http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.novarg.a@mm.html

Symantec has released information on W32.Novarg.A@mm.  I know some of you have it because you keep trying to send it to me.  [And if I'm sending it to you, oops, sorry, and I'm currently trying to repair my own computer.]

If you follow the above link, you will be able to download a repair.

Thanks all.

[Whew!  My machine doesn't have bugs.]

The MyDoom virus, like most in the past few years, has the ability spoof the "From" address when it sends itself across the wires. Ergo, without some serious IP investigation, there's really no way to know who sent you the virus-contaminated email. Indeed, you can almost bet it did NOT come from the person in the From line. Everyone else is still suspect.

The good news about MyDoom is that it will self-destruct on Feb 12, automatically disabling itself. I guess that's a bit like knowing that the big bruiser beating you over the head will eventually get tired and stop?

Wicked little critter.     Glad I didn't put up the names of those from whom it SAID it was coming!

Okay, thanks, Karilea, but is there another place that I can go to scan my system? I didn't understand a thing at this one, and nothing happened when I clicked on the tool link?

I do have McAfee but haven't updated in quite awhile due to the cost. Does anyone know if there is a free way to scan and clean out this worm in case I have it?

Both trendmicro and symantec have free online scanners. I personally prefer trendmicro, the makers of PC-cillan.

Do you have a link for it Ali and do you think I will be able to understand the instructions? I'm not what you would call a 'systems tech'!

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ for trendmicro and http://securityresponse.symantec.com/ for symantec's. With symantec, head to the bottom of the page, where you will see Virus Definitions. There's a link there for the free online scan. To the right of Virus Definitions is a section for removal tools.

Hope those help.

My sister/Nightshade has it..the virus or a worm...she isn't sure.
Could also be her hard drive.
But, says to let you all know she will be off for a bit
until it's repaired or her computer replaced.
he called to let me know this afternoon and wanted me to pass the info on to you all so you wouldn't think she has gone missing.

How can I find out if I have this virus? I have the Norton Antivirus on my computer. I don't know much about these things.

Sue, I have the Norton Antivirus, too. If you have the "LiveUpdate" fixed to check in with Symantec, it will keep your program updated. Then you need to schedule the program to scan your computer regularly. Mine scans on Friday mornings early AM. Then when I hear of a bug or virus, I scan it again. I did in the early morning today.
