Meg sparked this because of her name,
but I really started to get into anime
now and just started watching
Cowboy Bebop and want to go get Helsing.
I am fascinated . . .
any thoughts you guys want to share?

It's all personal preference.  About the only Anime I like is actually Manga, that being 'Ghost in a Shell: Stand Alone Complex' found on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim.  I really dig Ghost since I played Cyberpunk for many years in the mid-90's, and that's what the show was based on.  That's about it.  Some of the other shows are interesting, but by and large I dislike Anime.  It's either pedophiliactic or market driven.  Or a combination.  You can rarely go anywhere without seeing some form of paper crack either based on an anime show, or the basis for an anime show.  And any anime which has teenage girls in school uniforms or sailor outfits is right out.  That stuff makes my skin crawl.

serious anime yes, that cutesy crap no way. ghost in the shell was brilliant but i haven't seen the sequel if you mean movies. akira, macross, ninja scroll are all great too. there are some manga comics i've been meaning to get into(god i l#ve bittorrent) but the only one i've really enjoyed thusfar is sword of the immortal but that may be american not sure.

There was either a sequel or add-on to Ghost in a Shell, called Ghost in a Shell: Innocence.  The current Ghost additions are shows aired on Adult Swim.  Akira was also pretty darn amazing, and like Ghost has a cult following.  The 'cutesy' stuff makes me gag, and the when artistic quality is even less than Hanna/Barbara, I strive not to break the remote.  Yeah, yeah, I know...Hanna/Barbara was the standard of the day, but that don't make it any better in my small book with large pictures.

Fact is, as soon as I can afford it, I'll be getting the Ghost dvd collections: original, add-on, and shows.

yup, wanted to see the sequel but will wait until the dvd is released. absolutely agree on the quality of animation(although i l#ved voltron I & II as a kid lol). i'm the same with comic book art, if isn't up to certain standares i have trouble making it through the story no matter how well written. i recently saw the star wars:clone wars series but just couldn't get into it because of it's simplistic animation.

i wish north americans would view animation as a serious medium and produce some adult animation.

p.s. add princess mononoke to my list

Princess Mononoke was awesome.

Other than that, the extent of my anime experience is Akira.

I used to be really obsessed with anime. I even used to have the action figures from various shows I loved. Hellsing is one of my favorites, too. Most of the animes you see on television were originally mangas (comic books you read backwards).. I would suggest Trigun, Akira, Bastard!!(an anime satire), Berserk, Big O, Blood Reign, Blue Seed, Cowboy Bebop(one of my favorites, of course), Lodoss War, Doomed Megalopolis, Excel Saga, Escaflowne, Evangelion, Inu-Yasha, Metropolis, Perfect Blue(awesome), Rurouni Kenshin(my most favorite of all time, ever)...

There's a LOT more....just so you know...

OMG, you guys are awesome . . . I have to write all this down, can I rent this stuff?
I didn't see anything like this anywhere except for Bebop and Hellsing . . .

Probably Amazon, right?

Ok, so the kind of anime I adore is whatever kind Quentin had in Kill Bill 1 . . . that kind of anime but I also like Bebop because it is funny and just messed UP . . . but again, I am new at this and will check out all I can.

So what makes up for cheesy anime?

I had no idea I would get such a response, thanks guys.   I want to try and draw some of this stuff . . . that is what sparked me, the art . . . then I started watching it . . . saw Bebop a long time ago on Cartoon Network but never got into it.

And now, I am afraid, I will be addicted.  Plus, I want to get comics for Billy now.
(ha . . . an excuse for my obsession)

yeah you can rent them or buy them, look for specialty stores that cater to the anime crowd, every city has em.

the cartooney stuff is that huge eyed mouth agape look..hard to describe, i'll find a pic. it annoys the crap out of me when it's done in the middle of an otherwise interesting cartoon

as for comics well, if we're talking north american comics well that's my world

Ones I'm jonesing for right now, quite aside from Ghost in a Shell: Stand Alone Complex are Samarai Champoo and Metropolis (one of the co-creators did Akira, which was the very first 'anime' I saw, and by which I judged all others).  And then there was Heavy Metal, yet even that one paled compared to Akira...the graphics seemed crude and amateurish, kinda like the end of the Hobbit when the animation crew was running short on money.

*grin* Got a job interview on Friday, so odds are, if'n I get it, I'll be able to get my Ghost fix after bills get balanced and the other car gets fixed.  Then I'll be one happy camper.  And then...then I can do my expensive hobby of building custom computers for fun and...well, fun.

Ali it is an expensive fix. that's why i download torrents and buy what I really like later. if you're interested i'll send you a few links

heavy metal has always been a favourite. my favourite scene, of course, was the white haired goddess(forgot her name)not for the nude scene(ok it helped) but it was probably the best drawn piece of the film.

Damn, remember watching Heavy Metal when I was like 8 . . . gotta find that too.

and I need to check out ghost & akira.

Raph,
Oh that kind of anime, gotcha . . .
I didn't think that was anime,
I thought it was cartoons, LOL.

(Ok, vomit the comics links, buddy.)

YES! Christopher, Kill Bill anime
(what/who was that?) totally blew me away.

Thanks again, guys . . . like I said I am just getting into this stuff.
(I tend to like the violent stuff, sheesh)

Ali?  PC's huh?  Very cool, I am an IT Tech.

Has anyone here seen "Nausica: Of The Valley Of The Wind"?

It's probably by far my favorite anime movie yet. Ooohhhhhh...and I love "Cowboy Bebop" and "Ghost In The Shell" too.
