I have yet to meet a poet who wasnt as passionate about music as they were poetry...and many poets also write song lyrics...and vise versa...
and I see many of us here include song lyrics or use them as our signatures ...
Anyway... are there some certain song verses or even just one line from a song that once you heard them they have stayed with you, maybe for years..as they perhaps define you... or they define a moment in your life that changed you.
I had a song writer friend who called such a verse..
"A FACT OF LIFE" .... words to live by.
So anyone care to share a few... and keep coming back if ya think of more...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
She said I don't know if I've ever been good enough
I'm a little bit rusty, and I think my head is caving in
and I don't know if I've ever been really loved
by a hand that's touched me,
well I feel like something's gonna give ...
~MatchBox20~
Push
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When you see through love's illusions, there lies the danger
And your perfect lover just looks like a perfect fool

So you go running off in search of a perfect stranger
While the loneliness seems to spring from your life
Like a fountain from a pool...

Now for you and me it made not be that hard to reach our dreams
But that magic feeling never seems to last
And while the future's there for anyone to change
Still you know it's seems
It would be easier sometimes to change the past

~Jackson Browne~
Fountain Of Sorrow
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Baby dont you work so hard for this prize you found
it will all be gone when you turn around...
nothing lasts forever any way.
~Rick Roberts~
Windmills
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Found your heart and lost your lover
Licked your wounds then run for cover
take your time--there will be another
and dont make the same mistake twice ...
unless you can pay the price.

~Dan Fogelberg~
Captured Angel

she said I dont know why you ever would lie to me
like I'm a little untrusting when I think that the truth is gonna hurt ya

You know, I wish I could remember more ofthe lyrics, but all I can think of is "Love Hurts" yeah yeah...Love Hurts by Nazareth.
Now I know there were other words, just I'm too depressed to think of them.
I'll come up with some better stuff tomorrow.

I really like the lyrics to Pink Floyds "Wish You Were Here"
We're just two lost souls
Swimmin' in a fish bowl
Year after year.

I also like 3 Doors Down Kryptonite

You called me strong, you called me weak,
But still your secrets I will keep.
You took for granted all the times I never
Let you down.
You stumbled in and bumped your head
If not for me then you'd be dead.
I picked you up and put you back on solid ground.
(this lyric reminds me of my husband)
This is from Soul Asylum Runaway Train

Can you help me remember how to smile?
Make it somehow all seem worthwhile?
How on earth did I get so jaded?
Life's mystery seems so faded.
And then there is Tubthumping by Chumbawamba

I get knocked down but I get up again
You're never going to keep me down.

I am shocked how long have we known each other OH you should know I have a passion for music and lyrics. Oh I am trying to think now, mind almost went blank.
Of course I have to mention Manic street preachers and Joy Division. I can't think of any really uplifting poetic lyrics. THe first one is a b-side so beautiful and haunting.

Could easily pick almost any Joy Divison song and call it poetry. WHile the Doors created haunting dreamy poetry, Joy Division stared straight into the human soul creating abrasive, industrial and gothic soundscapes, an orginal style of music.

===================

Manics

Love Torn Us Under
(Nicky Wire / Richey Edwards)

Heaven's weariness, I'm climbing the walls
Asleep, I daydream, I could change it all
Running from something too painful to face
Epitaph's torn into barefoot soled feet

Ecstasy's columns decay into night
Underneath hope she let sanity die
Wasting my time on the shackles of her love

At night complete love's torn us under
Love is dragging me under
Betray my other self
The lost hours are over

A gentleman's left me, A cataract's past life
Searching for something I'm unable to find

Too weak, too envious, sorrow's daily rhyme
I found so much grief that I just turned ice

Memory cannot choose where it wants to be
Love this sex, self pity as mangled sheets
A tenderness declines in the mind

At night complete love's torn us under
Love is dragging me under
Betray my other self
The lost hours are over

=========

A Means to an end (Ian Curtis)

A legacy so far removed
One day will be improved
Eternal rights we left behind
We were the better kind
Two the same - set free too
I always looked to you --

We fought for good - stood side by side
Our friendship never died
On stranger waves - the lows and highs
Our vision touched the skies
Immortalists with points to prove
put my trust in you --

A house somewhere on foreign soil
Where ageing lovers call
Is this your goal - your final needs?
Where dogs and vultures eat
Committed still, I turn to go
I put my trust in you --

In you, in you, in you
Put my trust in you, in you

================

I don't have the lyrics at hand but Ghost SOng from THe Doors. Sound of Silence by Pual Simon and Art are some other songs.

