I noticed the long trend of song-related discussion threads for faves, and this came to mind. What songs have inspired you the most, in other words, what songs have reflected your life or inspired your poetry most of all?

My list:

Shakira- Underneath Your Clothes
Counting Crows- Murder Of One
Dave Matthews Band- Dancing Nancies
Shakira- Poem To A Horse
David Gray- Silver Lining
Matchbox Twenty- Kody
Default- Wasting My Time
John Mayer- Why Georgia Why?
Dave Matthews Band- Crash
R.E.M- Shining Happy People
Sheryl Crow- A Change (Would Do You Good)
Sheryl Crow- If It Makes You Happy
Shakira- Ciega Sordomuda

What is yours?

Love,
Noah Eaton

I am now going to start my list with a song that will confuse the hell out of anyone who has read any of my other song lists.

The Change, as performed by Garth Brooks.

To fall back into my style:

Anything by Jim Steinman.
the perfect drug by Nine Inch Nails (this thing inspired six novels; Mike can vouch for it )
Ribbons by The Sisters of Mercy.
The entire album Pornography, by The Cure.
Anything by Faith & the Muse.

So there y' go. Another look into my mind. Music is allll that's in there.

written in blood before everything went black

Anything from the pain-drenched, sometimes coke-addled mind of Brian Wilson. One of the few songwriters of such beauty even among corruption, that it brings me to tears (honestly). He's one of my creative heroes, actually.

She said burn ... together.

I have a few oldies for all you younger poets.
"If you don't know me by now" by Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes

"Don't Leave Me This Way" by Thelma Houston

And most of Sara Maclaughlin's songs, the lyrics really say so much.

so many, so little time. Ok the main ones.

Find the river by R.E.M. one of their best songs.

Almost anything by Leonard Cohen. He sings of hope, love and despair like no one else. There was a good reason why Kurt Cobain sung about a "Leonard Cohen afterworld"

The boatman's call by Nick Cave, it is my love album, especially "Into my arms"

Design for life and Small Black flowers  by the manic street preachers.

SOme songs by the Patti Smith Group.

and lastly and most importantly Joy Division. They are my misery blanket. The true merchants of misery, they make Radiohead sound like bubblepop, but even
at their darkest their is something evocative about their music. "The eternal"  never fails to send shivers down my spine.

Too early for the rainbow, too early for the dove These are the final days, this is the darkness, this is the flood

So many so so so many!

Here's a fraction:

Ye now are sorrowful-- Brahms
Ode to Joy-- Beethoven
Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring-- Bach
Amazing Grace
I miss my friend-- Darryl Worley
It's been awhile-- Staind
Hymn of Promise
All cried out -- Allure and 112
Bethlehem Morning-- Sandi Patti
Above all-- Micheal W Smith
Somewhere in the night-- Micheal W Smith
My Redeemer Lives -- Nichole Mullen
Not a Day Goes By-- Lonestar
Love Song-- Third Day
This Road-- Jars of Clay
He was more than a Man -- RA West (my uncle)

Music is my comfort and joy, a gift from God to help me go through whatever He puts on me...

Most of us go to our grave with our music still inside of us.

Today I had my headphones on listening to Tori (who else? ) and my friend wanted to talk to me. I told her that I couldn't hear her and she told me to take my headphones off. I told her no, the world is better when there's music.

Like Catalinamoon, my favorites, other than contemporary country and southern gospel, are;

My cup runneth over (with love)
Everybody loves somebody sometime
'Til there was you
Chances are

OK I'll stop boring you

Fool, said my Muse to me, look in thy heart and write.
