May I ask for your assistance and submissions?

Prairie Inkwells, a poetry group with which I am affiliated, has been approached by Access Kansas, a local television station, to appear for a five minute “Mic Moment” during their “Celebration of the First Amendment” on Saturday, May 31, 2003.  My co-founder has said, “you’ll be speaking for us,” so I have signed us up for a booth and a five-minute speaking engagement in front of the “open Mic”.

Now, here is what I would like to do, with YOUR assistance.  First, I have a slightly selfish request.  I will be taking submissions from you as to what poem of mine might be a fair and proper poem to read at this “Celebration of the First Amendment”.  I will announce the poem and the poet who picked it, here in Passions.

Secondly, Bridget Shenachie, my poetry and Passions partner, and I will pick one, two, or three OTHER poems submitted by YOU to read as a member of Passions in Poetry.  I will do what I can to include YOUR poetry into a citywide televised event!   No, there will be no outlay of funds, from either side; there are no sales of any kind at this time; but it IS a push to put poetry to the forefront of the American populace once again.  If you are interested in my sharing your poetry, then please, place the link to your poem previously placed in Passions onto this post.  Bridget and I will go through them, and I will advise every one of the choices that I will read at the “Celebration of the First Amendment.”

Submissions will be taken until May 15.  Thank you for your assistance!

~*~
AMENDMENT I
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion,
or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;
or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press;
or the right of the people peaceably to assemble,
and to petition the government for
a redress of grievances.

Here is a tanka that I wrote that you may use if you so choose, for your amendment event.

This may be a bit lengthy nevertheless I feel this is probably the crown jewel in my collection of poetry that encourages the securing of free-speech and the celebration of the living word!

I am going to look through your vast collection of poems and take my time so i can see to it I find the one that I feel best conveys the free spirit!

God Bless You and thank you for all the wonderful work you're doing! We all so deeply appreciate it! (angel hugs)

It's not the same without the graphic to show that the poem is about a Native American woman though...

Noah, you're correct - that may be a bit lengthy - so feel free to submit any of your shorter poems for consideration.  I only have five minutes!!

PdV, that's a wonderful selection, and there's nothing keeping me from mentioning the fact that this is about a Native American Woman!  Thank you!

Whoopsadaisy! EA feels pretty dum dum! I put the wrong URL down! You must have thought that I was crackers submitting a love poem!

Here is the senryu that I meant to submit. It isn't about amendments or such, but it is about patriotism...
/pip/Forum74/HTML/001812.html

I think that I might submit several URLs of poems of mine that didn't do very well so that you can bump them up when you make your gracious replies!

This is a good time to clarify that as it relates to "Freedom of Speech" it doesn't necessarily have to do with the First Amendment.  They are using this day to be able to speak in the form of poetry, or other artistic ways.  So, Linda, your "love" poem would've/could've worked...

and submit all you want.  I have my partner beside me to help me sort them out and take samplings from here and there.  Let's give Bridget something to do, eh?

I do not understand why the poem does not appear! I posted it on 04-24-2003 at 11:14 am

Here it is:

Freedom
Offers us the
Opportunity to
Live and believe as we so choose.
Lives have been lost so that this may be so.
Be thankful for such a blessing.
Speak for those without voice
That they might have
Freedom

Hello folks!  Putting together a brochure for the Celebration - your poems will be included - those that are picked [fairly short] and can be read during this whole five minute span...

some thoughts are coming to me....

I'll be fitting into this brochure some of your poems, [perhaps some artwork] and I'm giving you heads up that I will be notifying those whose poems are chosen, that I will be asking you to sign off with your full name, permitting me use of your own copyrighted poetry; I will also be asking to name your state or country of residence [so they can see PiP's overall audience - as we will be handing these brochures out to those who are interested] AND...

you will be getting a glimpse of the brochure in about 10 days, to say "yea" or "nay" as to being part of this exciting event...

Again, thank you for your participation; I've been getting some wonderful input from folks, and I'm excited to be doing this not only for Prairie Inkwells, but PiP as well!

Sometimes

Karilea,

My friend, I am the one who is honored by your request. I will search your posts to today.

I would like to work on a poem regarding freedom speech.  I was just discussing this very topic with a an extremely intelligent student at the high school where I substitute teach. I wanted to get her opinion, while keeping my opinions on the topic to myself. But how do we teach young minds to critically think if they cannot ask and discuss openly some of the appropriate questions of our time?  As a teacher, you must be on your guard to steer them away from such topics because you don't know when boundaries will overstepped. So, you avoid so much.

Congratulations to you, Karilea.  I will get back to you on this, hopefully today and no later than tomorrow evening.

That last poem, "Through the Classroom Door" is for you...for this.  I think we so infringe on the Christians' right to freedom of speech in the classroom.  I have seen this first hand.  One incident stands out it my mind.  I had a senior class of honor students who wanted to debate the existence of God.  Why couldn't they?  I spent the entire weekend pondering this question.  The poem was not exactly from experience, for I teach only at the high school level, but in a sense it was from that day...the day we couldn't speak or think at an institution of learning.

Anyway, I hope you understand this submission.  But I owe you a big thanks for making me think about this again and express it in poetry.  I am not sure if I captured the essence of what you wanted here for your great honor.  For me, I thought it expressed my thoughts on freedom.

Hi Karilea, 't was nice talking to you the other day through messenger, LOL small world it is. Here's my submission, I edited a bit, think it's better this way.

Within yourself

When freedom's born in our soul
And democracy rests in our mind
Then, is there someone who can tell me
Why both are often so hard to find

If you don't like the title, think one up yourself, my mind is blanc at the moment, spend the whole day getting my computer to work properly, so I'm out of titles right now.

Does this “Celebration of the First Amendment” have a particular political/religious agenda attached to it?

Could you clarify exactly what the aim is?

Phaedrus, I do not believe there is any governmental, political or religious attachment to Salina Access TV's "Celebration of the First Amendment."  According to the person I spoke to, we are merely being asked to come and share our writings, art, poetry, prose, etc., and will have five minutes "mic" time for our public tv to film [over a two hour period] which will later be shown on our local TV station.

While many think that this has to be a resource for a political or religious theme, I am taking some short poems from those of you who wish to submit same, in hopes to get out the word that poetry is long from dead; everyone will be asked for their full name and city/town/country of residence.  I hope to give PiP a small boost, along with our own group, Prairie Inkwells, in order to encourage membership.

I believe their only "aim" is to share the talents of Salina to other Salinans who cannot get out to discover such for themselves.

If I learn of a change in their agenda that would somehow speak against our Freedom of Speech, you'll be the first to know.  I hope this answers your question.

Patricia, that is one of my favorite poems.  I'll make sure that it's put among the contenders.  Thank you for taking time on YOUR day to make this selection!

Let us always remember
that we, and only we, can
master our fates.
For we are the leaders
of our souls.
Then, and only then, will
our tomorrows bring
Interludes of Integrity?
To share briefly, is better
than not sharing at all.

I'm not sure if this is what your wanting but i posted it anyhow,