"Build a man a fire, he'll be warm for a day. Set a man on fire and he'll be warm for the rest of his life". Terry Pratchett

Someone up above mentioned "Wish You Were Here" by Pink Floyd.  I love that song.

"So, so you thought you could tell heaven from hell."

Counting Crows have some great songs.  This one's from "Goodnight Elisabeth."

"We couldn't all be cowboys
so some of us our clowns,
and some of us are dancers
on the midway, we roam
from town to town."

But I think the greatest lyric ever written is in Pearl Jam's "Wishlist."

"I wish I was the full moon
shining off a Camaro's hood."

Man, do I wish that sometimes.

We wish ourselves beautiful ...
we cry in the night.
Its not love we fear ...
its the fall from the height.
~Edwin McCain~

In the time we've known
That we each are a part of one another
We've lost as much as we have won
And as our lives have grown
We have found that it only brings us pain
To hang on to the things that we have done

Still I love the times you've come

Oh Janet.....   you know....I've listened to Prince for most of my life....since I was 9 and I'm 30 now....he has a song for my every mood....some I couldn't share here....   they'd need to be in Adult....(most actually LOL) it really is impossible to pick a favorite....but.....let's see.....

Private Joy
My little secret, my private joy
I could never let another play with my toy
My little angel from heaven above
oh oh oh oh oh I think I'm falling in love
And I ain't gonna tell nobody nobody 'bout my little pretty toy
All the other kids would love to love u but u're my little private joy
my private joy -- u're my private joy
private joy -- such a pretty toy
joy, u are my private joy
U're my little lover, Orgasmatron
Only I know, only I know, baby, what turns u on
U're my little secret neon light
Girl I wanna turn it on turn it on turn it on every night
Ain't gonna tell nobody nobody 'bout my little pretty toy
All the other kids would love to love u but u're my little private joy
my private joy -- u're my private joy
private joy -- such a pretty toy
joy -- oh my private joy
Shoot me up baby, let's take a trip
I can't get enough can't get enough of your private private joy joy
joy -- such a such a pretty toy
joy -- u are my private joy
joy -- shoot me up baby, let's take a trip
joy -- can't get enough of your private
joy -- come on honey baby get up, get up
I strangled Valentino (He strangled Valentino)
Been mine ever since (been his ever since)
If anybody asks u (if anybody asks u)
U belong to Prince (U belong to Prince)
come on baby, get up, get up, get up, get up
*********************************************

that would be my favorite happy song...I have really great memories attached to it.....I don't just like Prince...there are many more......he's just well, my Private Joy

All alone or in twos the ones who really love you
Walk up and down outside your wall
Some hand in hand some gathered together in bands
The bleeding hearts and the artists make their stand
And when they've given their all, some stagger and fall
After all it's not easy
Banging your heart against some mad buggers wall

Pink Floyd/Roger Waters (from The Wall)

Peter Gabriel~In your eyes~ from the movie Say Anything~

"in your eyes
the light the heat
in your eyes
I am complete
in your eyes
the resolution
in your eyes
of all the fruitless searches
in your eyes
oh I see the light and the heat
in your eyes
I want to be that in your eyes
I want to touch the light the heat
I see in your eyes"

...cause its a bitter sweet symphony this life
trying to make ends meet, your a slave to money then you die.
"Bitter Sweet Symphony" the Verve

...sometimes at night I can hear the ice crack
it sounds like thunder and it rips through my back
sometimes in the morning I still hear the sound
ice meets metal, can't you drive me down to the Big League...
"the Big League" Tom cochran.

