Indeed Hollywood and the world has offered us many great comedy classics that keep us laughing, from the cross-dressing fiasco of "Some Like It Hot" to the monster success of "There's Something About Mary".

But not all classics have the all-star casts or big production budgets that often exercise the interest of movie-goers everywhere. Some just "become" classics naturally.

I thought in honor of our favorite cult comedy classics, I would start off with the newest inductee that was released last year on a $400,000 production budget but went on to prove box-office longevity and become an even bigger DVD smash, "Napoleon Dynamite"

Jon Heder plays Napoleon Dynamite, a lanky and maladroit, yet charming and colorful Idaho teenager, who lives in his grandmother's house along with his 32-year old brother Kip. With his messy red fro, thick spectacles, moon boots, his notable lack of smile and some skills in his pockets, he goes on a series of little adventures, from trying to impress a chick to go to the school dance to learning some hot dance moves to help his Hispanic friend Pedro win the student body presidency election.

Meanwhile, Napoleon faces obstacles of his own. When her grandmother has an accident at the sand dunes when leaping off one on her quad runner, Uncle Rico comes to watch over Napoleon and Kip while she's recuperating, whose shady business scams and yearning to go back in time to 1982 when he was the backup-quarterback to win state for Preston, Idaho and become the professional football player he's desired to be many years, provides a meddling character that challenges Napoleon throughout the film.

The delivery of one-liners and the noticeable intentional oddities that define cult classics makes the movie especially entertaining.

When Napoleon goes up to greet Deb in the cafeteria during lunch, noticing she's drinking from a 1% milk carton, he says, "I see you're drinking 1%, is that cuz you think you're fat. Cuz you're not, you could be drinking whole if you wanted to!"

In another scene, where Napoleon is in the locker room and talking to others about his summer experiences, when asking what he did, Napoleon says in a haughty tone, "I told you, I spent it with my uncle in Alaska hunting wolverines.". Then, when asked, "How many did you kill?" in the same tone, Napoleon replies, "About fifty of them. They were attacking my cousins, what the heck would you do in a situation like that?". Then when asked what type of gun he used, he says, "A freakin' 12-gauge, what do you think?" LOL!

But the school dance scene and the suprise wedding scene at the very end of the movie following the credits are the two most memorable scenes of all, where Kip and his chat room lover La Fawnduh get married and Kip sings a karaoke version of "Always & Forever" to her with his own lyrics like, "But I still love technology!" (giggles)

And there's a number of other interesting things to note out about this film:

* Jon Gries (Uncle Rico), who eats steak all throughout the film, never swallows any of it and actually spits it out after each cut.

* The scene where Kip demonstrates the durability of the bowls he and Uncle Rico are selling by driving Uncle Rico's van backwards over it and it breaks, was never supposed to happen. In the original script, it was never supposed to break, but the breaking it and driving away thing struck director Jared Hess as hilarious so the kept it.

* When Napoleon asks Pedro how he's going to ask the stuck-up Summer to the school dance and Pedro responds, "Build her a cake or something!", according to Jon Heder it is actually known to be a tradition in areas of Utah and beyond that to win a girl's heart, baking a cake is a way to do so.

* The dance moves Napoleon demonstrates are a mix of Backstreet Boys, Michael Jackson and Saturday Night fever moves put together, with a little of Jon Heder's own improvising.

* Jon Heder actually drew all the drawings for "Napoleon Dynamite", including the Liger.

* "Napoleon Dynamite" was based off of another Jon Heder original, a short-film titled "Peluca" with many notable similiarities to the film.

* "Napoleon Dynamite" made a domestic box-office profit over 100X its production budget of $400,000.

************************************

Share your thoughts on "Napoleon Dynamite", as well as many other cult comedy classics.

Noah Eaton

i thought it was self-serving and, well, quite boring. i didn't make it past the first twenty minutes.

each to their own, however. i support "bad" movies fully.

my fave: the Evil Dead Trilogy. Bruce Campbell is the King! Hail to the king, baby!

It's flippin' sweet.

