In case anyone hasn't yet heard, Alaska had a 7.9 quake just after 1PM today. I just got off the phone with my sister, who has a small farm just outside of Fairbanks. Ther are major cracks in the Denali Hwy area just south of Fairbanks
(Mt McKinley), the main road between Fairbanks and Anchorage. The quake was about 75-80 miles south of Fairbanks. My sister and all her neighbors are OK. She reports that some friends as far away as Delta Junction AK (about 150 miles north of her)had some minor damage, but the worst of the damage seems to be along the main north/south highway. The AK pipeline was shut down within an hour, and crews are out checking the entire pipeline for cracks.
We do have a few poets on this board who live in AK, hope you guys are all OK! Hang in there!

It appears that everyone I know in AK made it through this one OK.

I haven't heard anything about this yet, Kacy, but I'm glad you were able to check on family and friends.  All I've heard in the news ALL day so far has been nothing but political push...

I'm glad all are well - I feel so insulated from this sort of earthly phenomena... Yet we have so many who live along the west coast fault... All present & accounted for is a good thing...

Kacy, I hadn't heard about this, either. I'm so glad that
everyone you know is okay, and pray that there were no
major injuries or lives lost. I hope the damages can
be repaired, too.

Thanks gang, for reading. Politics has a way of pushing 'real news' out of our view.
I'll be glad when this election is history.
AK will have much to do, especially now that the ground has already re-frozen. winter is not the ideal time for major road repairs, not to mention broken plumbing, heating systems etc. I'm trying to find out if the house I just left (outside of Fairbanks) is still standing, as my former  neighbors took over the lease after I left there. A 5+ quake shook it really hard a year ago, and it is on stilts, in permafrost soils that freeze solid about mid-October.

(big hugggsssssss) Oh Kacy, I did hear this on National Public Radio, and anything over 7 on the seismograph is considered a major earthquake. Itoo don't get how this has been left asidein the news and instead we have to save on Wayne Allard/Tom Strickland political ads! LOL! You wouldn't believe one I heard from Allard's campaign the other day, where they said "Tom is evilness!" There is no such word as evilness! LOL!

Hope your sister is alright up there!

I thought of you when I heard the news of the earthquake...and was glad that you had moved.  My sister in law has a daughter and son who live there...not sure exactly where.  I'm glad all of your loved ones are okay.

Noah, I am really sick of the political agendas that are forced on us daily. BLEH!
As for my sis, LOL, she ws so busy moving a pregnant pig at the time, she barely had time to 'register' that quake. Life has a way of moving forward at its own pace.

Martie, hope they are OK. The latest reports are there is major road damage, but no casualties. I will hold onto that report, and hope it is 100% truthful.

Lauren, yes, it was a good sized quake, but not the biggest ever. I think the 1964 quake was 9.2 and caused considerable damage.

Kacy,
Quakes are very unnerving. I'm glad that all your family and friends seem to be okay. Let's hope things stay quiet for a long time. I remember the '64 quake too.