...But there's a full moon risin'
Let's go dancing in the light
We know where the music's playin'
Let's go out and feel the night

Because I'm still in love with you
I want to see you dance again
Because I'm still in love with you
On this harvest moon...
"Harvest Moon" Neil Young

.. I sat there alone upon the ferris wheel
a pastel colored carriage in the air.
I thought you'd leave me danglin' for a little while
a silly twist upon a childish dare.
Below I saw you whispering to another man
who held the lever that could bring me down
He'd stop the world from turning at your command
It's always something cruel that laughter drowns
And I'm up while the dawn is breaking
even though my heart is aching
I should be drinking a toast
to absent friends
instead of these
comedians
I can hardly hear the music from the carousel
the wind picks up, the carriage starts to sway
As one by one the lights go out
it's closing time.
I see you take his hand and walk away
walk away
They say that you will always be the last to know
they say that all that glitters is not gold
its's not just that you're never coming back to me
It's the bitter way that I was told
And I'm up while the dawn is breakin'
even though my heart is achin'
I should be drinkin' a toast
to absent friends
instead of these
comedians.
"The Comedians" Roy Orbison

...September Seventeen
For a girl I know, it's Mother's Day
Her son has gone alee
And that's where he will stay
Wind on the weathervane
Tearing blue eyes sailor-mean
As Falstaff sings a sorrowful refrain
For a boy in Fiddler's Green

His tiny knotted heart
Well I guess it never worked too good
The timber tore apart
And the water gorged the wood
You can hear her whispered prayer
Formen at masts that always lean
That the same wind that moves her hair
Moves her boy through Fiddler's green

He doesn't know a soul
And there's nowhere that he's really been
But he won't travel long alone
No, not in Fiddler's Green
Balloons all filled with rain
As children's eye turn sleepy-mean
And Falstaff sings a sorrowful refrain
For a boy in fiddler's green
"Fiddler's Green" The Tragically Hip.

I guess there are just so many lyric's that have had and impact on me... these are just a few.

Ohhhh...where to begin???  Wow...well, ANYTHING Train, I could say right off the bat...
Lifehouse's lyrics rock, too..."cuz I am hanging on every word you say, and even if you don't want to speak tonight, that's alright with me...cuz I want nothing more than to sit outside heaven's door and listen to you breathing..."
ALL Jamie O'Neal..."everytime I close my eyes, I see your face, I taste you on my lips...every night I fantasize that I can feel you on my fingertips..."
Dido - "I won't go, I won't sleep, I can't breathe until you're resting here with me..."

Well, I'll definitely be back to this one, cuz I know I'll think of more!  Great thread, JM...

I’d tell it to your face,

Great Question JM!  Hm, I have a ton, let me see....

Tracy Chapman "Heaven's Here On Earth"

"We are the spirit
The collective conscience
We create the pain and the suffering
And the beauty in this world,
Heaven's here on Earth..
In our faith in human kind
In our respect for what is earthly
In our unfaltering belief
In peace and love and understanding"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tracy Chapman "Unsung Psalm"
"Do you live by the books,
Do you play by the rules?
Do you care what is thought by others about you?
If this day is all that is promised to you
Do you live for the future, the present, the past?"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Patty Larkin "Red Accordian"

"Don't stand in my way
Well I'm taking these legs for a spin 'round
The block
Gonna look up all those friends I forgot
Cuz I know there's a laugh in my throat that
got caught"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Patty Larkin "River"
"River let her dog run free
From the bay to where the island used to be
That dog was the only thing she called baby
Down a dirt road
She would follow
In a half remembered dream
Saying this was the one thing that can save me
They ran inbetween
Shadows of green
On gossamer wings
While the sun set bravely"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Alanis Morissette "Joining You"

