Hello folks,

I've joined your forums with a specific goal in mind.  To learn all I can about poetry, prose, and writing.  Your site seems to contain a vast resource of knowledge and interesting people.

I am not a poet, however, several of my relatives are.  I'd like to be able to identify a quality piece of work and complement them on it properly.  For now, I'll smile and say 'that's nice' if it rhymes, the same response is produced if it doesn't rhyme, except with a puzzled look in my eyes.

My passion is taking the written word and translating it into a drawing or painting.  One of my art classes decades ago, combined a semester with the poetry class.  The dismayed teacher wanted to fail me for my poetry. I passed the class with my art work only.

I thank you for this opportunity and hope to learn something about poetry.

Thanks for the welcome, I'm looking forward to getting to know you all too.

Ok, my first question,

What's the difference between free form poetry and a prose?

Hi and welcome. Your first question is tricky but as a guideline...prose is writing in the form of a short story or essay. With this form you must have proper paragraphing as well as structure to your writing. Free form poetry needs no form and can be what ever the poet wants to make it. eg.,Creating a
                            picture
                             with
                               w
                                o
                               r
                                d
                                s

Free Form poetry gives you the freedom to do as much or as little as you like. For a beginner this is the best style to begin with. You can't be wrong...lol.

To add on to Marilyn's explanation,
some of the best free form poetry on these
boards come from the likes of serenity,
Martie, and several of the others. Use of
metaphor is more intense in free form poetry
than normally used in prose; as Marilyn said,
prose follows along the lines of a short
story. In free form poetry, the words "and, but,
then, for, [etc.]" are almost non-existant. A
collection of abstract thoughts
is another term I've heard used for free
form poetry.

Enjoy!

Thank you for your explanations.

Let's see if I understand them properly. A short story/essay can be called as a prose, where the free form poem would be a descriptive idea without the restrictions of language edicate?
