at the advent of Valentine's Day, I'd like to know what others think a really sweet gift or gesture for a girl/guy(i think i should put this in here too) is this Valentine's Day.

my gift no nos:
Flowers are over used.  Candies are too.  Don't even mention teddy bears, specially Valentino the Valentine beannie baby.

my gesture no nos:
Dinner is almost a must.  Candle light is not original anymore, even if you get someone to play a violin.  Movies are out of the question cause the only good one out right now is that "Searching forrester"(i think thats the title) which is not a romantic movie.

So, any ideas folks?

I'd have to say anything that took thought; careful consideration as to what the other person would like.

All I can think of is an example of sorts:  A close friend of mine had a similar conversation a long time ago - and I made the statement (paraphrasing) "I would be happy with a rock.  If someone saw a rock and thought of me (crazy, I know), and gave me that rock..that would make me happy."  So, about two years later - I got a rock.  I loved it!

Remember - I've never claimed sanity

Probably my most successful and fun "gesture" was a picnic on wheels.

It wasn't particularly fancy, but I made everything myself. Lots of different cheeses and breads, tiny little sandwiches with the crust cut off, fresh fruit salad marinated in rum, that sort of thing. And plenty of Champaign. I bought a wicker basket only slightly smaller than Rhode Island and almost couldn't fit everything into it. Colorful cotton tablecloth and napkins. Fancy glasses. And, of course, the single obligatory red rose.

The "wheels" part of the picnic was the stretch limo and driver I hired to drive us around for four hours, while we ate, drank, and laughed. I can sincerely say it was one of the most memorable evenings of my life.

I think the sweetest gift/gesture is time. It's something we all seem to be short of these days.

A perfect evening would be either cooking a meal together or ordering in; sitting on the couch together watching movies or reading or talking. I know it's not fancy, but we are such a 'fast' society - everything has to be instant - that some slow, quality time would be great.

And Nic, I collect rocks from around the world and I have received rocks as gifts!

Uhm, wreck your bike in the middle of traffic for him/her. I did that and didn't even buy them anything afterwards, but aforementioned party said it was the sweetest thing anyone had ever done for them. Of course, I didn't MEAN to slide across pavement but hey, proves you never know what works.

And I have a huge collection of rocks with little inked captions that tell either of the place I've picked them up from or the association that makes me keep it. Not to mention I'm living with one now

love you, rock. you enhance the whole of my life, even breathing.

and I'm having a great Valentine's Day this year! The boyfriend is going out without me...trust me, it's preferable.

Depending upon locale, of course (warmth is an important factor) - Taking that same picnic to a remote location in the sand dunes - under the stars (via 4-wheel) - perhaps near a lighthouse for ambience - overlooking some ocean or another...

this is what I've done before

my ex is very particular about things.  spcially her flowers, she counts em.  I knew that, so I had the florist send her 11 white roses on her birthday....Obviously, she'd been ticked all day after recieving it.  By the time I picked her up to go for dinner, she was telling me that the florist made a mistake and told me to contact them asap.  I told her the florist was closed at that time.  So, all night, I never heard the end of it.  When we got to our table in the restaurant, there on the table by her seat was the 12th rose which was red, and a note saying "I Love You"  I got a punch in the shoulder then a big hug.

I wanna do something original like that for this certain girl, but she's not my girlfriend yet(this word makes me sound arogant)....

So, any more suggestions

Once there was a little girl. She really liked a little boy. The boy had no idea that the girl liked him, so he was mean to her like the rest of the world. Then one fine day the little girl was leaving home early from school because she couldn't take the Valentine's Day horror any longer. The little boy just happened to be coming into the school, carrying a teddy bear and some roses for his so-called girlfriend. They boy entered the school without giving a thought to the girl that sat crying before his very eyes. He gave his gifts to his 'girlfriend' and she smiled her fake smile. Then he remembered the sad girl. He thought he might help her out a little, it being Valentine's Day and all. So he walked his perfect walk to where she sat, still soaked with tears. She looked up at him and started crying again. He looked back at her, now understanding why she cried, and what he must do.
So yeah...the best thing ya can give someone on Valentine's Day is a gentle smile and a good batch of understanding.

acire, I have to disagree on gift no nos. I got Justin a teddy bear, a carnation, and a card.  I can't help it.  It's pretty much all I can afford.

I wish people would stop telling me that I can do anything I want to. I never thought that I couldn't.
