Do you think you would know which PiP member wrote a particular piece of poetry if their name wasn't on it? Do you think everyone has a distinct style?

there are many times i can catch them... but then too, there are times i can't... sometimes, the poet will post different styles under different names, assume different attitudes... heh, even different genders

I believe I can spot the work of certain poets, but certainly not all

There are a few that, no matter how hard they try to hide their identity, I will know after two or three pieces

Except for some warped rhythm choices, I don't think I have a "style." *S* Granted, anyone who knows me at all would probably recognize my whining poems. *G* But I don't always whine. *G* Honestly! *G*

I think I'd recognize some poets simply by their unfailing excellence... they'd have to TRY to write badly to keep their talents at bay. I've watched them experiment and the attention to detail means superb reading, whatever format they choose.

This isn't too much of a confession since I've already had Ron combine my posts... but I did find myself wondering once whether people responded to my posts because they liked my poems... or because they liked me. So I posted a couple of poems under another name... they didn't garner any 40 or 50 responses, but neither do my posts as suthern. *G* They were, however, fairly well received... and that gave me some much needed confidence. *S* I wasn't recognized and I'm glad... for that would have defeated my purpose.

I learned something from that venture other than that people might read my work from more than loyalty. *G* For I quickly realized that it's the way I respond that would give my secret away more than the way I write poems... I just can't bring myself to be succinct??? LOL

I guess that I can now.  Seeing how I have been here that long.  I know the way Ruth words move, Elizabeth, Naners and even you PdV. I know the way that Ali, Balladeer,Christopher, and a few others write.

I know that you know that when I write I don't use puntuation. Alot of my pieces are sad.

I guess that you more or less have to study a wroter for years.  Probably the amount of years that we have been reading, enjoying, and studying each other.

My literary efforts are generally easy to spot, look for style; eloquence; depth; feeling; meter; metaphor and originality and if none are present you can be fairly sure I wrote it.

i have been known to know who they are even when they claimed they didn't know who they were. Sometimes it's really VERY obvious.

There are a few poets that I think I would recognize…Duncan, Catalinamoon, Midnightsun and Enchantress spring to mind. So some definitely do have a distinctive style, but not everyone. Good question

I would like to think that some poets use their ability to take on a new name and under that psuedonym s-t-r-e-t-c-h their abilities a bit...

it's been known to happen...

Do I recognize all?  No...some?  Yes....but more often than not...I'm not looking at WHO wrote it so much as WHAT was written...and when I find out that the poet was this and that and then someone else...all I can do is applaud their talents...

I guess I've been trying to find out if having a 'style' is limiting - does it inhibit our growth as a poet?

another question might be - how many people use aliases to bump their own posts?

Haha, this turned out to be a funny thread. I recognize some, Serenity and Doreen, for sure, others sometimes. I will admit when Irish Rose started writing under another name, I did not know it was her. Same when Maureen became Wynter, it took awhile. SO I gues I am not that good at it.

There are only two poets I can definately tell by style.  Unfortunately, neither of them posts any more. Wicked Witch of the East and Mike, where did y'all disappear to?
In a more serious vein, generally, the better the poet, the easier it is to distinguish their style.  David2, Meadowmuse, H.Arlequin, Michael, Gunslinger, and Skyfyre come to mind as far as infrequent or former posters.

Hmm, although my "style" of writing is easily recognized, I, too, believe I could fool most of you because like most, I choose a method of writing that I enjoy, and except for the technical aspects, believe I could change my "style" and tone anytime I wanted.  I could even learn the technical aspects and write "technically correct" items,
like most any of you (and in many ways I really highly respect those of you that do),
but am satisfied with the meagerness of what I do.

I don't believe everyone has a distinct style (some do), though most do have a recognizable style they use. Heck, if it works why change it - is an attitude most of us have, though a lot do play with different ways of presentation - quite successfully too. And some - gee, they just do "anything" and it's successful.

Is style limiting?  I don't think so. The only limitation to any "style" is the ability to add freshness to the subject, which in most cases is nothing new, the only newness being how it was presented, and I think we all suffer with that, some of you so much less than most of us. I mean, how may poems have been written about a particular subject??? How many more can be written about it???  Interestingly???

Normally I look at WHAT was written, then the WRITER (although some names do connontate excellence - TITLES draw me in - a good title, to me, opens doors), and praise the writer for the piece, whom ever.  And, of course, excellence, in other than technical aspects, is in the eyes of the individual reader.

Gee, guess I've gotten too serious here...but what the heck...

Loved the question PDV...gives one pause.

I don't know that I have a style that's like anyone else's.

Perhaps, I should go back and read myself.

Thank you.