"If we were our bodies
If we were our futures
If we were our defenses I'd be joining you"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Natalie Merchant "My Skin"
"Take a look at my body, a look at my hands
There's so much here that I don't understand
Your face saving promises whispered like prayers
I don't need them...
...I need the darkness, the sweetness, the sadness, the weakness,
Oh, I need this
I need a lullaby, a kiss goodnight, angel sweet love of my life.."
There's many more of course, but those are a few that I truly love.
*Krista Knutson*
Drops of Jupiter
Train
Now that she's back in the atmosphere
With drops of Jupiter in her hair, hey, hey
She acts like summer and walks like rain
Reminds me that there's time to change, hey, hey
Since the return from her stay on the moon
She listens like spring and she talks like June, hey, hey
Tell me did you sail across the sun
Did you make it to the Milky Way to see the lights all faded
And that heaven is overrated
Tell me, did you fall for a shooting star
One without a permanent scar
And did you miss me while you were looking at yourself out there
Now that she's back from that soul vacation
Tracing her way through the constellation, hey, hey
She checks out Mozart while she does tae-bo
Reminds me that there's time to grow, hey, hey
Now that she's back in the atmosphere
I'm afraid that she might think of me as plain ol' Jane
Told a story about a man who is too afraid to fly so he never did land
Tell me did the wind sweep you off your feet
Did you finally get the chance to dance along the light of day
And head back to the Milky Way
And tell me, did Venus blow your mind
Was it everything you wanted to find
And did you miss me while you were looking for yourself out there
Can you imagine no love, pride, deep-fried chicken
Your best friend always sticking up for you even when I know you're wrong
Can you imagine no first dance, freeze dried romance five-hour phone conversation
The best soy latte that you ever had . . . and me
Tell me did the wind sweep you off your feet
Did you finally get the chance to dance along the light of day
And head back toward the Milky Way
OH how did I forget Alanis Morrisettes "You Oughta Know"
Favorite verse of the song, "Does she know how you told me you'd hold me until you died, 'til you died..But you're still alive"
Garbage "I'm Only Happy When it Rains" An anthem for depressed women everywhere
Deanna Carter's Strawberry Wine
"I still remember when 30 was old,
and my biggest fear was September when he had to go,
a few cards and letters and one long distance call,
we drifted away like leaves in the fall, But year after year I come back to this place,
Just to remember the taste,
of strawberry wine and seventeen
The hot July moon saw everything
My first taste of love, so bittersweet
green on the vine-like strawberry wine"
I guess that one really needs the tune to make it sound so sweet and nostalgic, but it really takes you to another time
Several songs from Hole- Live Through This have some amazing lyrics. Personal favorite Doll Parts
"I want to be the girl with the most cake
I love him so much it just turns to hate
I fake it so real I am beyond faith
Someday, you will ache like I ache
So many great songs, with incredible lyrics. Impossible to think of them all. I agree with all the ones I know from everyone else, also.
There is a new one by Eve6, don't know the name,  "Here's to the nights we felt alive"
that one sentence stabs me every time.
Smoke Gets In Your Eyes.......Otto Harbauch and Jerome Kern
They asked me how I knew
My true love was true.
I of course replied
Something here inside
Cannot be denied.
They said someday you'll find
All who love are blind.
But when your heart's on fire
you must realize
Smoke gets in your eyes.
So I chair them
and I gaily laugh
to think they could doubt
my love.
Yet today
my love has flown away
I am without
my love.
Now laughing friends deride
tears I cannot hide.
So I smile and say
when a loving flame dies
smoke gets in your eyes.
This song I heard as a child and realized at that time that there was more to song lyrics than I love her and she loves me and happily ever after......so I went on to write many many sets of lyrics trying to capture the pure genius and simplicity of these words!
Thought I'd drop off a blues song of my own....just straight guitar blues.....written from a pure pain in the heart!
                                   Blue Notes and Chords
                                   with this old guitar in my hands
                                   and insanity in my heart
                                   I'm playin blue notes and chords sittin in the dark
                                   baby you were lyin and I feel like a fool
                                   and I got a heavy fever left over from you.
                                   I put my trust in your promises
                                   and you were hopin I would too
                                   cause you knew I'd be waitin for them to come true
                                   then along came old Santa sweet daddy claus
                                   he gave you everything a woman could want
                                   Chorus:
                                   baby this old guitar
                                   don't settle no scores
                                   but someday woman
                                   he ain't gonna want you no more
