I tried to register at Arcanum Cafe and received this email reply:

I wouldn’t get too upset Sharon, I believe the site owner is flagging free email addresses as cases ‘in need of closer scrutiny’. Yahoo would be top of the list I suppose, the site at one time banned registrants from entering accounts of this type altogether in an attempt to stop the idiot fringe from gaining easy access.

It seems they have had their fair share and are looking at ways of minimising troublemakers.

It seems to have worked in your case!

I sent them an email and asked why...no reply yet. They don't have to have a reason. Good grief don't they want their membership to grow? How do they know who I am? I didn't use Poet deVine so my 'reputation' (honest I'm not a troublemaker) didn't precede me!! The user name I signed up with is a bit odd, but it's not THAT bad.......geesh!

Ok..I got a reply:

quote:
Sharon,

The denial at the time honestly was due to the username, combined with the fact of previous problems with a "troll" (old Usenet term for those with no intention other than to start trouble or flame wars) using a similar username about 2 months ago.

So it was by no means anything personal.  My apologies if it seemed like such or heavy handed.  And you are free to re-register at any time, though for the sake of things I wouldn't suggest using such a moniker for that purpose.

So. I guess if I change my name from what I used to something else, something innocuous, I can register......I'll think about it.

I registered today and was accepted, just used the name that I use here. So I figured it must have something to do with the username that you chose, Sharon. Try again. I'm sure there will be no problem. I read some really good poetry there tonight. I searched in vain for the copyright discussion that you mentioned. Where was that located?

A few years ago, I worked with another 'Sharon'. We were very much alike..too nice most of the time - couldn't say no to taking on more responsibility. She told me that she sometimes saw herself as 'Suzanne Sugarbaker' (from Designing Women the TV show). She said she'd like to be that 'bold' that 'tart tongued'. I told her I wished I could be that way sometimes too...though to be honest, I have a ribald wit that catches people off guard. I NEVER swear - don't have to..puns and double entrenes work for me!

One day 'the other Sharon' brought in a cartoon from the paper. It was 'Dilbert'. The story went like this -

'Tina' was talking on the phone about an email that she sent. It was supposed to be just for one 'special guy' but she inadvertantly sent it to the whole company. It was signed 'your luvmonkey'. Tina said she was sure her coworkers would treat this with maturity and not make a big deal out of it. The last frame showed her cowering under the desk as a coworker led a tour of new employees past her desk. As they walked by, he introduced her as 'Tina, the red-faced luvmonkey'.

That's what everyone started calling me...I was either Tina or 'the luvmonkey'!!! right down to my email address.......

there!

Ingrate huh? There's a new one. Haven't been called that one before. LOL

Suppose it would seem vindicative to mention that emails such as the ones Poet De Vine posted here can be considered copyrighted material in and of themself. Thus use here could be considered infringement in some courts. The irony, I know. No intent to start a war between thee two sites, just personally really enjoy irony.

And believe, between the last email and the preface Craig gave, the situation was otherwise explained. My apologies for showing up upon your door. But was out and about looking through stats and case of copyright infringement as of late. Figured since had an old account here I'd comment. But my previous account here seems to have been deleted. I'll presume that wasn't anything to do with this or any other capricious reason.

HAHAHA.. this is funny how these threads can go SO off the subject!

I never thought that you would ever be the one to let me down. I guess that just goes to show how wrong I always am.

Whoa! As some of you may or may not know, I am a moderator at Arcanum Cafe and I give you my word that no insult was intended. The reason the free e-mail addresses have been banned was because of former members already banned for excessive use of obscenities, flame wars, and committing personal attacks on other members were trying to sneak back in with new names and continue their behaviour. We had a great deal of trouble with this in the past and the site became quite chaotic until these steps were taken. That decision was not made lightly, but it has worked.

All poets are welcome there, and I personally invite you guys to come on over and join in.
