Without giving away the ending, or the plot, what did you think of the film? Did you see any errors that you caught? I saw one tiny slip up left screen in the backyard with the wind blowing toward the storm, (some of the debris was not blowing the right way)  but I tend to watch for those things. I sure felt "Speilburged" I tell ya! I personally think it is a 5-star flick.The little girl in that movie was incredible. A simple star-rating works great. We could get a film review of movies going in here, would be useful so we don't waste our money going to 1 star rated shows anymore. So, what movie do you recommend going to see? |

 5 stars may be a little extreme, considering it would rank this film along the likes of classics "The Wizard of Oz" and "It's A Wonderful Life", etc, and also that this isn't necessarily among Spielberg's best pictures ("E.T", "Raiders of the Lost Ark", "Schindler's List", "Saving Private Ryan") But it is a great film, and one of Spielberg's better films in recent years (and he has an amazing track record). Definitely a breath of fresh air that well makes up for the recent disappointments of "A.I" and "The Terminal". Spielberg obviously has that vintage spirit in him, and he has done an excellent job here living up to the original here. It's his best since "Catch Me If You Can". 4 out of 5 Stars! Haven't seen it yet, but the girl is Dakota Fanning. She's quite the actress. My favorite of hers so far is the Mini-Series "Taken" (another Spielburg flick if I'm not mistaken). She was also great in "Man on Fire" and "I am Sam." I'm looking forward to War of the Worlds. |

I took both my daughter and nephew to see War of the Worlds yesterday... I enjoyed the movie, as did they, but I wouldn't call it a classic or even give it a 5 star rating for a few reasons. POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD ~ DON'T READ IF YOU PLAN ON SEEING THE MOVIE! 1. The entire city's car population died through EMP - stopped dead in their tracks, there were masses of people fleeing in panic, yet Tom was the only one able to retreive a running vehicle and he and his family were able to pretty much easily drive through all the "dead" vehicles and masses of peope. 2. How in the world did his son not only make it Beantown before Tom and his daughter, but even to survive after he left his father to go to the front lines of the military action? All of those military personnel on the front line during that scene were completely anialated. An explanation is needed. 3. And finally, the ending... too abrupt and without any warning or clues as to how the aliens were going to be defeated. I prefer the Mars Attacks! ending, where Slim Whitman's yodeling - discovered by a grandmother - does the Martian's in... but to at the very end, add the narration of how and why the Martians were dying, to me, just seemed to rob something from the picture. I give the movie an overall grade of 3 of 5 stars. |

In answer to the first question...if you remember Tom stopped in at the garage, and told the mechanic what part to put into that car to get it up and running. It has been "in the shop" so was not running at the time the aliens stopped traffic dead in its tracks. He then rushed to that garage and took that vehicle to make his escape. (well from what I remember.) See, I was paying attention at least. I do agree about it not being an actual 5-star show, that was used too loosely, but it is good that is for sure. I saw "Charlie And The Chocolate Factory" and "The Wedding Crashers" and recommend them both as good flicks. The little boy in Charlie is awesome! |

I understand, Sharon, but to tell me that no other car could be fixed about the same time and that the car Tom drove was the only car available... not to mention since all of the other thousands upon thousands of cars were dead on the road and that there was a swarm of people on the roads, that Tom and company could drive through all of that? Too unbelievable for me... and not to even mention after the plane crashed, there happened to be a direct route (road) from the home back to the main road? This is what I call a script problem in logic and it takes away from a movie... I still enjoyed it! |

What about the guy who was able to use a video camera to tape the tripod erupting, while all other electronics were out of commision? I also agree with the criticisms about the son and the ending, but for the most part I did think it was a pretty good movie, definitely entertaining and suspenseful. |

Warning, do not read this if you haven't yet seen the movie... OK... WULL I loved the movie, and would rate it a five star, not on story perhaps (which by the way, I was so engrossed with the special effects, that the story content didn't matter)Man oh man, to me it was an edge of your seater, I was literally shaking, and since I know the story, from beginning to end quit well, thought it might be the air conditioning, but it wasn't, never finished my pop corn. Ya know, what I liked best about it...was the way they had those old aliens stashed under ground for God only knows how many thousands of years...and that snake like part slithering through all the homes...yuck...basically the story melded for me, and ending it abruptly, hey, I loved that, virus got the bad guys just like the original movie...oh, and the way those things stored people underneath them,...loved how they broke away...and I was happy to see the brother get home, and didn't care how, not to mention...the storms, blowing all which ways...Nope, in this movie, I wasn't a pay attention to detail girl, this one sucked me in and spit me out. Hehe loved it...maybe it was my mood? and dakota was tremendous...as she always is, what an great little actress... I enjoyed the movie so much, I'm going back with my cousin...and...actually, didn't expect nearly as much... Thanks Sharon, for the opportunity to place my thumbs up for Mr. Director and special effects artist. hey did ya see, King Kong is in the near future...what's this, the 3rd making...can you imagine how the special effects in this one will have improved...? Can't wait? and oh, by the way, rented Million Dollar Baby and hated the movie...??? The brutality in the truth behind the movie...I cannot believe that society, allowed that to happen...but then, this is another thread. |

