This was given to me by my 14 year old nephew Tyler. In his concern for awareness and prevention on with subject, he asked my to share with  as many people as possible.  Please remember that I live in Toronto, Ont. and to carry guns here in Canada is against the law.  However, our gun problem is just as bad as yours if not worse.  Unfortunitly we are no strangers to this type of heartache...
Mommy...
Johnny brought a gun 2skool,
He told his friendsz that it was kool,
And when he pulled the trigger back,
It shot with a great crack.
Mommy, I was a good girl, I did
What I was told,
I went to skool, I got straight A's,
I even got the gold!
But Mommy, when I went school that day,
I never said good-bye,
I'm sorry Mommy, I had to go,
But Mommy, please don't cry.
When Johnny shot the gun,
He hit me and another,
And all because Johnny,
Got the gun from his older brother.
Mommy, please tell Daddy;
That I  him very much,
And plz tell Chris; my boyfriend;
That it wasn't just a crush.
And tell my little sister;
That she is the only one now,
And tell my dear sweet grandmother;
I'll by waiting for her now,
And tell my wonderful friends;
That they always were the best;
Mommy, I'm not the first,
I'm no better than the rest.
Mommy, tell my teachers;
I won't show up for class,
And never to forget this,
And please don't let this pass.
Mommy, why'd it have to be me?
No one deserves this,
Mommy, warn the others,
Mommy I left without a kiss.
And Mommy tell the doctors;
I know they really did try,
I think I even saw a doctor,
Trying not to cry.
Mommy, I'm slowly dying,
With a bullet in my chest,
But Mommy please remember,
I'm in heaven with the rest.
Mommy I ran as fast as I could,
When I heard that crack,
Mommy, listen to me if you would,
I'm not coming back.
I wanted to go to college,
I wanted to try things that were new,
I guess I'm not going with Daddy,
On that trip to the new zoo.
I wanted to get married,
I wanted to have a kid,
I wanted to be an actress,
Mommy, I wanted to live.
But Mommy I must go now,
The time is getting late,
Mommy, tell my boyfriend,
I'm sorry but I had to cancel the date.
I love you Mommy, I always have, I know; you know it's true,
And Mommy all I wanted to say is,

"Mommy, I love you."

Our children are as safe as we can possibly and humanly make them.

My school has a secret code that airs over the intercom if the office becomes aware of a hazardous situation.  When staff hear the message, the school goes into a lockdown mode.

In the past year I had to have a 12 year old girl removed from my class.  She was on the playground and threatened other girls in the class. She said she intended to bring her mom's gun to school and blow them away.  She never returned to my class after that day.  She was put into a totally supervised one-on-one classroom.  Did she mean her threat? We didn't know - but we couldn't take the chance.  Our world has changed, hasn't it?

Being a student at a public high-school, I thought I must say that I feel incredibly safe at school. We too have secret codes that air over the intercom in cases such as intruders, intruders with weapons, missing children, etc. We have cameras throughout the school hallways and parking lot to makesure no one is stashing drugs in lockers, carrying guns down the hallways..etc. And although we don't have metal detectors like most schools...We've still have never had a problem with guns or anything. We have, however, had children threaten teachers and students with the "I'm gonna kill you." and they are automatically expelled or sent to alternative school...Whether it is said jokingly, out of rage, or in all seriousness....Things like that aren't a joke anymore. But yes, I do think school is safe... Nothing can be 100% safe from danger...Our schools and their staff are doing the best they can to make school a happy, safe enviroment.

Every now and then I like to stick my foot in my mouth...

Nan, that is a sad story.  As you said, who knows if she in fact meant it but chances simply can't be taken.  It is a very sad world we live in and I'm certainly glad I am passed school days.  It is a scary thing to send your kids to school today.

Spice, I can see why you would feel safe in your particular school, but it upsets me greatly to know that these precautions are even necessary.  It has been about 10 years since I left high school ( not giving away age or anything     ) and things of this nature just simply were unheard of and I went to school in Pickering, a town just outside of downtown Toronto, Ont.  so it wasn't even that I live in a small unsuffisticated town. Things change I guess.
