Mum (Dee) and I decided to take a holiday together in Tasmania. I have an aunt and uncle down there, and I haven't seen my uncle for about 11 years. I also tracked down a friend from primary school who moved to Tasmania, so I'm going to visit her too, since I haven't seen her for about 12 years! So I'm keeping a journal of what we're doing...

Day 1

Colin made us get out of bed at 5am! We got to the airport at about 7am, and the line was huge! But it didn't take long. We were grateful to be there at all, because Mum decided that 12 hours before we were due to leave would be an excellent opportunity to start getting very sick! But a quick dash to a day-night chemist eventually sorted her out.

The flight was pretty uneventful, except for the couple in front, who really should get a room. The airport was definitely not what I expected. Mum said I that I should wait to see the baggage come out. I asked if it was going to be a man with a wheelbarrow. I wasn't far off. They unloaded the suitcases onto their little truck, drove the truck into the arrivals area, and left us to it!

Our car was a pleasant surprise. We were expecting a 3 door Hyundai, and we got a current model Magna Executive! Had a quick look in Sorell, had lunch, then drove to Copping. We're staying in a little unit under the museum.

Had chicken parmagana for dinner at the Dunalley Hotel. Was really yummy, but neither or us could eat all of it! Brought it home for breaky.

Tomorrow we're going to surprise Auntie Lel and Uncle Jon, and spend the day with them.

More tomorrow!

Day 2

Not so windy today, but I'm sure it will get worse!

We've decided we'll "doo" lunch at Dootown. Some of the names of the houses here are brilliant. My favourite is doomeeup@once.now.ok. We went to the Blowhole and Tasman Arch, then to Port Arthur.

We also went to the Devil's Kitchen for a look. A little boy who was probably all of five years old asked Mum if she had found the devil yet.

At Pirates Bay (I love that name!) I let my blonde show a little bit. Stupid me blurts out "What's the lettuce on the boat ramp?" When Mum regained her composure, she told me it was seaweed. It really looks like lettuce! We found out at Port Arthur that it is called Bull Kelp.

Mum also had a little Janet Jackson moment at Pirates Bay. Went to get in the car and split the lining in her skirt - twice. Talk about wardrobe malfunction!

We were hoping to surprise Uncle Jon and Auntie Lel, but when we went over there, no-one was home!

So we made a flying visit to Port Arthur this afternoon, waiting for Auntie Lel and Uncle Jon to call. We just did the boat cruise around the harbour, and we'll finish it off tomorrow. I'm completely fascinated by the Isle of the Dead for some reason. We'll go and see the rest in the morning, our tickets let us go for two days in a row.

We've sent just about all our postcards now. I found one of the Tessellated Pavement for Dad, and I wrote on it, "Guess where we didn't go!!" Mum thought it was great.

Every time my grandma goes to Tasmania, she goes to the Tessellated Pavement, and I've seen all the photos, feels like I've seen hundreds of them, so I really didn't want to go there! :P

What a wonderful holiday you are having...
I think my feet are getting itchy and I know
for sure I'm just a tad bit jealous of all of this fun!

Day 3

Going to see the rest of Port Arthur quickly today, then go to see Megan, which is about 160km away. Have to go all the way back around Hobart, even though Huonville is pretty much just across the bay from Murdunna.

Megan and I were friends at primary school, we haven't seen each other since we were about 11. I managed to track her down on a website called www.schoolfriends.com.au and when Mum and I decided to go to Tasmania, of course we had to catch up!

Last night after it finally got dark, Uncle Jon showed us the wallabies that came into the back yard. Mum and I also spotted a feathertail glider.

Well! Didn't we have an interesting day today! I finally got to see Megan, even if it was quite late. We got a late start from Auntie Lel and Uncle Jon's, and got to Port Arthur ten minutes after I wanted to leave. We saw all the rest of the things we wanted to see - the Penetentiary, Guard House, asylum, pauper's mess, separate prison and chapel and the church.

The chapel was really weird, all the prisoners in their separate stalls. The church was amazing. It's just a shell, but you can see how beautiul it would have been. It was never consecrated because there were more than just Roman Caltholics there, and of course the Church wasn't very impressed with that.

It was about 12 when we left, so he had planned to go straight to Megan's, but we ended up going to Copping to get some wine. It was about 3.30 by the time we got to Megan's. I got to meet Megan's son, Ethan, who is a gorgeous and very energetic 18 month old! Megan was exactly the same as I remember, only taller! We talked about friends from school, most of whom Megan is still in contact with.

After we went into town to meet Steve, Megan's husband, we went to Cascades, where we "thought" there was a B&B. Then we discovered it was just called Cascades, and it was actually back near Port Arthur!

We called into a pub, but they were full, so we went to Kingston Beach. They have three accommodation places, all full! It was heading towards 9pm, so we thought we'd get petrol, then brave Hobart. While Mum was paying for the petrol, she was chatting with the attendant, who told her that The Globe hotel wasn't far.

We came in as they were packing up, but they had a room! So we're going to go back to Copping after we'e been to Cascade brewery and the Female Factory, but we'll call and check first!