Didn't see War of the Worlds.. never want to. Cruise pisses me off too much. Ah, where are the days when actors act and leave mental health to the doctors? I think he's teh one that needs a shrink :P Million Dollar Baby.. I loved it. Just because it's a harsh, sad movie doesn't make it BAD.. I have a handicapped cousin who leads a church, has a business, and has two young sons! So.. it goes both ways.. but defiently one of the best this year. Love's a lovely lad |

I also thought that Million Dollar Baby was one of the best flicks I had seen in a long, long time. I went to see Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, and it's another "Shrek-like" adult/child entertainment piece, that makes you leave the theatre in a panic to find a chocolate Freddie Highmore is an incredible little actor in this show too. I am afraid I was a little disappointed in this one, and preferred the original better. I was "creeped out" by Johnny Depp to be honest, LOL. Hey LoveBug, Good Morning...regarding Million Dollar Baby....didn't say it was a BAD movie...what I said was I hated it...as I could never understand why people drewl over such violence...meaning, it was a true story, and that gal fighter who was so brutal should have been banned from the ring...the damage she caused by crippling and taking another life, and thats what she did...she took another life and destroyed it...and people cheered her on...that concept to me, is unacceptable...the acting was good, but the story itself, to me, was tragic and made me very sad that people encourage and pay for brutality? But then, that's me, who I am, and my opinion. I become personally and emotionally charged when people hurt others so brutally. And yes, it does go both ways, and I'm happy your cousin has been so successful...but there are those who are not...due to neglegence, lack of responsibilty to others and just plain mean attitudes...causing others to suffer...I to have a family member who was severely handicapped...hit by a drunk driver...and died...and so perhaps, I took the movie way to personal...but then, maybe, we all should? Didn't see Willie, but hope to and now more so looking forward to it...making certain I take along some choc snacks...hehe A mind is like a home, furnished by its owner, so if one's life is cold and bare he can blame none but himself. I don't tend to personalize movies I guess because I see so many and enjoy them. At one time I worked in the business, so I suppose I look at them from a different angle. I love to see the mechanics of a movie rather than get involved in the emotions I guess. The premise of any sport for money causing harm to another is not something I have ever believed in, so I understand your point of view though. There are really only 4 movies I was left speechless (and that's hard for me to be.)- To Kill A Mockingbird - Citizen Kane - Shindler's List, and believe it or not, a very old sci-fi movie called, - Solient Green. I realize the special effects are way better now but the idea behind that movie has stayed with me for years and years. Turn me into a cookie? Indeed! |

Look, I don't want this thread to change into another political firestorm here. I believe the film was merely meant for entertainment, and the political undertones that some may feel scratching beneath the surface of this film are nothing more relevant than those which some can rush conclusions to from the opening paragraph of the new Harry Potter book. But my final point is, I believe Koepp is right in that many wars historically have element-related intents, especially territorial. Even so, I absolutely believe it was not the intent of Spielberg to compare the Martians to American servicemen and servicewomen. Oh, I don't think the undercurrents were Spielberg's, just the screenwriter's (David Koepp) viewpoints. Just one of those 'uh-huh, whatever' moments. |

Thanks for clarifying, Alicat! I was just saying is all, because the commentary you shared had Bridget Johnson believing that it was no coincidence that Spielberg allowed no reviews until the film's release to avoid that sort of press, as well as saying Spielberg was "nuanced" about the overtone questionings, thus she smells a rat in him as equal to Koepp. Again, I believe there's no big deal at all about the film's overtones; it was perfectly sound to me. I understand there's many who are always concerned about Hollywood and how it badly influences America, and I believe that particular editorial was no exception to that sort of question-raising. Hey LeeJ Yeah, I guess I can understand why that is upsetting, but I guess I just can't associate that with hating a movie? We live in a culture of violence, unfortunately.. But I think that Million Dollar Baby shows the nicer side to it too. She wanted that life so badly, she worked so hard for it, and even though that happened, she had no regrets. Love's a lovely lad |

I have to agree with you Lovebug, sometimes we have to be careful what we wish for don't we - as we get it and more than we bargained for. You are right about one thing, violence has become an every day thing that is for sure, and more and more movies depict that. |

Hi Sharon came back b/c I was thinking of you yesterday I bought the "Upside of Anger" candidly b/c I love Kevin Costner movies, and this, to me was done brilliantly...loved the message it sent, and though many would regard it as a chick flick, thought it to be utterly provocative and thought provoking... I really liked Million Dollar Baby, that is, until the last half hour or so when she was in the hospital/nursing home... anyone who is even remotely familiar with medical technology will see how flawed and unrealistic the movie is at that point? Three hours to get ready for the wheelchair? Yeah right. I work in a nursing home and I could have her ready in a half-hour, easy. And, uh, her having a conversation while her ventilator was breating for her through her tracheotomy? Needless to say, I was irked beyond belief and dissapointed that Clint didn't do better research on that end. |
