I'm angry. Plain and simple. Why are people so predjudiced? Not just against race but age and sexuality and gender.

Lets talk about age!

Just because I'm 15 years old doesn't mean I don't have anything constructive to say or that my oppinions don't count. They should! Sometimes I am right and know that I'm right. But way too many times in my life I have been shot down and told I am wrong before I even get to express myself.

I'm just mad and needed to vent. I know not every adult sees teens as brainless curtains to be pushed aside, but there are those who do. I've encountered them in my life. More than once!

AHHHHH! Can I scream? AHHHHHH!

Sorry You should be heard.

If it's any consulation, sometimes they even think us adults are brainless curtains.

They don't necessarily have to agree, but they should be open enough to listen.

There are a lot of people who can look at you, but not SEE you. They see: age, sex, race, handicaps, hair color, religion..etc. Those are the people we need to feel sorry for...because they have lost something precious. The ability to be tolerant.

I agree..no one should 'put you down' because of your age. It's unfortunate that we are judged by someone's preconceived notions.

If we learn to see with our hearts and not our eyes, the world will be a better place. It's much better today, believe it or not, than it was when I was your age.

You just have to keep answering questions, remain calm, expect to be believed but when you aren't, accept that it's not YOU but THEM! And gradually, the world will be different...YOU can make a difference!!

What is it you want to say?

What are your opinions?

Let's here some. Doesn't mean I'll agree (I rarely do) but I'll listen.

go ahead vent your frustrations. I don't really blame you. Unfortunately, this is a very stereo-typing world.

Joy I've known you for quite a while, and AGE has never had anything to do with the respect and acceptance I feel for you.
Those people that refuse to look beyond things (many types of prejudices) are indeed the ones we should feel sorry for. They live in a perpetual little fantasy land. And within that fantasy land they experience the same over and over, who would want a life with no adversity, challenge or change.
Certainly not I! Poet Devine is right WE should feel sorry for them..
Hope you feel better after your vent?

There are also people who will judge you before they even begin to know you...a bit like saying you hate olives, but never have eaten one.hmm...trust me this happens often to me. The fact is people beleive what they WANT to beleive, and not knowing you does not stop them from beleiving they know it all!!!!! I'm dealing with this right now, could i please vent with you?? Someday we'll have the chance to prove ourselves,i'm certain.

*rolling eyes* Chris, that’s because you still like you’re five. Can YOU name all the planets and their characteristics?

Joy,
The best advice I can give to you about this situation is to NOT act aggressively. If your manner and speech is mature, the right people will listen. This has been my personal experience.
And from what I've read above, you seem to have a ton of support in THIS place, and your opinion will always be welcome.

*grins* But, yeah, it’s nice to vent sometimes too…

Thanks for the support and letting me vent! I feel much better.

I'm attending a Youth Leadership Program every Tuesday to learn about issues like prejudices and racism and leadership skills.

It'll be one more step for me to grow as a person.

I'm not saying everyone has to agree with me on anything. But just the chance to be heard is all I want.

One day my days in the sun will come and I will make a difference in the world. So I better not complain too much. But sometimes you need to ya know?

We all need to vent. I can really relate to how you feel, joy. I am also 15, and I face the stereotype of "stupid teenager" A LOT. My advice to you has already been mentioned, but I'll say it again: act mature. If you fuss around and act like a kid, you will be treated like one. If you act like the adult you are, however, it will be different in most cases. If this doesn't work, others that see your mature attitude towards the childish adult will only have more respect for you and other teens.

No matter where you go or what you become, there will always be people who think you can't do it because of your age, your accent, your background, or anything their small minds can think of. Prove them wrong.

Well hey......I'm 18 next month and.......I have managed to just box closed minded people out........BOX in BOX out BOX in BOX out.......Mr. Miagi taught me that one.

People are mean. Plain and simple. There has always been people like that. Throughout our history there has been treated like you have been treated. It stinks and I know it. The best thing you can do is block them out or.....you can just be nice, kindly smile and leave.

Joy:

I know exactly how you feel. I simply hate doing things like boring types of work, with other people. I simply cannot stand small talk. I especially can't stand it when somebody comes and decides to help me do the dishes. Then that person decides to play some of the most annoying music ever concocted by anything similar to a human being[for purposes of not being too insulting, I will not say what that particular music/musical group is]. So if their small talk isn't enough to break and destroy my thoughts, that annoying music must contribute as well.

It's that idea people have that because you're young you don't have a clue what you're doing, and so you need some dang fool to help you. The thing I especially hate about being on the male side[Oh believe me, BTW, teenage males get the same BS from adults, it's not just about gender] is the "scruffy working class life ethics" that people throw down your throat. This happens a lot where I live[it's redneck country, lol]. Whenever I hear it[stuff like the "if you have a job you'll have a life" stuff] it makes me wish I wasn't human. I mean, I'm not knocking work. In fact, I think work would be kinda fun, getting to meet all the people in the small town and getting to know them, and giving a thinking mind a break and all. But I am knocking the simple minded vibe that people seem to give off to me, that as a man I'm supposed to bend over, shut up, and devote my life to some silly company.

So that's a detailed description of how I've experienced this. Mind you, now that I'm nineteen, it's starting to wear off, but I still get accused of "reinventing the wheel" whenever I have a good idea.
