I've noticed that we get about five new members every day. This is great, it's nice that people are showing an interest in poetry, but why do only one out of ten stay for more than a mounth?

What's the point of comeing? do they just want to be in the book? I've welcomed so many of them, and some never do more than that first post.

We saw that a lot with the last book too. Some people just want to be in the book - they're going to miss being a part of the family around here.

Judging by some of the tabulations, they're going to miss being part of the book, too.

and judging by some of the tabulations its not just new people posting and leaving either.

Book or not, we see this all the time in here... some people are givers and some takers and many fall in between...I think some come in and post and once they find they have to give back, do replies and participate they dont want to make the effort...and I think some are overwhelmed by how fast the forums can move...and I've had some tell me they dont like that they cant bump their work, many forums still have that. But if someone is genuinely here for love of poetry and a desire to learn and grow as a poet..they will make the effort and will stick around.  We see a lot leave and come back too...I think it also has to do with time...some have the time, some make the time...some dont have it to spend.
different strokes and all that jazz.
It's what makes life interesting right?

no time to list them all for you...so you next assignment is to write a short poem as to why this happens..and the sadness of it..
LOL..

or...

We'll stick you on the next reality show to come along that feeds the contestants really gross stuff... like yogurt.

Wind... not even the cruelest of reality shows would have yogurt eaten off my face... there are limits to what humans can  be expected to do... and anyone with human genes
could not be expected to lick yogurt off anything as gross as my face...

now..a dog might... but hey..you know dogs..they'll even lick their own butt..

I joined a short while ago, then I saw the standard or writers here and was scared off. At some point, I wandered back and have even attempted to write some poetry off the bat.. but I can never do it as quickly, as often or as well as most of the poems that come up in the forums.. so now I mostly read and if the mood strikes , string a few lines together, but I always feel embarassed when I read through the list. It usually goes - from the top - good poem, good poem, great poem, touching poem, great poem, meaningful poem, my poem, great poem, fantastic poem, good poem... etc

sweetwater...I tend to feel the same way.  I look at Cpat, Sunshine, etc... and feel like I could never express myself so eloquently...

but being here is MORE than just writing poetry.  It's friendship, reading other poets, and expressing feelings.  And, the more you read, the more inspired you become (and things even pop into your head!)   And, who am I to say that writing about HOW I AM FEELING isn't just as good as someone writing about something abstract...

keeping on writing.  Make genuine remarks, and next time you think about leaving, you will know what you'll be missing...

One of the most special things about this Passionate Place of Poetry is that we have a very wide gamut of writing abilities among our membership.  Everyone is welcome to contribute and share their work... Everyone has to start somewhere...

We have some who've begun as novices and have grown immensely in their abilities.. and some who just don't care to try.  We're a slice of real-life writers...

Some of the folks who've been gone awhile and have come back "just to submit" for the book are highly talented folks that we're extremely happy to see - Others we don't know well, but may perhaps be equally as talented. Each of us is unique... That's what we're about...

Hey JP... We locked the door when we let you in this time... You're not escaping again...

Well, KristieSue, this took me by surprise,
quote:
I look at Cpat, Sunshine, etc... and feel like I could never express myself so eloquently...

and sweetwater,
quote:
then I saw the standard or writers here and was scared off.

Y'all ever seen a shy goose?  That's me.  Talk about nervous, scared, shy rolled into one...that was me for most of my life.  Just to get through things, I have always had to put on a brave front, and if ever anything meant so much to me, it was to try to gain the ability to write where others could "get something from it".  Not that they understood, so much, but that they FELT the words.  So I tentatively offered a few poems some 3.5 years ago and voila...I met a community of poets that said "welcome, you are HOME..."

To see that someone thinks I write as well as Cpat - now there is a compliment, for, you see, I hold him in much higher regard than he would like to know!  There are so many GREAT writers here on the boards that I still feel honored that they let me stay!  I have studied THEM, [Ron Carnell, Elizabeth Santos, Sy Tabin, Poet Devine, Mysteria, Balladeer, Toerag, LngJohnAg, Nan, Serenity, and a little moth lady.....I could go on and on...because there are SO many here and I'm barely scratching the surface...] and every day I come in here, I learn a little more...

So never become discouraged that you think you're "not as good" because there is no such thing.  We all develop in different stages, at different times.  Our lives take us away for a short while, but eventually when we are looking for heartstrings to be plucked, we come back here, and find comfort, solace, education, peace, life...

And Wind, the good thing about the new folks coming in just for the book is that...they may come back to stay!

And JP?  The door is FIRMLY latched from letting you escape again!

OK... now I have to weigh in again... dang it...

questions:
1. How or why in the world would anyone feel intimidated by the other writers here? I have yet to see anyone belittle or browbeat another's poem.

2. I can't help but wonder if what others see when they read our poems or offerings.. is so often much kinder than our own opinons.. Kristie..for example saying Sunshine and I perhaps made her feel she could never be so eloquent in expressing herself.. well I for one am not eloquent... and hate most of what I write as being either so poorly expressed or so overdone.
So..just because you don't think you write at the same level as someone else is it not wise to remember that others may think much more of your talents than you do?

Now... this stuff about not sharing..because you don't write as often or as much...or don't feel it is good enough...sorry... not buying it... all BS... post it!!!!! let us read it and learn..read then other people and learn what it is you like and what you don't...and make parts of it you own...
no one is born a poet or a writer... you get there by practice..by trial and error..

no one here is laughing at anyone else... or belittling anyones efforts that I have seen..and in truth if they did..I think the good people on here would string them up..or tar and feather them after giving them due chances to mend their ways...

this is about the safest place I have seen for new and old writers to mix..and learn..

ok... I'm going back to me corner now..and shut up...

first, i broke my ankle and not spending much time "on line".

second, my work schedule is atrocious right now, with overtime - and hobbling about... had to set some priorities...

so mostly i pop in read a couple things, pop back out.  but i'll be back before too long to enjoy all the fun here.

Here's the opinion of a person who disappears off the face of the planet from time to time:

I suffer from "ooh, shiny!" syndrome. I am very easily distracted, so when I first joined PiP, it was the absolute greatest thing to have ever existed, ever. But then it wasn't new, and I remembered I should be doing schoolwork at school, instead of taking advantage of the computer lab to use the internet. So I started only using this at home, which led to even less sleep than I usually get...

Hm.

Also, "ooh, shiny!" syndrome has decided to make me a moody little git. My moods are as quick to change as my fancies. I'll get mad at myself, shut off the the entire world (meaning PiP too!), and just not exist for days, weeks, months.

Wish I could get back into the state where having a place to *put* poetry made it easy to *write* poetry. I was there for a while! Wrote the most poems I have in years, last June and July, I think... Then came the evil, evil, evil apathy. And I drifted away from this place. Drifted back a few times.

And think I'm actually sort of back for a while, but I have poet's block. Not writer's block, since my stories are flowing maybe a little too fine, but poet's block.

I blame that on missing Mike immensely... Wah!

Also, I'm a pretty selfish li'l git. I admit this openly. Mike would probably challenge this, but he's deluded, anyway. I'm really caught up in myself, and am truly *terrified* to do anything to make me look stupid, so I find it hard to reply to other people's poems (even though I do read voraciously, when given the time), for fear of coming off like I don't know what the hell I'm saying. Um, oops?

You should see me in person. Heh. I only talk to people I know, unless I get angry, then boy oh boy, no one can stop me.

remember the sound
that could wake the dead
but nobody woke up at all
