This has been making the e mails rounds again, and this time I'm out of the fog enough to wanna know--

HOW DOES IT WORK?

1. Grab a calculator. (you won't be able to do this one in your  head)
2. Key in the first three digits of your phone number (NOT the Area code)
3. Multiply by 80
4. Add 1
5. Multiply by 250
6. Add the last 4 digits of your phone number
7. Add the last 4 digits of your phone number again.
8. Subtract 250
9. Divide number by 2

And I don't mind feeling dumb. As I've said, there's three kinds of people in the world--them that can do math and them that can't. *groan*

sigh

a kid just explained to me that this has very little to do with math, but more with mind trickery. He pointed out that the phone number equation was given in the process, and merely reduced, in the steps that followed.

It sounded better the way he said it.

I feel so dumb.

Try it and see for yourself.

It is simply a clever manipulation of adding several steps to obfuscate the simple operation of multiplying the first 3 digits by 10000 the adding the last 4. Break it down into pieces and this becomes obvious. But then, if you can't "do math," you may never get there

well im pretty smart in math (so i like to think haha), and i did this on  a calculator and just got a random number. so i did it again and did the same thing. so i wasnt sure if there was supposed to be some trick to it, or some special code/pattern you're supposed to find or what.

I had this explained to me by someone I sent it to that is so darn smart, that I said to myself, "Wow is he ever darn smart!"   and then I said, "Either that, or I am darn stupid."   I am sure if he sees this he may tell you the secret if you don't already know your own phone number.

What.....phone book or phone bill?  Irrespective they both take some degree of literacy and possibly sleuthing if you don't know where that nefarious piece of sanctified paper was last placed.
