Hi fellow poets,

I am one of the owners of a web site found to have a plagarized poem on it. This one was a pretty obvious plagerism not just a simple sharing of someones poem. I will also add I have removed it. I feel bad that it happened, but better that it was caught.

I brought this same subject up with a newsgroup I belong to for their opinions and thoughts. There are a lot of fellow writers in this group. They are more geared toward short stories but their feelings have been very much the same.

It seems some Website owners are unfamiliar with the laws and rules regarding copyrights.

Your poems do belong to you whether a formal copyright with the Office of Copyrights is pending or not. Just putting your your words in print is enough for it to be copyrighted. But providing proof is where the copyright comes in.

An official Copyright is not really that expensive $30 and you can copyright all your poetry in one lump some as a "collection" or "works of" or individually whether published or not. It lasts your lifetime +70 more years. It is an easy to understand form that can be printed out on your computer. From their website:

http://lcweb.loc.gov/copyright/

My suggestion would be to take advantage of this for your own protection.

You have a great group of friends here and I have enjoyed reading all your posts and thoughts on this subject. I look forward to reading more in the future.

Your Friend in Poetry,
Dreamer

Thanks for understanding Dreamer, and for sharing additional information. This is very important.

Prior to posting any of my poetry on the internet, as a Canadian, I filed with the CIPO (Canadian Intellectual Property Office), and have a Copyright Certificate of Registration, which covers a compilation of my writings. The cost at the time was $65 Canadian. It simply gave me an added layer of protection and comfort prior to posting my work on the internet, in anticipation of what we are discovering.

For anyone requiring further information, this is the direct link to the CIPO for Canadians, where you can review the information, applications etc:

Thank you, Dreamer...

...For stepping forth and standing with us on this issue. Plagiarism is certainly the most aggrevious affront to a writer in any genre. Attitudes such as yours, in keeping with ours, make the internet a wonderful place to share our work with others.

You clearly maintain the same standards of integrity that we do at Passions. I'd love to visit your site, as you have graced ours. Welcome, and do feel free to offer some of your own work here... We'd love to read it...

Thanks again
Nancy

There were a LOT, Acire. If they're only in the forums they're pretty much safe...main sites, however, are a different story...

OK, now I'm very very very mad!

Ron, remember your beautiful Poem, Cyber Seas which you wrote for heather and I? Uhmmmm, I've just found it being passed off as her work by that goldene that Sans38 gave the link for. it's posted under "Internet Connection"

Sorry I can't put the link in, but I'm very tired, very stressed and (did I mention this already?) VERY mad indeed. I haven't looked through all the poems yet, but I will be soon!

and a little cheer-up message for Rebecca

Did you realise that "Michelle Curiel" is an anagram for "I, Michelle Cruel"?

Well Colin you sure did make me laugh. I guess if the 'name fits' wear it. LOL

And to everyone else about 5042. I asked that my email be forwarded to this person, and asked that they write. They did just that, and here's the email I got.

quote:

I would like to apologize for posting your poem without permission. I would also like
to apologize to the other authors, whose work I posted. You are all very talented.
I would never take credit for someone else's work. Besides that, anyone who knows me knows that I could never write anything even half as good as your work.
I'm going through some rough times in a relationship and all of the poems I posted
fit right in with most of the things going on in my life. They touched my heart.
For that I thank you.

Sincerely,  5042

I told him/her that were no hard feelings, and I'm sure the rest of us would feel the same as well. (hope you all don't mind I said that?)

I also offered to help him write poetry if he cares to do that.   I'm sure it would be good therapy for whatever troubles him.

Thanks, Sandra, it's great!! I love what you've done with it!! Just one question, how do I send it as an Ecard? I couldn't figure that out.

Check it out, everyone! Didn't she do a great job with the presentation?!

Did some searches on goldene's 'poetry'. Results thus far:
Ron Carnell's 'When I Think of You'
http://www.maxpages.com/fatehaze/poetry  untitled, false ownership, halfway down page
http://library.lovingyou.com/poetry/38/38640.shtml  renamed A Single Rose
http://millennium.fortunecity.com/aylesbury/141/poems.htm  Titled, linked back, but Ron, they done mispelled your name...twice.
http://homepages.nyu.edu/~jw488/assign6/poem1.html  untitled, unattributed, site owned by Jay Wong, of NYU.

Sheesh....I think I'm gonna stop there. I searched 8 poems, starting alphabetically on her poetry list. The first one got a slew of hits, 'A Friend', while 'Addicted to You', from one of our resident poets, was found also on 6 other locations. That was the last one I searched on....my brain is getting tired of this.....person (didn't wanna break the guidelines)

More later.

Thanks for the helping hand there Ali
When I get time, I'm gonna pursue that one of mine I found and check through the rest of Goldene's too.

Has anyone tried using search engines other than google and found results that didn't show up with google at all?

ok, off to the dentist I go

Heh..that got me too, Elizabeth.

Well guys, I downloaded Copernic 2000 from download.cnet.com and I've gotta say that I love this thingy. Sure, it's a little bulky and is a little bit slow, but I've found a few of mine I missed before. It searches AltaVista, AOL, Direct Hit, Euroseek, Excite, FAST, FindWhat, Go, Google, GoTo, HotBot, LookSmart, Lycos, MSN, NBCi, Netscape Netcenter, Open Directory Project, Webcrawler, and Yahoo!...and that's just for web searches. Exact phrase matching, and groups identical hits together, instead of listiing them separately. This should make this project just a tad easier....

Uh, PdV & Balladeer,

In reading this post I was not surprised to see EZBoards name pop up.  My question for either of you is, with whom were you able to contact at the EZBoards to get something done?

A user there, "Nox", has posted one of my poems under his name...  I have emailed the administrators, I have left my own personal message on the boards, and I have used their user complaint link to file a formal complaint.  I have heard zilch.

I noticed this user had actually won an award for his poem "Lover's Dance".  Was this a dupe of your poem, PdV?  Just curious if this guy has done this before.
