As noted in another thread, this is a letter I received in an e-mail. Of course, they are offering a book to buy with my poem in it.  LOL

So, ya'll be on the lookout for it. Okay?

Hi!

I saw you poem "Grinning Like A Little Smilie" on /pip/Forum83/HTML/002023.html and I thought it to be wonderful. I was wondering if I could use this poem in a book I'm currently publishing for a girl that I'm dating. I unfortuantly can't pay you any royalties and since I use a print-on-demand publisher where I have to pay for my own copy of the book, I can't even give you a free copy. I'm only doing this for the girl I'm dating, but the book will be available to buy via cafepress if your interested. The book will also get an ISBN# since it's free to get one here in Sweden, but it will only be sold on the internetsite and the only people who will know about it are probably the poemauthors and their friends and family. The book will cost about $15-$20 and will be a perfectly bound book.

You will of course keep the copright of your poem, you will only give me the
right to publish it in this book.

If your interested please let me know what you want to be the title of the poem
and what you want to use as alias/name on the poem.

Sorry about my english, it's not my best language.

Best regards Marcus Johansson

Ethel, I asked in your Q&A post, but will repeat here. At the bottom of the email, you should find the Username of the sender. Would you forward it to me, please?

Oh my goodness, Sue.

I sent the username to Ron, so he will get it stopped, I'm sure.

One more thing! When I saw the email, my question was, how did he get my email address?

Easy. They trawl through email addresses at netpoets, if you're posted there, and through the email function here.

He didn't get your email address, Sue. Not unless you actually responded to him.

Our server sent the email, not him. He registered, and as a Member was able to use the email forms to send the spam. Never made a post at all. Nor will he now.

Sue, people can click on the little icon at the top of any of our post and send us an e-mail. But, they can't get our e-mail address unless we send an e-mail back to them. So, the person didn't actually know our e-mail, from what I understand.

I didn't respond to his email. I just ignored it. It sounded strange to me.

Yeah, me too. I asked Karilea about mine and never did respond to it either, so he doesn't have our e-mail address now.

Okay...at the risk of upsetting some of you...I'm going to jump into this thread.

::gulp::

I got the same e-mail...but, instead of being offended or thinking it was a scam, I responded. I had a nice long talk with Marcus and feel, especially after we chatted via a few messages, that this is just a guy who is trying to put a romantic book of poetry together for his girlfriend.

I know that I'm a very trusting individual...and, maybe that makes me a target. But...I sincerely don't think so. Marcus did NOT try to sell me a book. He simply told me that once it was published he would send me the info. I can choose to purchase it or not.

And...now...for the REALLY dicey bit. But...this is a VALID question on my part. What is so different from this guy publishing a book with my poem in it and from the new book that Ron has just published with all your poems in it? Ron...did you give the books away to anyone who submitted? I'm not trying to be "smart" here or cause any trouble. I just sincerely do not see the difference between the two scenarios except that you "own" this website. Please help me to understand if my logic is awry in this instance. I truly want to learn.

Thank you for "listening" to me. I sincerely hope that everyone understands what I'm asking and gives me some concrete answers (besides...I'm truly a "conflict wuss"!!! It took me all day today to get up enough courage to post this and right now, my stomach's in knots!).

Love and Light...jc

I never had a problem with Marcus's offer, nor questioned his motivations. I do, however, have a very serious problem with cut and paste Spam, especially from someone who never made a single post in the forums after registering (not even on the several hundred poems he "selected" for his book). I'm glad to hear he's a nice guy, I'm glad to hear he was sincere, but his choice in methods lumps poetry in the same bucket as Viagra and penis enlargements.

Spam is evil.

LOL. You're not upsetting anyone at all, and your questions were valid ones to ask. I was just trying to answer as best I could why his posting privileges were immediately revoked. People here, and I think everywhere on the Internet, need to feel comfortable knowing their privacy will be respected.
