VEGEMITE that is!

(thanks, I think, Maree)

grin

I should have filmed the opening.

"Whatizzit?"

The family had gathered around.

"Looks like medicine..."

Then I opened.

ACK!

"Looks like..."

I shushed my son before he cussed.

I sniffed.

Smelled like a powerful vitamin to me.

"Who wants to try first?"

"Well, it was a gift to you" my husband grinned.

"Well considering all the nasties I've already had in my mouth" I looked at him pointedly, "I'll try it first."

So I dipped my pinky in and gave it go.

"It's actually not that bad." I said, after considering.

My family looked suspicious.

"You are trying to trick us into doing something gross," my son said.

"No, really," I took another taste off the pinky, as my daughter followed my lead, before I could add, "once you get past the smell."

We watched her face and she gagged, running to the garbage can first to spit, grabbing a napkin and rubbing the residuals off of her tongue, she ran to the lavatory to brush her teeth and gargle.

"WHAT IS THAT STUFF?"

I heard her yell.

"Why, it's vegemite!" I smiled.

She was looking cross.

"Oh for Pete's sake," I said, "if it were Japanese you'd love it."

(My daughter loves all things Japanese.)

But honestly, it's not bad. Kinda high in sodium, but then, so is sucking the brains out of crawfish.

Shrugs, grins and gratitude to my sweet and luscious Maree.

(The beanie koala is darling, and I absolutely adore the serenity fairy!)

I hope you're not embarrassed by my very public thank you.

I just had to share the story, as I seem to recall a vegemite argument between Christopher and Kamla. (I tried to find the thread, but ya'll know me...sigh.)

Hugs to me lovely.

And ya'll all get some vegemite today. I was thinking it might be good with grits, but I've never had black grits before.

This stuff has the consistancy and appearance of "drawing salve" folks. All you suthernahs should know what I'm talking about there.

Hold yer nose and dig in!

Love to my Dark Angel for the gifties.

LOL, I'm a vegetarian but never could swallow more than a half spoonful of vegemite. Guess it's something you have to get used to when you are young?
Enjoy it, Karen. Maybe on sesame crackers or pita bread, or ...
as I remember a friend of mine doing...blending it with a half cup of ketchup. LOL.

Well Kacy, I'd say it grows on you, but I'm afraid it might actually do just that.

But seriously?

It's the sort of flavor that tastes better in the melting...

I've not given up on it yet.

Besides, I need the niacin. As for the vitamin smell of it. Well, I seem to have an acquired taste for chemicals that leaves me less daunted than most.

It's just that it's so...black. I'm wondering what properties it might have dried.

(sigh...been a home-style chemist for years folks, it's just the way I think)

Well sweetie I've been a vegetarian from birth and I ain't never heard of vegemite! I've eaten tons of vegemeat but I gotta tell ya' whatever that stuff is it just sounds plain nasty. Good thing your daughter didn't call CPS!

I knew you were brave but now I'm persuaded you are scared of nothin'!

Ahh Geez, we had a jar of that stuff at the restaurant (supplied by an ex-patriot Aussie) gave a taste to anyone that showed an interest
...And NO one liked it
...And VERY few would even (ahem) swallow it.
If you don't change your motor oil for a couple 100,000 miles, what is left inside would no doubt pass for Vegemite in color and consistancy. but NOTHING I could guess at would match it in nastiness.

This, Ladies and Gents is considered FOOOOD

(And? it's made by Kraft, not Dow as one would suspect)

C'MON guys...so it's oily, and black, and smells like a refinery.

So you got yourself some of the black gold from down under. Have it on your toast first thing in the morning, or use a good spoonful of it when making the gravy.

Its good stuff.

Wanna taste of pure delight?
Try a little Vegemite!!
Have yourself a little bite..
Try a little Vegemite!!

Spread it on your toast like Smuckers
Feel it make your a-hole pucker
Throat begins to feel warmer
Soon becomes a three-alarmer.
Fingernails tear at your skin
Feel contractions now begin
Stomach ties itself in knots
You begin to get the trots
Sweat cascading down your face
Leaving you in sad disgrace.
Fingernails being to break
Feel your joints and muscles ache
Heart rate goes ten miles a minute
What the hell's that stuff got in it??
Pick yourself up off the floor
Have yourself a little more!

You can eat it day or night.
Try a little Vegemite!!
Aussies say that it'a alright
Try a little Vegemite!!
Have  some wine to quench your thirst
Better make your will out first
Bid the world fond goodnight
Then try a little Vegemite!

It's great on wheat toast or crackers. With beer. LOTSA beer.

but yep...I'm serious here. Caught myself licking the spoon earlier...

Thanks maree, for opening the doors to new delicacies!

LOTS of beer, is right, since it tastes so salty, as I recall. But it's concentrated yeast, with beaucoup vitamin B and other goodies, so
open wide
take a spoonful of beer
and let the medicine go down

you can have my share

and yep, once again I am the alien creep mother from hell.

"As it wasn't bad enough," the daughter sighed, "NOW she eats VEGEMITE!"

grin

mother's revenge I say

And it's true, I have become a fan. The family thinks me crazy, but then, I'm just living up to their expectations.

NOT my beer! LOL, OK, maybe one beer or glass of red wine. BTW, today, I am trying something totally bizarre...it's PUMPKIN beer. I'm not kidding!
Pumpkin Ale, courtesy of Buffalo Bill's Brewery, Portland. Comes with an orange cap, and picture of a pumpkin on the label.
It is....different. Maybe it would be a nice complement to that black paste?

LOL, halloween colors....

I've never tried pumpkin beer, but it sounds like it has possibilities.

We used to brew our own and I really liked the fruit based recipes. And? I've got a friend who owns a micro brewery, and he makes this strawberry beer that is just wonderful! But he only makes the stuff in season and because his veddy secret recipe is so time consuming, he charges 8 bucks a glass. Um, for everybody else. grin...

I get mine on the house. Apparently he enjoys my appreciation.
