I have been doing research on names and their meanings for use in a writing project that I am currently working on.  I was amazed at the beauty and diversity of the names that can be found in books and on the web ... and sometimes their meanings are pretty neat, too.

Some of the more beautiful/unusual monnikers I've run across:

Male:

Aidan(Celtic) : fire
Brandeis(German) : dweller on a burned clearing
Caedmon(Celtic) : wise warrior
Deverell(Welsh) : from the riverbank
Eadan(Celtic) : zealous, fiery
Faxon(German) : long hair
Glynis(Celtic) : a narrow valley
Hauk(Scandinavian) : hawk
Ivo(German) : archer
Jaeger(German) : hunter
Keir(Celtic) : dark
Laird(Scottish) : wealthy landowner
Murdoch(Scottish) : sea protector
Nils(Scandinavian) : champion
Odolf(German) : prosperous wolf
Rhys(Welsh) : rash, ardent
Skule(Scandinavian) : hidden
Tavish(Scottish) : a twin
Valborg(Scandinavian) : mighty mountain
Wynn(Welsh) : light complexion

Female:

Aisling(Irish) : inspiration, dream
Birkita(Celtic) : strength
Catriona(Celtic) : pure
Dilys(Welsh) : genuine
Eira(Welsh) : snow
Fionulla(Celtic) : fine
Galena(Celtic) : calm
Haldis(German) : stone spirit
Kyna(Celtic) : wise
Laila(Scandinavian) : night
Magan(German) : power
Nixie(German) : water sprite
Orla(Celtic) : golden woman
Rane(Scandinavian) : clean, pure
Saffi(Scandinavian) : wisdom
Thora(Scandinavian) : thunder
Ula(Celtic) : sea jewel
Vanora(Scottish) : a white wave

As you can see, I have thus far limited my search to only a few backgrounds due to the sheer number of names I must peruse ... so I need YOUR help!  What is your favorite unusual name ... and, if you know it, what is its national origin and meaning?

Help me out here folks!

Linda

Well, I don't know if this is considered beautiful...I'm sure some over-anesthestized mother did, but while working for the state and filing the myriad backlogs of files I came across this beauty:  Luscious Pea---I kid you not--and then there was THIS classic that I also filed away with giggles, altho I will only divulge the first name--URETHRA--

ROFL...

Linda, for years I've been trying to figure out what my name could possibly mean....

you have my blessings if you can figure out what my made-up name means [yup, I gave my Mom heartburn so she got even with me for the rest of my life...]

if you can figure out what Karilea is supposed to symbolize, big hugs are waiting!

right now...."state of confusion" comes to mind....

That would be my SCA name: Eoin Algernon de Braose.

Eoin: Norman French for John (c. 1200)
Algernon: Norman French for whiskered, but sometimes used to tease a smooth faced man. (c. 1200)
Braose: river in Normandy, also known as Bruce. (reputably where Robert the Bruce's family originated from)

Then there's my mundane favorite: Alastair, one of my middle names, and Scottish for Alexander, defender of men.

My name ( And every other girl's name from here to mars) is Jessica- which means wealthy. *I* think it should mean perfection.   Kidding.

But a name I find to be interesting and different is the name Zoe (Meaning life.) I love it. It's absolutey unique and full of energy.

I have a cousin whos name is Jacqueline. I always thought that was an interesting name too... I was always jealous of it. haha. Jacqueline means "To protect."

Sunshine:

I've been looking for your name and thus far have come up nil as far as the name in its entirety, but here are a few possible building blocks:

Karis (Greek) : grace
Karida (Arabic) : untouched, virginal
Kamilia (Slavic) : sweet flower
Sakari (American Indian) : sweet
(OK, so the last one is a bit off, but I thought it was cool ...)

+

Leah (Hebrew) : weary
Maleah (Unknown) : beautiful young woman/unique little girl
Elia (Hebrew) : Jehovah is God
Lia (Hebrew) : dependence

A web search on your name reveals that you share your name with 1)a purebred German Shepherd:
http://www.angelfire.com/wi/gsdpedigrees/blacklistml.html

2) A PTA member in Benton County, Arkansas:
http://www.bentonville.k12.ar.us/OHMS/OHMS%20Newsletter/JANNEWSLETTER.htm

3) A former ninth-grade (now sophomore) honor student in Lansing, New York:
http://people2.clarityconnect.com/webpages6/lansingnews/G-honors.html

4) ... and you, or someone very much like you, heads the Salina Legal Professionals organization :
http://www.klpi.org/Salina/index.html

... other than that, I've got bupkus.  I'll keep looking though!

Looks like we may have marked some of the same web pages for names there... LOL I LOVE Aidan. It struck me the first time I saw it and I've already began working HER into a story. LOL

Other names that have caught my fancy, sans definition, though most are of Irish decent:

  • Arianna

  • Nadiine (note the two "I's")

  • Aileen

  • Briana

  • Cáitlín

  • Kaleigh

  • Rhiannon (loved it since the first time I heard the song)

  • Siobhán (pronounced either shi-VAWN or shi-Oh-VAWN depending on who you talk to)

  • Taryn

  • Cashel

  • Lachtna

  • Lorcan

How about my name? Traditional West Indian name and if you don't know anything about the West Indies other than Jamica then don't hesistate to ask me more about it.

Vynette was the name of a popular dancer from Trinidad that hit it big in NY. There are several variations to that name, but there is noone with the same spelling as me, atleast to my knowledge.

Maiyia-Hindi-divine creative force in everything
This name they say was also the name of a famous prime minster of education in the West Indies, but I'm not sure how that could be true.  No more information was found on that.

Anastasia-Greek-Resurrection
This name has been passed down from my mother's side of the family for the last 10 years. It is always the second middle name.
It's seems rather funny especially when you are talking to ppl who believe in past lives.

Some of my other favorites are:
Meda-American Indian-priestess
Morna-Celtic-Affection, Beloved
Addison-English-Son of Adam (reminds me of how made me remember his last name)
Wyatt-French-Water

Oh and just for Alicat.
Alexander-Greek-helper and defender of mankind (this is my all time favorite name that has followed me around forever and this was the name that I was going to give my son originally)
Rhiannon- to my knowledge is the name of a Goddess.
I hope that you could find more information on my first name.  It is rather important to me.
Woooo..  I better step back and give others a chance now too. I hope that this helped you some.

Live in my world just once and you'll find yourself enraptured.

Oh Oh, I am agreeing with Christopher here..
I have always loved the name Taryn, have only known one person with the name. And Rhiannon, one of my other faves.

Thalia another Greek name, and of course Alexandra/Alexander/(my name is a derivative) Helper of mankind..how can you go wrong with that one...
