a chance to learn about life 'outside' the safe socio-political shell of California. Good luck, and keep us posted!  Email me anytime, I'd love to get some feedback on this from someone actually experiencing this job.
