What do you think of online dating? I've heard some opinions on the poetry forum but I'd like to see some responses on here.  What do you think about it? thnx

Love is giving him the ability to break your heart...but trusting him enough to know he won't.

Meeting friends online isn't really any different from meeting them anywhere else.  Use the same diligent precautions... Get to know them well... Beware of inconsistencies in their personalities... Allow their true personalities to unfold...

People are all the same no matter what the source of your introduction.  The internet just allows the added dimension of their being able to present a false front for a bit.  But doesn't the bar atmosphere do the same?

Take your time.  Get to know each other.  It'll be what it'll be.  There's no hurry...

Dig it, I met my wonderful, wonderful, Mikey via the net.
I feel, there are risks to all dating,,be it emotional,or physical....
People can "fake" whom they are,,,be they a blind date, from a dating service, the dude from the office, or from online.
No matter what, a person has to trust themselves, and never rush into any relationship,,,,that's my views,,,,thank you

Michelle

I wish all could find the true happiness I have found,,in the eyes of Mike

Why "date" someone in a cloud,
When you may meet someone on an open plain, under the sun?

Actually, i met my boyfriend over the internet.  We met on Yahoo Messenger.
It even turned out that we live very close to one another, so we can see each other whenever.
I find that there is NOTHING wrong with online dating...

and I keep wondering why people think this is something new.

Courtship through correspondence is as old as parchment.

It's just much faster now.

I agree with what Nan said. Smile, it took four years, but I trust her now. *giggle*

Meeting people online offers many a chance to be themselves, a chance to be completely open and frank that they might not have otherwise. It also offers an opportunity to eliminate the facades we put up in public. This assists in getting to know the true essence of a person much quicker than usual. That's not to say there aren't negatives of course. The anonymity of the net offers the absolute opposite to occur because afterall online or offline the world is full of absolute @holes. It can also take away from people's ability to strike up live' relationships.

I'm not for scouring and patroling forums and chatrooms for the purpose of dating. As Essorant says, it's much nice nicer to meet someone 'under the sun.' But if you do chance upon an incredible someone over the net, why not take the opportunity? I've been lucky enough to meet some of the most beautiful(inside-out) and intelligent human beings online, I even fell head over heels over one of them once. Shtuff happens.

It really seems to work for other people, but not for me. I manage to turn up all the scary ones. I had one guy that I had been talking to on MSN for about five minutes, which is no exaggeration, and he had given me his phone number and asked me to call him. I didn't...

I guess it's no different to other forms of finding a partner - dating agencies, personals, joining a club - works for some, not for others.

Personally, I think it's something you have to learn to grow out of.  Let's face it... there are things real and tangible that are important in a romantic relationship.  I think the idea that true love can exist in text-only format is cheap.

Undoubtedly Brian, but as a starting point, there's nothing wrong with it. Of course eventually it must move beyond text or it is nothing but an illusion.

Don't confuse love with mating. There are several people in these forums I can, with clear conscious, say I sincerely love. Never met most of them, never will, and it simply doesn't matter.

Mating is as much about physical needs (and I'm not talking simply about sex) as it is emotional ones. As such, what we're really talking about is technological limitations. What will happen when we can really reach out and touch someone?
