I have an idea…not really a suggestion so I’m posting it here. Tell me what you think:

Let’s pool together and buy a town. See this link (it may be sold already but you get the idea of what I’m going for!):
http://www.rereader.com/bearvly.html

The plan:
Buy a small town and turn it into our own Passionate Place. (I’m leaning towards Northern California right now as the place to be, though I’m open to other parts of the country that don’t have a lot of snow!)

We could move there, make it a working ‘poetry/writing’ community.

We would hold clinics for writers; seminars; classes; workshops; summer camp for kids (of all ages).

People would pay us to come out and enjoy reading/writing and living poetry and prose.

Have plays and poetry readings and  festivals all summer!

We could have a ‘passionate press’ and print works by unknown and emerging authors.

Some will want to maintain a ‘normal’ life and keep a job in a nearby city. That’s fine – but there would be a special city tax to cover the cost of some of the ‘functions’ at first. We won’t be making money at first so we would need a way to supplement our income.  Eventually we could make a profit from the fees for the camps/seminars/classes/workshops/plays/festivals ( we could even make our own T-shirts to sell!)

You could have a space there for your trailer or cabin. Spend your weekends with the ‘townies’.

We could live in peace and harmony. Grow our own veggies and chickens and cows… we could have a town council…we could LIVE our work….

Ok…tell me why it won’t work (I still think it can!)

Sharon's startin' a commune! I love it ... save me a tent ... or a trailer ... or something! And I'm not laughing Sharon, hey, if I could be a part of something like that ... I'd be in heaven, not sure about the hubby though!

Just FYI ... I tried the link, and I got "connection refused" ???  Does that mean I've been banned from the community already, LOL???

Ron, there is NO way I would allow you to do the gardening or livestock maintenance. You, sir, would be in the main building....keeping the forum on track....updating the main site...after all if we don't have our 'home on the net' how will we get our citizens?

Thank you all for your comments..

I am not a hippy.
Poertree - whatever do you mean? I think we can live in peace and harmony! Maybe you would like to volunteer to be the Sheriff to make sure we do!?
I can milk a cow (pull and squeeze! LOL)

*sigh. I guess I'll have to start it myself. Ok, so if I do, I get to name it deVineVille or PdVtown...(Sharonville is taken I think). Maybe I'll just call it Love and Harmony, USA!

Hey I know this band that covers all the Dead tunes and we could bring em.. and.. lol @ KIT -- I was thinking commune too....

but seriously -- if you go into central Florida around the Ocala National Forrest property is pretty reasonable... and it's fairly close to Orlando -- which is now the second most visited city in the country behind New York -- so -- if you wanted to hit the tourist / retreat trade -- I'd start around there -- and you wouldn't have to Buy a town -- just some land -- and Build it from scratch.... yanno?  been done before...

of course -- being the passionate poet people we are -- I'm betting there'd be a need for some big referees and some time-out corners somewhere...

or maybe just an Alley???

nice thought Sharon

Modesto (we'll have some lovely modest neighbours)
San Francisco (isn't there famous prison nearby ... could keep that handy if "anyone" get's out of line)
Ragby (well, I prefer Rugby, but I'm up for new sports)
Hornitos (If the "T" fell off we could be in for bad weather, but if the "D" fell off, we've got great munchies nearby)
Dogtown (oh, what can I say .. I'd be in heaven living near there)
Ben Hur (chariot races for the holidays)

I'm in!!!

I'm still serious Sharon ... I love the idea, just having fun. You're wonderful, ya know that???

***I'm editing this, cause I just got the link to work, first time for me ... this IS really neat Sharon!!!

Hey Sharon, the town you are referring to is a lovely little place, an old 'gold mining' hamlet, peaceful and absolutely suited to bring out the muse...

Not too far from where I live BTW...

Count me in.  Can I have a little tie die shop, I could silkscreen poetic verse onto some groovy shirts...

First of all, don't forget the pigs cause i do like pork chops, pork tenderloins, and most specially BACON!!!   You never go wrong with bacon and eggs for breakfast.  Another thing too, don't forget ponds for raising fish.  Some of us might wanna diet every once in a while, and it's good for lent

I do also have an idea for the name of the town...what do you think about "Passions"
And can we move it over to Illinois area.  A little snow in the winter wouldn't hurt.  That'll give us greater ideas for discriptive poems too.

Count me in

Ok - Yeah. Illinios is a great idea. Then, not only do we get freezing cold weather in the winter, those of us that survive it (myself not likely to be one of these) can melt in the appalingly humid/hot summers!

NO WAY!!!

Sharon - Not sheriff! I wanna be da Mayor! (that way I can order Sheriff Thigh-bone there around!) After all, what's he gonna do with a water gun? I figure if I pick on him in the winter, I won't even get wet!

I lived in Great Lakes (about 40 miles north of Chicago) for a bit over two years. I lived right on Lake Michigan (Yes, that lake so full of sewage that you're afraid if you swim in it, your skin will begin falling off your body.) The first winter I was there, temperatures got as low as 52 degrees BELOW zero.   Yes, yes, yes, it was due to a wind chill factor - WHO CARES?!!! That's still @%$#%$@ COLD!!! Then the summers - Hey, I LOVE the heat... just not when it feels like you're taking a shower outside!!!

Hmmmmmmm...

I MIGHT just be able to make it you know...I am after all ONLY 6000 miles away - but that could be remedied, that could be remedied...

Ok, let's say for now it is and I am stuck in the snowy part of California (which strikes me as highly oxymoronic anyway).

