I found that many other poets hate free verse writers.. I know that it is hard to read at times, but it is not easy to write either.. I have times where I get writers block like the rest of the world.. It makes sense to me and if I put my mind to it I'm sure that I could write in another style, but this is how I like it.. They taught several differrent styles in school and I couldn't find one that fit me right.. Free verse is my form of release.. Please someone tell me where the hatred of such writings came from..

Love,
Lady

If it's any consolation, Ladycat, I know a lot of poets that hate the structure of rhyme and meter. Pick up just about any quality Poetry magazine these days - free verse (and blank verse, which isn't quite the same) outnumbers the more structured variety by a wide margin. That's when you can find any structured poems at all!

Many of the "old timers" around here have seen me write both. I can tell you from my own personal experience that free verse is the hardest of them all. If the message in a structured poem doesn't work, at least you can carry the ball with some clever rhymes and nice tonal sounds. When the message in a free verse poem doesn't work, you got squat!

So cheer up! You're actually in the majority!

I'll second that ....... Yeah - What Ron said...
I like free verse, Ladycat - especially when it's written by one of my favorite poets.... and I do like yours....

So, let's see some more of your work?
(I should talk, eh?)

Some do not like a poem that rhymes--
no matter what the words --
This seems quite craxy, ignorant
and very much absurd --

And then there's those who dislike poems
which show a heart and soul-
Despite the lack of metered rhyme-
They claim there's much untold.

But as for me, I like a poem
that has some substance but....
If it rhymes, I think that's fine,
and if it don't, so what?

Write from your heart
like blood dripping deep
from the core
of your soul
and the hole that is empty
will fill up with gold
and your mind will expand
to horizons not yet noticed --
beyond graveyards,
deep-seated passions,
pain, love, glee --
and the wedding of your eyes
to the mountains of truth inside
will meld
and see the rhapsody
instantly signified.
Write as if
your memory's denied.
Write as if the you inside
is ready to be born.

Write as if
it is the dawn --

the morn --

and then begone
with critic scorn.

Be free and
let your worry cease.
And with your pen
make peace.

While I prefer the challenge of structured poetry I also write some free verse. I love well written free verse but seldom am I satisfied with my own efforts along that line. Maybe you could give me some pointers?

I love free verse, and I write it too. if poets choose to hate free verse - it's their loss! Narrow minded comes to mind. Keep writing what you feel and want.

I like free verse IF it is really poetic - I've read some free verse that is no more than sentences conveniently divided up, without similes more complicated than "I feel really rotten." I've yet to explore the free verse style myself, but that's not saying much - I still owe two previous homework assignments to Nan (villanelle and paradelle). Ooops, I forgot about the Song challenge, too. Thanks to you, Cat, I now owe four assignments! I'll never catch up!

I've got a feeling that a free verse poem is not going to be any easier than that rascally paradelle style. Why oh why do I aspire to be better? After all, only the mediocre are always at their best.

I'm not sure Ladycat, but I think the use of the word 'hate' was a bit to strong. I know many here do not prefer free verse to rhyme, but I don't know of many, or any, that hate it.

Besides, just between me and you... those who don't care for free verse are usually the ones who can't write it. (don't tell anyone I said that, okay?)

Yep, there's a challenge alright. You want to tell the public what I've given you or should I wait the three weeks for you to answer the challenge?