I saw it at the Avalon in Portland and then ordered it so I could watch it again and again. Admittedly it's extremely slow, dorky, and plotless. But it's fun, funny, and clean. Full of great one-liners, and if you can get past the slow pace then it'll have you rolling on the floor in laughter. For new year's eve my church youth group even threw a "Flippin' Sweet Napolean Dynamite Party." It was great. We had liger drawing competitions, a dance contest, milk tasting contests, and we brought out tricycles and some fake steak and had a throwing contest, along with many other things...

Yeah, it's dang sweet!
Pretty much the best movie ever.
Vote for Pedro!

Eldest here loves Dynamite for those same reasons, GG.  Me, well, I'm old school.  Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles, Raising Arizona, and the penultimate: Blues Brothers.

I saw it and well, it was certainly strange, although I adore strange movies.
Was hard for me to watch it all the way through and I didn't rent it, but it was lent to me.

The best part was when his Mexican friend's cousins pick him up for the prom.

Thats about it and Oh, his uncle's time travel machine he bought off the internet.

I, too, love the old comedies, the greats, the SNL cast and SCTV. The old stand-ups and comedy clubs.

Better Off Dead rocked! Gross Pointe has a place of honor on my shelves.

I will say, though, that I'm not sure you can define the bulk of Cusack's movies as "Cult Classics" as, in my op at least, they're far too mainstream.

Also agreeing with pretty much anything by Mel Brooks - Blazing Saddles... I laugh just thinking about the flick.

Best Flippin' movie ever!!

Don't be mad because I've been chatting online with babes ALL DAY!

Thats pretty much the worst video ever made!

"Have you talked to the school nurse?"
"No! She doesn't know anything!"

I like your sleeves, they're real big!

I have your equipment in my locker. You'd better come get it beacause I can't fit my nunchucks(sp?) in there anymore.

Do the chickens have large talons?

Japanese scientists placed underwater explosives on the floor of Lach Ness to blow Nessie out of the water.

"What's a Lyger?"
"It's a lion and tyger mixed. It was bred with skills of magic. It's pretty much my favorite animal"

Yeah, it took me like three hours to do the shading on your upper lip. It's pretty much the best thing I've ever drawn.

OK thats enough, I could go on all day. But answer me this.. when was this supossed to be taking place? It's the biggest mystery ever. I say the early 90's!

LOL at LoveBug's favorite movie quotes!

What about:

Napoleon: "Can you do me a favor then, can you bring me my chapstick?
Kip: No, Napoleon.
Napoleon: But my lips hurt real bad!
Kip: Go ask the nurse, I know she has like 5 sticks in her drawer.
Napoleon: I'm not going to use hers, you sicko! (hangs up phone) Idiot!

*

Kip: ...besides, you know I've been training to become a cage fighter.
Napoleon: Since when, Kip, you have the worst reflexes of all time!

*

Uncle Rico: Back in '82, I used to be able to throw a pigskin a quater mile.
Kip: You serious?
Uncle Rico: I'm dead serious!

*

Bully: "Napoleon, gimme some of your tots!"
Napoleon: "No! Go find your own!"
Bully: "C´mon Napoleon! Gimme some of your tots!"
Napoleon: "No I´m starved I didn't get to eat anything today!"
(Bully Kicks Napoleon´s pocket that is full of tots)
Napoleon: **Long Sigh** Gross! Freakin' Idiot!

*

Napoleon: "I caught you a delicious bass!" (Pick-Up Line)

*

LOL!

Sincerely,
Noah Eaton

I bet I could throw a football over them mountains!

"Would you like to look like this?"
"Thats a girl"

Tina, FOOD!

I don't have any skills. Girls only date guys who have skills...

"Who's Trisha"
"My woman I'm taking to the dance"
"Did you draw her a picture?"
"Heck yes I did!"

Things are getting pretty serious.. we chat online for like two hours every night so I guess you could say things are getting pretty serious... I'm TO-ed though, because she hasn't sent me a full body shot yet!

And more!

"Like what are my skills?"
"Well you have a sweet bike. And you're really good at hooking up with chicks. Plus you're like the only guy at school who has a mustache."