I have the hippy hair already (and hippy sunglasses too..I'm on a roll!)

Sweetcharity reporting for duty (blech...)

If we are indeed keeping cows and whatnot - any volunteers for the 4am milking? Nan's out - I could be persuaded - depends on the incentives. (I know a nice way to keep my feet warm in winter...doesn't SMELL particularly good tho...hmm yes).

Poertree oops I mean Philip of course - if you get to be the sheriff I get to - in all my Sweetcharityness - (after I come in from milking that is) wake everyone up at 6am for the daily Poetic Inspiration March, followed by synchronised swimming lessons at 7am.

This will be enforced - won't have any slackers here!!!!! You have to work to reap the benefits! Old school, old school!

(Hey - I will be providing milk...be nice...)

(Sheriff Tree, I swear on the graves of my ancestors to faithfully hold Mayor (snicker) C down while you squirt him - this can also become a happy daily ritual...)

I saw this thread early this morning, then had to go to work. Got back this evening and was amazed. Sharon, I don't know where you get these ideas from, but they are absolutely fantabulous!!!

I really like the idea of buying a town and moving. Kinda been having those thoughts for several years, only mine have been about buying property and building up from there. Why do you think I've been traveling around so much?   Gotta find a place that fits the scene in my head, and I know it exists. Gotta get all that squared away before the global economy collapses in about 6 more years....

BTW, being the jack-of-all-trades that I am, I know carpentry, plumbing, auto repair, electrical motor repair, cooking, gardening, snaring and cleaning mammals, avians, and fish for eating, basic medicine (setting bones and whatnot), firearm servicing, sewing, architectural drafting, electrical wiring, menu planning, and ditch-digging, as well as vacuum cleaner repair. Only snag is that I don't have a tiny piece of paper saying I know how to do any of these things...is called by various names: diploma, certificate, degree.

Geez, that's a lotta knowledge! That's me though, if I don't know it, I'll learn it soon, the hubby isn't a handy man when it comes to that. So I'll fix your doors if the hinges fall off...hook up a stereo, vcr, and computer, printer, and scanner. Can't do plumbing yet, but I'm sure I'll learn it, I have to. So you can teach me and I'll help ya!

I can set up the registers if you have any Sharon, and keep them running. I love wood working! Did that way back in Jr high!

Well Joyous Breeze, I think I'll be Nature's Child ... nice to formally meet ya!

I'll volunteer to help look after all the feathered and furry animals ... just may be tough to get a steak or a roast chicken in town then, cause I'd probably turn them all into pets, LOL!

So Christopher ... I'm placing my order now ... "I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!"

Yes there are bears,
and bugs,
and alligators,
summer heat
to boil radiators

but there's beaches
sun and tans
bikinis and even
sometimes
sans

sand and palm trees
forrest fires

and it's true
you will perspire

but don't let those palmetto bugs
get you down
just grab a saddle
and ride them to town...

hey -- I got an idea -- we could start an internet game show called poet survior... right out in the middle of the forrest...???

fat naked poets???  rofl

A marvelous idea! You can count me in, as long as I don't have to do the morning milking.   Has anyone considered Australia, there is plenty of room here!

Well, I don't much about plumbing and such. I am pretty handy with a soldering iron though and can fix motherboards and such. I can also help pretty the place up with needlepoint and embroidery (by hand no less) lol. Wind Willow...oh yeah I can do macrame too. Tables, plant hangers etc.

Well, personally, I don't know what all the fuss is about ...

Michael and I already BOUGHT Bear Valley -- with the oodles and oodles of cash we made from both our shamelessly successful writing careers ...(HA!)

(Actually we just stopped in there recently and had a soda -- but it's kinda the same thing, right...?)

Just a little note -- if you're wanting to buy the place, you might want to give some thought to how you're going to be rid of all the "snooty" people that live there, not to mention the "demonic" Homeowner's Association -- I read an article in their local paper about a lady who was fined some exorbitant amount for hanging her delicate washables out to dry ... grrrr

So Bear Valley's great, I guess, as long as you don't have your drawers flapping in the breeze!

Okay, here's the deal... it doesn't snow too much there so everyone will be okay, and I decided on my hippie name

Buck Nekid...

all y'all can run around like crazy folks all day, I will have a nice large covered porch in front of my tie die shop with chairs and such, so Nan and everyone who wants to can come, sit a spell, write undisturbed or enjoy casual conversation (maybe Angel X will do the coffee...)

P.S.  Christopher, you should come by my place sometime and visit.  Just go up 99 and take a right at 80 and you are there...

Well, I love the whole idea, but I have one suggestion, we need an "Aunt Bea" you know someone to show up with a basket full of goodies and homemade canned pickles and just make us feel good!!
And a good jail for all the bad poets, a diner where we can gather to write our poetic genius on napkins and sip soda, and oh, yes, no speeding in this town, everyone plays by the rules and never says anything rude, a hayride in October, and of course the big dance!

Poetry readings would be nice, in the middle of the square, and man, I'm packing my bags!

Okay, okay... I can see you need an authentic farm gal... I know how to milk, slop hogs, feed chickens and all those other chores (even butchering... though that gets a hefty "blechk!" and should be used as punishment... a much more effective deterrent than squirt guns! LOL) I'm a darn good gardener and cook, too! But making me participate in synchronized swimming is asking for a tidal wave... I humbly beg to be excused! *G*

Maybe we could name it the "Tennys Inn"
