We've had some strange DNS problems on Artemis (this server) for over a month now, with some web sites being intermittently unreachable. As happens with most computer problems, this one seems to be getting progressively worse. I've spent all morning investigating and, while I'm not certain of the relationship, I've discovered the server is experiencing some potentially serious read/write errors with the SCSI hard disk.

If it becomes necessary to replace the hard disk, the forums will likely be down for a day or two. If the problem escalates too quickly, we could end up losing data (if there are poems you don't have locally, now would be a good time to get copies from the Archives!).

I have placed a ticket with the people who maintain our hardware and will update this post when I know more. If we suddenly "go away," rest assured the problem is being handled and we'll be back as soon as possible.

I lied. I'm updating the post even thought I still don't know more.

I backed up all of our data during the five hours we've been down, but still haven't heard from the hardware people in Florida. The only way to fully test a Linux file system is to boot the server from a floppy, and I haven't quite figured out how to do that over the phone, so I'm pretty much at their mercy. All we can do is wait. I'm putting the forums back on-line, but it could be necessary to shut them down again with only a moment's notice. Y'all be careful!

(big hugggssssss) Oh Ron, thank you so much for letting us know what's going on, I was nervous about what was happening and finally got some relief hearing at least the situation. Let's pray for the best and that whatever is going on in Artemis won't eat away at the memory or the data!

(sigh) Let's all rest assured these complications will pass and quickly the forums will be back up to their full normal operating frequency!

Going to Archives now for emergency copying of poems!

Love,
Noah Eaton

Thanks Ron. Tell them to put on their kid gloves and handle her tenderly.

Hon, I sure wish I could help you, but I don't even understand what you're talking about.

So, I'm sending along good thoughts to help get you through this. I brew a mean cup of tea if you're in need of a little caffeine.

Good luck, Marti

Ron~
Thanks for keeping us on alert~

Personally I'm still having the problem, I mentioned to you in my
e-mail yesterday afternoon, of not being able to reach my FTP or netpoet sites ... (intermittent connectivity ... mostly no connectivity and all graphics stored on that site are not visible to me in anyone's posts, including my own ... any chance they could be related to the DNS problems you're experiencing here ?)

Good luck with Artemis~

Marge, the DNS ghost I was chasing wasn't related to the one described in your letter - it WAS the one described in your letter. Hey, everyone! It was all Marge's fault!

Unfortunately, as I said earlier, it's hard to tell if the disk errors are the cause of the DNS problems, or if my investigations just turned up a spark before it could become a raging fire. The forums have now been back on-line seven hours with nary a hiccup from the disk. That the good news. From my experience with computers, that's probably just because I have a recent backup. Disks never crash when you have a backup.

The bad news, of course, is that the DNS issues remain unresolved.

No, I think in this instance, a red flag is just right!
