The road is littered now yellow
As fierce digits of wind have stripped
The early color from the limbs
As they bend toward to center
A cover now
Of tangled grey

I think of Dorothy and Oz
So many stars past the autumn leaves
And wonder how her children have grown
And if she spends afternoons
Browsing through her books
To capture the bitter taste of
Words written sweetly on dreams
Or if she sips coffee as pause
To the routines of folding towels
Thinking of how it was
When a heart was needed to fill
His hollow form

I contemplate the shadow of clouds
Come and go
Come and go
As stiff boned wind carries them easterly
Towards the sea and shore
Admire the hues of wet slick road
And hope
She is warm

I am curious
as I am sure Dorothy is
as to why you posted this
here, unless you are calling
Dorothy in
for a chat.

Smiling at you.

Memphis Blues

She wears her age like a worn cuff
some stains won't be washed out by rain
and time passing only sets them deeper
till the fray of threads begin
and seams give way

Wish you could be here this weekend...
The Blue Heaven Studio is holding its
13th annual Blues Festival...

I'll think of this poem
this evening, for sure!

Sounds like a good time... I'm sure I would have enjoyed listening..

This is more a comment on the state of affairs in Memphis than it is about the Blues themselves. While I was there last week, one of the talk radio shows greeted its call in listeners with "Welcome to Memphis, glad you weren't shot last night."

a rather telling commentary on the violence that exists in gang and drug wars...

I was warned repeatedly while there to be careful when I went out, or when I drove to the cross dock I was visiting. Sad......

She built her curves along the beltway
as she moved further from the bed of muddy
towards the trees and fields
but miasma followed the exodus
and looks thinner along the thighs
where the fever shows its ravages
bringing her to talk in her sleep
of better times
          of dreams
she had

(chuckling)  yes it is abstract....

a passing observation about Memphis while I was there... she built up along the interstates and grew curves from her former shape along the river... many cities seem to decay from within, but the decay seems to have followed her expansion. What struck me while there was that so many of the people I met and talked to seemed to simply be accepting of the condition, and had perhaps lost hope.....

She has many sides..most cities do.. the one I was exposed to on this trip the most was one less optimistic than the ones I have seen of her in the past.

Mary mother of god
Memphis mentioned you to me
And told me you stayed at St Anne’s
Down on Coker street
Just next to that big house they built
Before Shiloh was another bloody name

Later she murmured muddy soft whispers
And I tracked then into the braid of water
She used to cover her hips
But she just smiled pearly hellos
And shrugged off my eyes
As she donned her dirt stained jeans
Then asked me to let you know Martin doesn't live here
But guessed
You already knew

Memphis 2

She smiled
And the gap between her street lights
Accented how pearled wisdoms
Cost money to fix
Even if her brothers didn't make sport
When driving by shooting at the moon

Hungry
She fed me rich fat pork on paper
Telling me the expense of subtle verbs
Was higher than adding vinegar
Even if this was a dry county
And getting caught meant
JoeDan would be enjoying more dark meat
Free of charge
She sighed saying in one of her muddy whispers
That she still wore the sore from last time
But she hoped that witch with her twisted currents
didn't get her way this year

I left her dancing curves on tables
While shouting Tuesday was amateur night
And had a 200 dollar prize
If the tourist and players agreed
On who would look best nude
So I didn't see her skin

oh~ don't let my darker writes disssuade you from going if you get the chance. Memphis can be a wonderful place. Great food, great music, and a lot of friendly people...
my last trip took me to a rougher part of town, and like all places she has her problems with unemployment and the economy, but she is a grand city along the river...

Oh, I`m all for an honest portrayal... that`s what we do, as writers/observers; life is both the seamy and sublime. If I`m ever in that neck of the woods, you can be sure I`d not miss Memphis!     I`m ashamed to say I`ve never been further south than Ohio  =(    Though I`ve seen a lot of the northern states, all across.  Someday... when these kiddos grow... lol!

Light streamed from her open doors
and the current of blue wafted on sidewalks
carrying the crowds towards the river
past the clank of dishes and tinkling of glass
and the smells of slow smoke

welcome smiled well mannered
as invitations to sit and sample
brought southern slows to feet
and it was good to watch the mist
of all that had gone before
as you sipped a cold one
with BB in the background

Along River Park
she feeds the throngs
with gaity and her self deprecating humor
telling the world that nothing
is more important than the food
and the family
we are

(chuckling)
  hey! my ribs are touchy!!

write something huh?

Cornflower
faded this sky portends colder nights
and russet days in wait of snow
that might cover some pretense of faith
come Sunday with its hymns

What little green remains now wilts
for frost jeweled the hills this morning
with faceted reflections of early sun
finding blues to rouge the eye
into believing it was beauty
to be cold

This north wind claims comfort
as hours wash away the greys
and cornflower reigns in milky undertones
hushing nights wish
for spring