                                   and you're gonna cry girl
                                   when he shuts up the door
                                   and I'll be here healin
                                   with these blue notes and chords
                                   Now these misty eyes sre starin
                                   at four walls and the door
                                   and on this old guitar I'm playin blue notes and chords
                                   and I  see you out drivin your brand new car
                                   while I sit here on the floor with scars on my heart
                                   Bridge:
                                   so when you see me baby don't ask me how I've been
                                   cause you know I been alone while you been with him
                                   and girl don't say someday maybe we'll talk
                                   cause you ain't no friend... the only friend I got
                                   is this old guitar and these blue notes and chords
                                   and for better or worse I won't need nothin more
                                   with this old guitar in my hands
                                   I'm gonna play right through the pain
                                   right through the darkness, right through the rain
                                   til I can face the days with my spirit restored
                                   with this old guitar and these blue notes and chords.
Great thread Janet! Could be bigger than Ben Hur though.  Just a couple to start off with, sorry, Couldn't pick a favorite verse though!
Darling Be Home Soon
(John Sebastian)
Come and talk of all the things we did today
Hear and laugh about our funny little ways
While we have a few minutes to breathe
And I know that it's time you must leave
So darlin' be home soon (Darlin' be home soon)
I couldn't bear to wait an extra minute if you dawdled
My darlin' be home soon (Darlin' be home soon)
It's not just these few hours but I've been waitin' since I toddled
For the great relief of havin' you to talk to
And now a quarter of my life is almost passed
I think I've come to see myself at last
And I see the time I spent confused
Was the time I spent without you
And I feel myself in bloom
But go and beat your crazy head against the sky
Try and see beyond the houses in your eyes
It's okay to shoot the moon
For the great relief of havin' you to talk to
IRIS
(The Goo Goo Dolls)
And I'd give up forever to touch you
'Cause I know that you feel me somehow
You're the closest to heaven that I'll ever be
And I don't want to go home right now
And all I can taste is this moment
And all I can breathe is your life
'Cause sooner or later it's over
I just don't want to miss you tonight
And I don't want the world to see me
'Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am
And you can't fight the tears that ain't coming
Or the moment of truth in your lies
When everything feels like the movies
Yeah you bleed just to know you're alive
And I don't want the world to see me
'Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am
(break and solo)
And I don't want the world to see me
'Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am
And I don't want the world to see me
'Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am
I just want you to know who I am
I just want you to know who I am
I just want you to know who I am
O.K....many a year back I spent countless nights drinking and listening to Joe Cocker singing this one.  Great lyrics that can still make me cry.
"The Moon's a Harsh Mistress" by Jimmy Webb
See her as she flies, golden sails across the sky.
Close enough to touch, but careful if you try.
Though she looks as warm as gold,
the moon's a harsh mistress.
The moon can be so cold.
Once the sun did shine, and, Lord, it felt so fine.
The moon, a phantom rose
through the darkness and the pine,
and then the darkness fell.
The moon's a harsh mistress, it's hard to love her well.
I fell out of her eyes. I fell out of her heart.
I fell down on my face. Yes, I did,
and I tripped and I missed my star,
and I fell and fell alone.
The moon's a harsh mistress.
The sky is made of stone.
The moon's a harsh mistress.
She's hard to call your own.
They said someday you'll find- all who love are blind. Oh, when your heart is on fire- you must realize smoke gets in your eyes. The Platters," Smoke Gets in Your Eyes"
You wouldn't worry about what people thought about you if you knew how seldom they did.
Dee..that song is by the Judds
Love can Build A bridge - Judds
I'd gladly walk across the desert
with no shoes upon my feet
To share with you the last bite
of bread I had to eat
I would swim out to save you
In your sea of broken dreams
When all your hopes are sinking
Let me show you what love means
(chorus)Love can build a Bridge
Between your heart and mine
Love can build a bridge
Don't you think it's time
Don't you think it's time
I would whisper love so loudly
Every heart would understand
That love and only love
Can join the tribes of man
I would give my heart's desires
So that you might see
The first step is to realize
That it all begins with you and me
When we stand together
It's our finest hour
We can do Anything, Anything
If we keep believing in the power
Love can build a bridge
Between your heart and mine
Love can build a bridge
Don't you think it's time
Don't you think it's time
