I just wanted to put the word out to anybody at piptalk who might have a livejournal account, and be interested in participating in a community that a friend and I have started, called "New Formalism."  It's based on the revival of classical verse forms, and their incorporation into contemporary poetry.  This is important today, because of how ascendant free-verse has become---we're a community of people who would like to learn about and use older, formal elements in our poetry, to try and preserve the beauty of the past.

Well, enough plug.  I know quite a few piptalk members who are interested in formal verse, and I'd like to invite anyone who's interested to come and check it out.

Thanks!

Brian

I think it's great, Brian. I'm still a little unclear as to the purpose. Is it a site to critique one's work also? I read the sonnet the link leads to and didn't see any critiques or constructive criticisms or pointers by the readers, nor actually much reference to the poem at all. Is it then more of a conversational forum for people to talk about forms and structures?

I think it's an excellent idea. As adament about structures as I am, I agree with the concept 100%!

'Deer-

It's meant to be constructive.  The sonnet at the top of the page likely had no comments yet because of how new it was.  here and here are a couple examples of the kind of criticism already going on, hopefully as the community grows (it's just starting out) people will be more assertive with their critiques.

Brian, this is really neat that you have done this. I'm sure that you will have a lot of poets join who are able to write this way. It's really a good idea, Brian.