"Kay, hold still right there. Now, just imagine you're weightless, in the middle of the ocean, surrounded by tiny little seahorses."

"She said she doesn't want you here when she gets back because you've been ruining everybody's lives and eating all our steak."

"You know, there's like a butt-load of gangs at this school. This one gang kept wanting me to join because I'm pretty good with a bowstaff."

"Are they still letting you run for president?"
"Yes. I don't understand... they say you're not allowed to have pinatas that look like real people, but in Mexico, we do it all the time."

"I like your sleeves. They're real big."
"Thank you. I made them myself."

On the advice of some young friends, I tried to watch Napoleon Dynamite..with the emphasis on TRIED. I got about 45 minutes into it and had to turn it off. Not my cup of tea.

I would like to take issue with this:

"cross-dressing fiasco of "Some Like It Hot"

xx

Fiasco? "Some Like it Hot"? It's a true classic - the comedy is brilliant - the acting superb! Watch it again...

I love John Cusack...there isn't anything he does I won't watch (America's Sweethearts - BAD).

My idea of a cult classic is 'The Full Monty'...I could watch that movie every day!!

Speaking of John Cusack? I had to watch Serindipity for school... still kind of retching, BTW. But Gross pointe Blanke and High Fidelity are good.

Blues Brothers? I just loved Ray's Gun Shop...

As for my favorites?

Big Lebowski (not so much Cult, I guess)

Any cheesy teen movie that has sense enough to poke fun at itself... Heathers, Jawbreaker, and Mean Girls come to mind.

Igby Goes Down was funny in a really dark, makes you feel kind f bad for laughing way...

Never saw Napolean Dinamite. Wanted to, but didn't.

I'd have to watch Strange Brew again, since when I did see it, even though I was fairly well read, I probably didn't get all the jokes.  Sometimes, the older you get, the more jokes you understand.

I agree with Aenimal on Python.  Back when I was in Abilene, TX, they showed Grail in the restored Paramount Theater.  One of our buds secured us balcony seats, front row, dead center, roughly 2 hours prior to showtime.  Good thing he did, since the place was packed with people standing in the aisles and along the walls.  Some were dressed in Medeival gear, some weren't, but everyone knew the lines and rang out in a strangulated chorus.  It was something to see, and something else to hear.

"Tommy Boy" is absolutely one of my favorite cult comedy classics! (It was a hit at the box office, but almost all reviews were negative)

I especially love the scenes when Farley/Spade sing together in the car, especially with the Carpenters track. Not to mention when they stop for gas and while Spade is having difficulty locating Davenport on the map, Farley accidentally breaks the car door when backing up too far and slams it into place, and when Spade comes back and motions opening the door, it breaks off and he's holding the panel and he says, acting suprised, "What'd you do?"

LOL!

"Canadian Bacon" is absolute comic genius too. Watching it now especially, it's so haunting to see all the familiarities to our culture now politically, and the satire feels so real! LOL! "I'll tell you another thing, this beer sucks!" and then the whole hockey arena goes quiet and riots start!

And whoever said "Raising Arizona", absolutely!!! I especially love it when Nicolas Cage's two prison buddies steal the baby they stole in the first place, Nathan Junior, after learning it isn't theirs and he stole them from Nathan Arizona's family, and when they stop at a convenience store and one of the robbers, Evelle, tells the cashier, "All right, I'll take these too. Now you lie down back there, and don't you move till you've counted up to...uh... eight hundred and twenty-five, and then backwards
down to zero. I'll be back to check-see y'ain't cheatin'." Then, when they realize they forgot the baby, they turn around and just as the cashier is in the middle of counting, he says, "Ah, bull(expletive)" and sees the robbers driving back and suprised he continues counting! LOL!

Love,
Noah Eaton

Ali, Strange Brew is a satire of canadian culture, or what people thought canadians were like. As for Monty, i can never decide between Life of Brian, Holy Grail and Meaning of Life. L#ve them all for different reasons.

Speaking of python, Eric Idle created one of the greatest cult comedies/spoofs with the Rutles.
